Dear Jack,
I remember the moment — it truly hit me that your autism(自闭症) lasted forever. I had already mentally planned our trips up north with the boys. I was going to spend endless hours playing baseball with you — like Grandpa did with me.
When we said goodbye to kindergarten I knew it was real. I spent some time being sad. Now you are 8. You still have no words. We have never had one of those father-son moments I pictured when you were a baby. But I’m learning that’s OK. I still have unbelievable things to offer as your dad, even if they weren’t the things I originally expected.
You have taught me to be patient. You have taught me that it’s OK to be different and to be sad when life doesn’t go as planned. You have taught me that it is OK to talk about those feelings and fight for what is right. Stand up and say this is wrong, and encourage others to stand up for you and say the same.
My job on this earth is to create a world for you and other kids like you. Be the voice you don’t have, and build the kind of community which I want to see you grow up in. I used to shy a way from contacting people with disabilities or just not consider them. Before you were born, I was so caught up in my own world that I probably wouldn’t have even noticed. Now, I see things differently. I notice. You did that for me. And hope my example will do that for others.
Your mom and I have spent 8 years trying to find your voice. And honestly, we don’t know if we ever will. I promise you I will spend my life keeping you safe and making this world better for you.

2. How does the author sound in the text
A. Ashamed. B. Caring.
C. Regretful. D. Indifferent.

Attending a networking event at a restaurant to make small talk with strangers in hopes of making lasting connections is one of the most frightening things that I can imagine doing. When I went to these events, I was uncertain about how to connect with others.
I spent my 20’s and 30’s collecting and studying books on how to network, form friendships and build character. Yet, my networking skills didn’t improve at all.
There had to be a better way to build relationships. Carol Blymire, my instructor at Georgetown University, showed me that there was, according to her, the best way to build your network while also making friends is to join groups that focus on your hobbies. “For example, if you like to go swing dancing, you should join a swing dancing group,” Blymire told me. So I decided to start a book club that would put book lovers like me in the same room together.
I posted the notice of my first weekly meeting on in April 2022. Luckily, my two invited friends came, and we were joined by one other person we didn’t know. After the first event, more people started coming, and I started making new friends almost immediately. Then, in early October 2022, I hosted a party for my book club friends. 24 people showed up and I was excited. Today, close to 700 people have joined my Meetup group. I have made lots of connections within the first year alone.
My experience as a meeting organizer has taught me that I shouldn’t judge (判断) how connected I am to the world around me based on the number of people I know, but by the quality of my friendships. Building friendships takes time and effort, but I’ve discovered that it is possible to make real friends as an adult. One of the friends I made at my book club even toasted (为……举杯敬酒) my wife and me at our wedding (婚礼).

The number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools has dropped by 45% since 2000 a BBC study has found. The attitude to the research was mixed. Why learn a foreign language when English is spoken by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, some people wondered. Others questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is developing so quickly. However, many speakers of foreign languages praised the advantages.
Being introduced to languages at a young age is something that teacher Ellie Baker believes strongly in. She founded Bilingual Sing, which runs musical French and Spanish classes for children. “Since 2013, I’ve been teaching from babies upwards,” Ms Baker said. “We should prepare children for our uncertain future.”
Among the benefits of learning a second language is the possibility to “increase brain power (智力)”, Ms Baker said. Studies have suggested that learning a second language can slow brain aging, and can lead to higher mental function (心智功能).
“The future of our kids will not depend on academic (学业的) abilities as much as it has done,” she said. “We’re still really focused on academic grades. I’m not saying they are not important, but they’re not everything. We have to think about what the kids need for their future.”
Cassandra Scott, from Edinburgh, studied three languages in her final year at school: Advanced Higher French and German as well as beginner’s level Russian, which her French teacher taught “just for fun”.
Scott said, “Learning languages at school did wonders for my English, giving me a new view on my language and also more practice in learning literature, but more importantly, it set the course for my career (事业).”
Since studying translation, she has worked as an in-house translator and an assistant language teacher (of English) in Osaka, Japan. She is now a translator in Edinburgh.
“I love my job and I’ll always be thankful to my language teachers at school who taught me how to learn,” she said.
8. What does Ellie Baker suggest children do
A. Learn languages through music. B. Focus on their academic grades.

After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.
Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.
Every four-square-metre room provides a treadmill (跑步机) music, watch movies and check emails by connecting to the Internet by the screen fixed on the treadmill. But there’s no shower.
Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code for use. A refundable deposit (可退还的押金) of 99 yuan is required, and users are charged 1 yuan every 5 minutes.
The shared gym rooms are created by Misspao, a Beijing-based technology company founded in July. Within several months since it was founded, the company has already raised over 100 million yuan. However, the idea of the shared fitness experience is not totally new. Last December, the company VRUN set up shared treadmills in office and apartment buildings.
The sharing economy is still becoming popular in China. According to Yicai Global, confident people are pouring millions into sharing start-ups. In March, the State Information Centre published a report which says that the total value of China’s sharing economy will see a yearly growth of 40% in the coming years, and it is expected to make a great contribution to the country’s GDP.
12. Which of the following is a potential advantage of shared gym rooms over traditional gyms
A. They offer a wider variety of group exercise classes.
B. They are more suitable for large-scale social activities.
C. They are cheaper as they require no deposit.
D. They might be more conveniently located near neighborhoods.
13. What is the correct process for using a shared gym room
A. Scan the code, book the room, then locate it.
B. Pay the deposit, watch TV, then connect to the internet.
C. Locate the room, book it, then scan a QR code to use it.
D. Run on the treadmill, then get a refund automatically.
14. Who would benefit MOST from using a shared gym room
A. A professional athlete who needs intensive daily training.
B. A person living in an apartment who wants a convenient and private workout.
C. A family looking for a weekend activity to do together.
D. A tourist who wants to take a shower after sightseeing.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce shared gym rooms. B. To praise a technology company.
