That youngsters were glued to online games on their smart phones was a great concern for Ngurang Meena, a school teacher in Nirjuli. The 30 year old social science teacher, who ran the Ngurang Learning Institute, an adult literacy centre, said that she felt disheartened when she read student papers.“The graph of student performance is falling every year.It breaks my heart whenever I see answer sheets — basic grammar skills are missing and there’s an absence of any cohesive (连贯的) expression. They lack guidance and their reading culture is almost zero,” Meena said. When her school and the centre she ran had to close due to infectious diseases, she planned to do something to address the problem.
Inspired by a similar proposal in Mizoram, Meena set up a bookshelf with around 80 books as well as some benches on the side of the road in Nirjuli on 30 August 2020, where passers by could spend time reading. The selections included motivational books, biographies and novels as well as comics for young children.“I have to please the minors with sweets to sit and read, but that is okay,” she laughed.
Meena’s bookshelf became a hit among youngsters who spent hours in the reading corner.Within two months, her effort became the talk of the town.
Now, generous contributions of books come in from the public and she is even receiving requests to set up such libraries in other parts of the state, including one in the capital, Itanagar.Since the tiny libraries are far from the main town, she also lends books out to those who want to read at home.
“I never thought that this would become such a big inspiration,” Meena said.“Since childhood, we have been told that books are our best friends. The next generation of kids is focused on games and other things.I don’t want them to head on the wrong track,” she added.
4. What’s the aim of Meena’s reading program
A. To care for youngsters lacking in reading.
B. To help adults learn some cohesive expression.
C. To keep Ngurang Learning Institute running well.
D. To highlight the importance of reading for adults.

B. She provided them with transportation.
C. She chose novels with beautiful covers.
D. She selected books covering every category.
6 Which words can best describe Meena’s libraries
A Small and useless.
B. Influential and meaningful.
C. Large but impractical.
D. Widespread but unwelcome.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Books:Sources of Knowledge
B. The Roadside Reading Corner
C. The Library:an Ideal place for the Young

