Talking with Larry Miles, owner of La Unique Books and Cultural Center in Camden, New Jersey, is like listening to history. Since 1991, his store has been more than a place to buy books—it’s a spot to learn African and African American history. Yet Miles fears La Unique might soon be history.
“It’s been tough, really tough,” admitted the 88-year-old, who insists his work is unfinished. “I’m going to be 101, 102 at least. I have time.” He has launched a $20,000 GoFundMe campaign to keep the store going, replenish (补充) stock, repair his building, and create a place where Camden’s youth can learn about the culture and history shaping their lives.
The 6th Street storefront offers books, African-inspired jewelry, and educational videos. Behind it lies Miles’ impressive collection of African art and artifacts. Downstairs there is a reading room with a kitchen that once hosted book clubs, and a 70-seat theater in the back held film screenings and poetry readings.
But like other independent bookstores, La Unique struggles to survive against online retailers and e-readers. Lower sales limit stock, and Miles has been frustrated at lacking support from local schools and colleges. He urges them to source books through him, host events, and bring students to view his collections.
Lifelong resident Lindsey calls the store “astonishing”, noting Camden’s “grand past and future” remains undiscovered.
Miles dreams of opening a Camden museum for his artifacts to teach youth their roots from Africa to Europe to the Americas. “Schools aren’t using available tools to teach history,” he said. “I firmly believe in teaching American, African American, and African history to know where you came from, and how you got here.”
Miles felt a calling to do more than a profit. “Camden needs places to learn its own and African American history”, he said. “The city needs to give people, especially youth, something to be proud of by showing what is here to honor.”

Birds migrate for different reasons, often traveling long distances in search of food and better living conditions. In this experiment, you’ll use food to see if you can create a model bird migration.
Experimental Procedure
Finding a Place to Feed the Birds
You’ll need to find a place where there are large groups of birds that you can feed bread to. There should be at least 15 birds at the location you choose and make sure bird feeding is allowed.
Preparing for the Experiment
1.Before going to the bird-feeding location, tear one loaf of bread into pieces the size of a quarter coin.
2.Put one-third of the pieces into one plastic bag, and the remaining two-thirds into the second plastic bag.
Doing the Experiment
1.Setup:
*Position two bird feeders 20 feet apart, each inside a marked circle.
*Position the two bird feeders 10 feet or closer to the birds.
*Assign two bird counters and one person to handle the stopwatch.
2.Feeding & Counting: At “Go”, both feeders start throwing bread steadily within their circles. Every 2 minutes, the stopwatch holder calls “Time”, and bird counters record the number of birds in each circle.
3.Continuation: Repeat the process until bird feeder #1 runs out of bread. Feeder #2 continues feeding while counts continue every 2 minutes.
4.Final Counts: Stop when feeder #2 runs out of bread.
5.Repetition: Conduct the experiment two more times, either on different days or at locations with the same bird type.

When I was young, my family treated every vacation as a lesson in culture. We skipped beaches and amusement parks, heading instead to castles, museums, and ancient ruins. I remember being ten, standing before a 500-year-old painting, secretly wishing I were at a swimming pool.
As an adult, I carried on this tradition. When planning trips, I gathered guidebooks, eager to explore every cultural site. I felt it was my duty to absorb as much as possible about the places I visited. This mindset shaped my travels, yet it often made them tense and hurried. I was constantly rushing from one landmark to another, trying to stuff in facts and history, frequently forgetting to simply appreciate the moment.
However, everything changed on a short trip to Bequia, a small island in the Caribbean. I arrived with the usual expectations but soon realized there were no famous museums or historic landmarks to explore. Instead, there were peaceful beaches, calm crystal-clear waters, and warm, welcoming locals. At first, this felt unfamiliar and even disappointing. I grew restless with boredom, struggling to fill my days with the kind of meaningful activities I was used to.
As the days passed, I gradually let go of the need to “do something important”. I began to delight in simple pleasures: reading books purely for enjoyment, wandering along the sandy shore without a plan, and watching the ocean waves roll in without overthinking their meaning. For the first time, I felt truly relaxed. I experienced the quiet joy of simply being present, free from pressure or expectations.
By the end of my stay, I understood something vital: travel doesn’t always have to be about learning or sightseeing. Sometimes, its greatest gift is found in embracing the moment and enabling yourself to experience stillness. I returned home with a fresh insight that true travel is not just about discovering the world outside, but also about uncovering a deeper peace within.
8.How did the author find the travel in his childhood
A. In line with his interests. B. Centered on family bonds.
C. More like a cultural duty. D. Filled with expectations.
9.Why did the author feel uneasy when he arrived at Bequia
A. The island was small and crowded. B. There were no expected landmarks.
C. It was hard to communicate with locals. D. He hadn’t planned his daily activities in advance.
10.What did the trip to Bequia help the author realize
A. Short trips bring less comfort. B. Planning ensures perfect vacations.
C. Culture is more powerful than nature. D. True travel includes moments of stillness.
11.What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. A Childhood of Cultural Travel B. The Journey Without a Guidebook
C. Memories of Museums and Castles D. The Search for Meaningful Journeys

第二段提到,筹款用于维持书店运营(keep the store going)、补充库存(replenish stock),修复建筑(repair his building),为卡姆登青年创建一个学习文化历史的场所(create a place where Camden’s youth can learn about the culture and history)。
第四段提到迈尔斯“lacking support from local schools and colleges(缺乏学校和大学支持)”,并呼吁学校“source books through him ... bring students to view his collections”,可见他不满的是学校忽视其提供的三大资源:①书籍采购渠道(source books);②活动承办能力(host events);③教育参观资源(view collections),故B项正确。
由第六段可知,迈尔斯坚信应教授非裔历史以知来处(teach youth their roots、teaching American, African American, and African history to know where you came from);又由第七段可知,他强调城市需通过展示值得敬重的事物,让青年获得自豪感(give people, especially youth, something to be proud of by showing what is here to honor),由此可知“教授根源,建立自豪感”是其终极使命。

文章开头提到“In this experiment, you’ll use food to see if you can create a model bird migration.”(在这个实验中,你将使用食物来尝试创建一个鸟类迁徙模型),这直接表明文章与实验相关。
文章提到“Position the two bird feeders 10 feet or closer to the birds.”(将两个喂鸟器放置在距离鸟类10英尺或更近的位置)。
故选A。

首段提到作者的家庭将度假视为“文化课”(treated every vacation as a lesson in culture),目的地选择城堡、博物馆和古迹,而非娱乐场所(skipped beaches and amusement parks)。作者十岁时面对古画却渴望去游泳池(secretly wishing I were at a swimming pool)。
第三段第二句中明确提到“没有著名博物馆或历史地标”(no famous museums or historic landmarks),导致作者“感到陌生和失望”(unfamiliar and even disappointing),因为无法进行惯常的“有意义活动”(meaningful activities)而“无聊烦躁”(restless with boredom)。
最后一段总结旅行不必总是学习或观光,其价值在于拥抱当下,体验宁静(embracing the moment、experience stillness),并强调发现内心的深层平静的重要性(uncovering a deeper peace within)。 moments of stillness 是embracing the moment and enabling yourself to experience stillness的同义转述
