When I signed up for a triathlon (铁人三项) years ago, I had one goal. It wasn’t to win the race-or even to place in the top half . My goal was simple: not to finish in the last place. Second to last OK. So long as I was not the last. I wanted to avoid the shame and mockery of a participation trophy. After all, my son, Zane, would join it. I didn’t want him to perceive his dad as a loser. I’m not much of an athlete. I find lung-burning aerobic exercise deeply unpleasant. But that summer my son came up with a drastic proposal: Let’s do a triathlon together! I felt I couldn’t say no.
When we got to the base camp, I found these folks were well-prepared with sharply defined muscles. Don’t panic, I told myself, there must be a few even less prepared than I was.
We lined up by the shore and dived into the bay. The icy water made me gasp. Zane pulled away with strong freestyle strokes. I resorted to the breaststroke. Eventually I made it back to land. I ran to my bike and started pedaling along the hilly course. After 12 miles, there were several racers behind me.
I wasn’t in last place. When I glanced back, I saw a woman maybe in her 70s. I can take her, I told myself. In the final mile, her sneaker-steps got louder and faster. I watched her pull away and disappear. There I was. Alone. I refused to walk although walking would probably have been faster than my foot dragging running. Worse, I was joined by a four-wheeled symbol of shame: the official ambulance behind me.
Finally, I crossed the finish line, 121st out of 121 racers. Zane hugged and congratulated me. I was embarrassed. I thought of an impressive number of excuses. But on our way back, the humiliation faded. My embarrassment was gradually replaced by pride. I had reframed my last-place finish as a victory.
I’m not a loser. I’m a triathlete and a role model for my son! Persistence and resilience, that’s what I displayed. I was racing against myself instead of others. Plus, my son did great, placing somewhere in the middle. I love that. Also, there is something glorious about last place. I may not be a great athlete, but I am a champion at changing the narrative, which might be more useful than athletic ability.

Two-thirds of all irrigated(灌溉的) agriculture in the world is likely to be affected in some way by declining glaciers and dwindling snowfall in mountain regions, driven by the climate crisis, according to a UNESCO report.
More than 1 billion people live in mountainous regions and, of those in developing countries, up to half are already experiencing food insecurity. That is likely to worsen, as food production in such regions is dependent on mountain waters, melting snow and glaciers (冰川), according to the World Water Development Report 2025. Developed countries are also at risk: in the US, for example, the Colorado River basin has been in drought since 2000, and higher temperatures mean more water falls as rain instead of snow. Rain runs off much faster than melting snow, making dry conditions even worse.
The largest three-year loss of glacier mass on record occurred in the past three years, according to separate research from the World Meteorological Organization, with Norway and Sweden among the worst-affected areas. Eastern Africa has lost 80% of its glaciers in places. Glaciers in the Alps, the worst affected in Europe, have shrunk by about 40% over roughly the same period.
The decline of glaciers has had a further impact, added Abou Amani, director of water sciences at UNESCO. “Glaciers melting have an impact on the reflectivity of (solar) radiation and that will impact the whole climate system,” he warned. More avalanches(雪崩) will also occur, as rain falling on snow is a major factor behind avalanche formation. Pooling water from melting glaciers can also be released, causing sudden floods in valleys or to people living further down the side of the mountain.
These impacts are coming at a time when many food sources are already under pressure. Alvaro Lario, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development and chair of UN-Water, called for more support for people who live in affected mountain regions. “Water flows downhill, but food insecurity rises uphill. Mountains provide 60% of our freshwater, but the communities that safeguard these vital resources are among the most food insecure,” he said.
8. What does the underlined word “dwindling” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Increasing. B. Wasting. C. Decreasing. D. Changing.
9. What factors contributing to food insecurity are mentioned in the passage
A. Declining glaciers and more avalanches.
B. Dry conditions and rain falling on snow.
C. Climate impacts and lack of modern irrigation technology.
D. Dependence on glacier-fed water and stressed food sources.
10. Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 3
A. To predict future trends of glacier melting. B. To stress the severity of global glacier loss.
C. To call for policy in the worst-affected regions. D. To list the decline of glacier in different regions.
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Melting Glaciers, Rising Hunger B. Climate Change, Water Shortage
C. Threats to Mountain Communities D. Flood Risks from Melting Glaciers
D
Early in my academic career, I noticed that one of the most popular classes on campus was Introduction to Astronomy, a general-science course. The students all loved it — especially the non-science majors. I asked an economics student why she enjoyed it so much. She didn’t say anything about stars, but she said something about earthly existence. “When I go into class on Thursday mornings, I am stressed out about my life,” she told me. “But 90 minutes later, I feel relief because I am just a speck on a speck.”
She was expressing a profound truth. We tend to believe that to be happier, we need to become bigger in our own mind and in the minds of others. But that’s wrong. What we really need to achieve both the perspective on life and the peace is to get smaller in relation to everything and everyone else. When we experience our own littleness, we can relax into a humble reality of not being the object of attention and criticism, and we can appreciate a magnificent universe without spoiling it with our self-absorption.
You know that you are not the center of most things in life. It is very possible that your own great-grandchildren will not know your name. And yet, when you don’t recognize these truths, you will have the illusion that you are the focus of intense outside interest. But this comes at a cost: Thinking about yourself all the time makes you miserable over the long term. Researchers have shown that such self-focus can provoke emotional problems, making social situations or task performance feel frightening and unpleasant. Self-focus is especially deleterious for people who by nature have high social anxiety.
An additional downside is that self-focus makes performing skilled tasks less enjoyable. In a study of basketball players published in 2002, sports psychologists instructed one group of players to focus on their own performance during warm-up. These players experienced higher anxiety than others who were not given this instruction.
All of this might strike you as strange. Getting happier often requires you to resist your natural tendencies. The world is constantly inviting you to try to make yourself appear bigger in others’ eyes and in your own; this fact underpins the entire social-media business model. However, the trick to finding happiness is to get smaller.
12. What is the author’s main purpose in quoting the economics student in para. 1
A. To introduce the viewpoint.
B. To show the effects of astronomy knowledge.
C. To demonstrate the common anxiety problems.
D. To stress the courses’ popularity among non-majors.
13. What is the main idea of para. 3
A. People know they are not the world’s center.
B. Ignoring external evaluation can bring happiness.
C. Excessive self-focus cause distress and discomfort.
D. Self-importance determines one’s life value.
14. What is the possible outcome if a musician is instructed to focus on their techniques
A. They would stay in full control of their performance.
B. They would feel more anxious and reduced enjoyment.
C. Their technique would receive praise from the audience.
D. They would enjoy the glory fueled by self-focus.
15. Which of the following sayings can best illustrate the author’s opinion
A. Still waters run deep.
B. The bigger the head, the smaller the world.
C. A small leak will sink a great ship.
D. To know oneself is the beginning of wisdom.

