Science can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.
Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband or a wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (紧张) levels and blood pressure in people—half of them are pet owners—while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic (算术) or held a hand in ice water. Subjects (被测试者) completed the tasks alone, with a husband or a wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to base line heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer maths mistakes than doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.
A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise overall—mostly with their dogs—and found it worth doing.

A.What pets bring to their owners. B.How pets help people calm down.
C.People’s opinions of keeping pets. D.Pets’ value in medical research.
34.What pets cannot do for people

C.To reduce loneliness. D.To change our eating habits.
35.The subjects were tested with ________.
A.a husband or a wife B.a close friend
C.a pet D.all of the above
36.According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facing stressful tasks

Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of stress. This feeling is often called “culture shock”. It is important to understand and learn how to deal with it if you want to adapt successfully to your new home’s culture.
Generally speaking, there are several stages you will experience if you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually known as the excitement stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it isn’t long before the excitement stage moves into the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to stress. It seems that everything is difficult; the language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick. This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock”. However, culture shock doesn’t last for very long. If you are one of those who manage to overcome it, you’ll move into the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home, and prefect certain aspects of the new culture to your own culture.
Culture shock is normal. Everyone in a new situation will go through some form of it. Be brave, and overcoming culture shock is a piece of cake.

45.根据“Be brave, and overcoming culture shock is a piece of cake.” No, he doesn’t.
46.根据“It seems that everything is difficult; the language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick.” They may feel anxious and homesick, find the language hard to learn, have difficulty making friends, and face challenges in simple tasks like shopping.
47.根据文章第二至四段“the excitement stage, culture shock, recovery stage, ”和“The last stage is the “home” stage.”
48.根据“When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.” Because they are interested in the new culture, and everything seems exciting and everyone seems friendly in the new environment.
49.根据文章第四段“This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home, and perfect certain aspects of the new culture to your own culture.” It is the stage when people start to feel at home in the new culture and begin to adapt aspects of it to their own culture.
Understand and learn how to deal with culture shock. ②Be brave and try to overcome the difficulties in the process.
51.After hearing this exciting news, Jimmy rushed up the stairs, taking three steps at a time.
听到这个激动人心的消息后:after hearing this exciting news,时间状语,位于句首,首字母大写,用逗号隔开;冲上楼梯:rush up the stairs;一步三个台阶:take three steps at a time,用现在分词形式,作状语。 After hearing this exciting news, Jimmy rushed up the stairs, taking three steps at a time.
52.We required a lamp to be hung in the front of the boat at night, so that we could see more clearly.
分析句子可知,句子时态为一般过去时,主语是we;需要:required,此处用动词过去式;一个灯:a lamp;在船前:in the front of the boat;在晚上:at night;以至于:so that;看:see;清楚地:clearly。故填We required a lamp to be hung in the front of the boat at night, so that we could see more clearly.
53.The room is clean and tidy except for a few books on the table.
except for“除了”;a few“一些,几个”,后接可数名词book“书”的复数形式;on the table“桌子上”;the room“这个房间”;clean and tidy“又干净又整洁”;句子为主系表结构,时态为一般现在时,主语为the room,be动词用is。故填The room is clean and tidy except for a few books on the table.