Hair that is tightly coiled(盘绕) offers the best protection against the sun’s potentially damaging rays, which could explain why this trait evolved in early humans in Africa and straighter hair emerged as some humans moved into cooler areas.
It has long been suggested that the reason our body hair became so fine that it is sometimes barely visible, while our scalp hair remained thick, is to prevent our heads from overheating in the sun. In our bipedal(双足行走的) ancestors, the beneficial shading effect of head hair may have outweighed its insulating effect.
Tina Lasisi at Penn State University wondered if the type of hair on a person’s head also makes a difference. To learn more, Lasisi and her colleagues put three different wigs(假发) on a thermal manikin—a model of the human body with heaters and sensors that is used to measure the thermal effects of clothes. One of the three wigs was straight, one had moderate curls(卷) and one had tight curls. Lasisi says the tightly coiled wig was within the range of curl found in people of recent African ancestry.
The team found that the hair’s type made a big difference to how much heat the head of the manikin gained from simulated sunshine at 30℃ The head with a straight wig gained less than half as much heat as a control head with no wig. The head wearing the moderately curled wig gained around a quarter as much heat and the head with the tightly curled wig gained less than a tenth as much as the no-wig control.
The researchers think that the curls reduce how much heat reaches the skin by increasing the gap between it and the hair surface. Making straight hair longer doesn’t achieve this because it lies flat, says Lasisi.
The team also found when wetting the manikins to simulate sweat, the head with no wig lost twice as much heat via evaporation as those with the wigs. However, having any head hair more than halves the amount of sweat required to prevent the head from gaining heat, with tightly coiled hair reducing this more than moderately curled or straight hair, the result shows.
“Any mechanism that could help cool the body, and at the same time save precious water, would definitely have been acted on strongly by natural selection,” says Joseph Graves at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. The study findings are important because they could help change some people’s prejudiced views, says Graves.
8. What does the underlined word “trait” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Curl. B. Feature. C. Situation. D. Essence.
9. What will Tina Lasisi probably agree with
A. The three wigs were made of hair from different races.
B. The head with no wig gained the least amount of heat from the sun.
C. Wearing long straight hair could reduce the heat reaching the skin.
D. The head without a wig had the best cooling effect of sweating.
10. For what purpose was the research carried out
A. To gain insight into early humans. B. To prove all races are born equal.
C. To clarify a question. D. To learn about the use of wigs.
11. What might be the best title of the passage
A. Curly Hair Protects Us from the Sun B. Curly Hair Evolves into Straight Hair
C. Natural Selection Is What Really Counts D. A Study Changes Prejudiced Views
D
When babies are exposed to a variety of faces, they become more adept in recognizing and appreciating diversity, which can help reduce biases and prejudices as they grow. This is according to neuroscientist Saskia Koch of the Donders Institute and Radboud University.
Koch conducted her research using data from the Nijmegen longitudinal study. This study follows young people from infancy (婴儿期). First, the researchers looked at how frequently the teenagers had attended day care as babies. Then, the same youngsters were assigned the duty of playing a game when they reached the age of 17. In the game, they had to work with another person they couldn’t see. Both players had the same goal: find an object on a gameboard. Only the 17-year-old knew where the item was. The 17-year-olds had to communicate this location to each other without using words. They had to design communicative patterns that would assist the other person in locating the object. This could be accomplished, for example, by performing specific movements.
The 17-year-olds were informed they were playing with a 5-year-old in one game and an adult in another, despite the fact that it was the same individual each time. Initially, the 17- year-olds adjusted their communicative patterns when they thought they were interacting with the child by placing more emphasis on their movements. How quickly they abandoned this pattern depended on how much time they spent in day care. 17-year-olds who had come into contact with many different people as infants were more likely to get over a stereotype (刻板印象). They found out in the interaction that the “child” was also very good and then based their play on that.
According to the researcher this means that babies who have had more diverse social interactions can more easily let go of a stereotype later in life. They are more sensitive to social interaction and can more quickly let go of the image they have in their minds of their peers. Koch says, “Gaining many diverse social experiences early in life allows us to adapt better to the needs of our partners in social interaction. ”
12. What does the underlined word “adept” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Forgetful. B. Skillful. C. Interested. D. Disappointed.
13. What was the purpose of the game in the study
A. To confirm the data from the Nijmegen study.
B. To test the impacts of early social interactions.
C. To enhance the youngsters’ cooperative ability.
D. To assess the effects of communicative patterns.
14. How did the 17-year-olds first respond to the “child” in the game
A. They changed their fixed idea of a child. B. They adjusted the time spent on the game.
C. They performed more specific movements. D. They employed verbal interactive patterns.
15. What helps babies with future social contacts according to Koch
A. Interacting with various people. B. Engaging with diverse peers.
C. Adapting to the needs of partners. D. Letting go of the old images.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
After hours of cooking and arranging the table, your goal is simple: to create an unforgettable dining experience for your guests. But success isn’t just about fresh ingredients or cooking skills. ____16____
Colour’s influence starts with the first glance. ____17____ The brain processes colour information and links it to taste, making us judge the same dish as delicious, average, or unappealing. So, making the food visually attractive is key, as guests will assume it tastes as good as it looks.
For picky eaters, bowl colour is crucial. ____18____ They often find meals in red or blue bowls saltier than in white ones. A red bowl can also make them hesitant to try new dishes, and they might even refuse food if the bowl’s colour doesn’t suit them. Choosing the right tableware colour is top priority here.
White plates are usually a safe choice, but avoid them with pale foods, which will look tasteless. They work well with vibrant dishes like salads or roasted meats, making the food’s colours stand out. For desserts, white plates enhance sweetness and flavor intensity.
____19____ Black plates, for example, can make food seem saltier and larger in portion. This means dark tableware needs careful consideration of the dish’s flavor and portion size. On the contrary, bright plates add creativity and highlight less colorful foods but can go wrong. ____20____ matching the plate’s colour too closely to the food can make portions seem smaller, as everything blends.
Understanding colour psychology lets you turn a simple meal into a memorable experience — all through smart tableware choices. It allows you to guide your guests’ perceptions subtly, ensuring that each dish not only tastes wonderful but also feels perfectly suited to the moment.
A. Dark plates have more varied effects.
B. They prefer simple tableware without any patterns.
C. The wrong bright shade makes food look artificial.
D. That initial visual impression brings about a chain reaction.
E. Using the wrong colour can ruin the overall dining mood.
F. Their reactions to tableware colours are often more sensitive.
G. The colour of tableware like plates, shapes how guests feel about the food.

One afternoon, Emma and I were walking home from school, chatting about our day. Emma, with her curious eyes shining, asked me about my friendship with Lucy. Without thinking, I said, “I only hung out with Lucy because she wanted me to, but I didn’t really want to be friends with her. She was kind of boring.”
Unluckily, I didn’t know Lucy was nearby. When I looked up, she was right there, having heard everything. Her face turned pale, and her eyes got big with surprise. She didn’t say anything and ran off. Emma and I just stood there, feeling bad. I knew I should go after Lucy and say sorry, but I was too shocked to move. Emma’s face turned red too. We walked home without talking, and it felt like our steps were getting heavier.
The next days were hard. I felt really bad about what I said and wanted to fix things with Lucy. I needed to say sorry. But what should I say Even though I didn’t mean to, I hurt Lucy’s feelings. Every time I saw her at school, I looked away quickly.
Then, something interesting happened in our speaking class. On Tuesday, Ms. Julia said we would do pre-class speeches. She had written our topics on small pieces of paper and put them in a box. We had to pick one without knowing what it was. I was a bit nervous. When I reached into the box, I pulled out a paper that said, “Tell your most embarrassing moment.” My heart was beating fast. It felt like I was given a chance to make things right.
I spent the next few days practicing my speech, trying to find the right words to apologize to Lucy. I wanted to be sincere and show her I was sorry. When the day of the speech came, I was still nervous, but I knew it was important to face my mistake. I stood in front of the class, took a deep breath, and began to share my story, hoping it would help me and Lucy move forward.
注意:1. 续写词数应为90词左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
