The BBC recently reported a rise in the use of British English in the US. Words like “cheers”, meaning “thank you”, and “mate”, meaning “friend”, are becoming popular. No one knows 44 this has happened, although the success of British films like Harry Potter may have something to do with it.
British English and American English are a little different. The two are the 45 in grammar but different in the way they pronounce and spell some words. 46 pronounce words like car, better and sweater with an /er/ at the 47 while British people say these words with an /e/. The British way of 48 “color” is “colour” and they write “favorite” as “favourite”.
English is the most 49 language in the world because of the British Empire(英帝国). Its colonies(殖民地) 50 covered 25 percent of the planet. In some parts of the US, people really like the British accent.
Actor Hugh Grant, with his accent, was very 51 in Hollywood. His accent is very popular, and Americans often think British accents 52 elegant(优雅的). Maybe this has something to do with the Queen.
Don’t 53 about the difference between British and American English. When you have exams, it is fine to use the English that you learned 54 your textbooks. The differences are not so important.

In China, a thumb up sign is used to praise someone for being “good” “great” and “smart”. In America, a thumb up sign means “It’s good” or “It’s OK” while a thumb down sign means the opposite (相反的) . But in some countries, a thumb up sign has other meanings. For example, in Japan, that also means “man” “your father” and “the highest”. Holding out your forefinger and middle finger and making the “v” word can mean “victory (胜利) ” in Britain, France and other countries.

Life is full of the unexpected. This is even true for a small pet dog. A dog called Romeo has been pulled out from the rubble (瓦砾) of an earthquake, more than nine days after the earthquake. On August 24, 2016, a terrible earthquake happened in Italy. The earthquake made thousands of people lose their houses. Romeo’s owners were sleeping on the second floor of their house when the earthquake happened. They managed to get out. But Romeo, who was sleeping on the first floor, was trapped inside. They tried their best to search for Romeo, but failed. After a few hours, they had to leave the village for their own safety.
All hope of finding Romeo alive seemed to disappear until Friday evening. That night the couple returned to their home with a group of firemen. Almost as soon as they came into the village, Romeo heard their voices and began barking (吠叫).
The couple couldn’t believe their ears. The firemen began digging at once where the barking was coming from and got to the dog. It was lucky that the dog was in pretty good condition. He looked like he had just woken from a short sleep.
Appearing completely relaxed, the dog drank his first drop of water in more than 230 hours from a bottle held by one of the firemen.
As it became clear he didn’t get hurt, the fireman put him down. When Romeo’s owners saw him, they couldn’t help crying. “We thought we had lost him forever!” said one of Romeo’s owners. Then Romeo left happily with his owners who had given up hope of finding him alive.

Let’s clean up the ocean together!
We all know it’s important to have dreams. However, to make the dreams come true is not an easy thing. A young Dutch (荷兰的) man named Boyan enjoys working hard to make his dreams come true.

However, everyone told him that there was nothing he could do. The teenager didn’t give up. He spent several months studying plastic pollution. Finally, he came up with a science project using floating barriers (漂浮的栅栏) to collect the waste. That is to say, instead of using nets and ships to collect the plastic bags, the barriers can make the plastic bags come together with the help of natural ocean currents (洋流) and winds. What’s more, the collected plastic bags can be recycled and made into products or oil.
Boyan won prizes for the project, but that was not enough for him: he wanted to make it a reality. Then he set up The Ocean Cleanup. Together with scientists, engineers and volunteers, the young man is working hard to clean up the ocean to make our world a better place.

Five tips on improving your memory
Most of us know that our brains become smaller in size as we get older, but do you know that diet and lifestyle have an effect on how well our brains work
Research shows that eating lots of fruit, vegetables and proteins (蛋白质) improves the memory. 73 Eating oily fish or dark chocolate (with over 70% cocoa) and taking Vitamin D3 can also help make our memory stronger.
74 A 2011 study showed that regular exercise actually increases brain size. Another study found that exercise improves the memory in some older people; surprisingly it found that one single training period has the same effect on the memory as a regular, long exercise period!
One study found that eight weeks of short, daily meditation (冥想) improves the memory. Other ways to relax can also improve our short-term memory. Try taking 5-10 minutes of your day to meditate or listen to music. 75
Experts say that age reduces our ability to learn, but sleep can help. 76 A 2019 study found that students learn things better before and after a short sleep!
77 Try to memorize information like phone numbers and addresses rather than putting the information in your phone. You could also learn a language or do brain training like crosswords (填字游戏).
A.Or even just take a shower!
B.It’s important to keep a healthy body.
C.The role of exercise is really important, too.
D.Use your phone to help you memorize things.
