One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.
In the library I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. But one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
Years later, my mother was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.
4 Why did the author’s mother order him to borrow a book
A. Because the public library was near.
B. Because the author was a lazy student.
C. Because borrowing books was cheaper.
D. Because she wanted to cure his problem.
5. What can we learn about the author’s dog
A. Its name was Amos. B. It was one of his favorite pets.
C. It was adopted by someone else. D. It was secretly stolen from him.
6. What was the function of the book the author borrowed from the library
A. It opened a door to his reading. B. It reminded him of his childhood.
C. It proved his mother was wrong. D. It improved his imagination.
7. Which one could be the best title of the passage
A. Mum’s Strict Order B. The Charm of a Book
C. Reunion with My Beagle D. My Passion for Reading
An ice bath or cold plunge typically involves putting yourself into very cold water. Ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates all praised the benefits of cold water in helping keep healthy. “This has been around for a really long time,” says Dr. Georgine Nanos, a family physician.
“But research shows that the effectiveness of ice baths depends on their intended purpose. Especially for starters, moderation (适度) is key,” Nanos says. “Getting colder is possible, but you need to be extra careful. Cold plunges aren’t for everyone, especially those with some possible diseases.”
From a scientific standpoint, cold water exposure (接触) brings about a series of changes in the body. It can help you stay more awake. What’s more, cold water makes your body create heat. This temporarily raises your metabolism (新陈代谢),which some believe could help lose weight. That’s the scientific idea, but the evidence for that should be explored more,” Nanos explains.
So, how do those physiological changes actually help us Healthcare providers and experts have mostly depended on small clinical studies or observational data to support the potential health benefits of cold-water immersion (浸泡). But now, experts are doing more well-rounded reviews of all the research to learn more about this popular practice. Even so, everyone agrees we need more studies to understand its effects fully.
A 2025 review found no immediate reduction in stress following an ice bath. However, there were improvements in sleep quality and overall quality of life, although no significant changes in mood were observed. A 2023 review found that an ice plunge can help reduce muscle soreness and tiredness immediately after exercise. And they also found that time in freezing water could reduce so-called explosive performance — such as the ability to jump high — immediately after getting out of cold water.
So, the bottom line: if you enjoy an ice bath and experience benefits, go for it. “And if it makes you feel awful, stop,” Ethan Smith, another physician, advises. “However, if the cold water calls to you, dive in.”
8. Why are ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To show cold water has long been used for health.
B. To argue ice baths were more widely used in ancient times.
C. To prove ice baths are the most effective way to treat diseases.
D. To compare their views on cold water with modern scientific research.
9. What does Nanos consider important for beginners of ice baths
A. Avoiding the coldest water at first.
B. Keeping the practice reasonable.
C. Turning to healthcare providers for help.
D. Doing ice baths every day to develop a habit.
10. What is one possible influence of cold-water exposure according to some people
A. It cures certain diseases. B. It slows one’s blood flow.
C. It helps people slim down. D. It improves one’s ability to jump high.
11. What is Ethan’s suggestion regarding ice baths
A. They should be taken on a regular basis.
B. They are only suitable for those who have no health problems.
C. Everyone should try them at least once to experience benefits.
D. One should decide whether to do them based on their own feelings.
Having a hobby can greatly enrich a teenager’s life. Hobbies can increase physical activity and social interaction, provide stress relief, teach valuable skills, and of course be a lot of fun! However, many teens are unwilling to try a hobby. So you need to use some insight and gentle guidance to help your teens to explore their interests and find their perfect hobby.
Ask your teens what makes them feel good about themselves. One way to help a teenager find a hobby is to pay attention to their strengths and what makes them feel good. Many teens may only focus on weaknesses or things they have failed in. Instead, emphasize anything that they enjoy doing or that makes them happy. A person doesn’t have to be good at a hobby to enjoy it. Hobbies aren’t necessarily talents. As long as they feel good while doing it, it can turn into a hobby.
Ask your teens what they want to do. Maybe your teen has been wanting to try something for a long time but has been unsure if you would agree to it. However, you might just get a shrug (耸肩) in response (回应). That is normal. Asking “What do you want to do ” is a pretty vague (模糊的) and broad question. Tell your teens to think about it, and then ask them about it later.
Determine if your teen has already taken part in hobbies. Teenagers spend much of their life away from the eyes of parents and don’t always offer up information. As a result, sometimes adults are not entirely aware (意识到的) that teens are developing hobbies. Your child may be developing hobbies away from home, so you may not have to encourage them to take up new ones. Instead, you can support their present hobbies.
12. What can you do if your teens are uninterested in developing a hobby
A. You can compare them with other kids with hobbies.
B. You can have a talk with them and give some guidance.
C. You can tell them how perfect a person is if he has a hobby.
D. You can provide them with money to explore their interests.
13. What plays a deciding role in developing a hobby
A. value. B. Success. C. Enjoyment. D. Talent.
14. Why are some parents unaware of their children’s hobbies
A. They are too busy to talk to the children.
B. They are not able to understand teens’ world.
C. The children are too shy to share their ideas.
D. The children don’t talk about this with them.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Some Helpful Guidance for Teens B. Help Your Teen to Find the Perfect Hobby
C. A Dialogue between Parents and Children D. Having a Hobby Is Important to Everyone

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised prizes for those who get a score of 100”. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well-prepared for the test.”
Peter carefully checked the spelling of each word when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote the word on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am going to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent in the spelling test.”
Mr. White praised them. He gave each of the three students a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary — the one he liked most. Peter was so excited that he held it high as his classmates cheered. “This is making me so happy,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White had given the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter compared it to the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelt it wrong.
“What should I do ” Peter said to himself. “I want my classmates to think I’m a master of spelling. If I tell Mr. White I got one wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back or I will tell a lie.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Staring at the “100%” mark written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought.