“Another A+, and I'll get you that new game you've been wanting,” my mom said with a smile. It was just the motivation I needed. I was usually a pretty good student, but with that extra push, I was determined to do well on my next math test. Every evening, I buried myself in my notes, practicing problems. My confidence grew with every completed practice test.
When the big day arrived, I felt ready. I took a deep breath as I entered the classroom and tried to keep calm. But despite all the preparation, my nerves got the better of me. Halfway through the test, I blanked on a formula (公式), and time was running out. I scribbled down (潦草写下) the best answers I could and handed in my paper, hoping for the best.
A week later, I got the test back. My heart sank as I saw the big red “A-” at the top. “No game,” I thought miserably (痛苦地). It wasn't a bad grade, but it wasn't enough. Disappointed, I stared at the grade, wishing it could magically turn into an “A+”. I could almost hear my mom's voice, full of pride, congratulating me on my hard work. The idea gnawed (折磨) at me until I did something I never thought I'd do — I changed the “-” into a “+”.
The moment I got home, I handed the test to my mom with a forced smile. She looked at it and congratulated me, hugging me proudly. For a moment, I felt a rush of happiness. But deep down, guilt started to bubble up. I kept thinking about what I'd done. My parents always taught me to be honest and work hard, and I had broken that trust. That night, I couldn't sleep, thinking about how I'd lied to my mom. My conscience (良心) felt heavier and heavier with each passing day.
注意:1、续写词数应为 150 左右;
2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

___17___. You would come across a piece that catches your eye during your travels. However, buying on impulse can lead to regrets. This is particularly true when you choose something because it’s convenient or because you felt pressured by the seller.
One key aspect to keep in mind when shopping for a souvenir is its practical value. ___18___. Focus on practical items that could be used as mementos, like a cozy blanket or a handwoven rug. These items can be used regularly, reminding you of the trip long after you’ve returned home.

An item used every day can carry the essence of a place. ___19___. A rug, for instance, would be perfect for a trip to Morocco, whereas a painting might suit a visit to Peru.
When trying to pick the perfect souvenir, it’s important to balance practicality with personal meaning. You don’t have to follow trends. Instead, choose something that represents your own experience. ___20___. For instance, if you visit a local market, ask about the history of the item or whether it has a specific meaning. This connection adds to the significance of the souvenir.

A. The memory of a souvenir is its best value.
B. For some, a souvenir should serve a functional purpose.

【答案】Dear Peter,
I am writing to inform you that our school will launch a fire escape drill this Friday.
The fire escape drill is scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m., lasting approximately two hours. All the students are required to stay in their own classrooms first. Then the fire alarm will sound. Meanwhile, the firemen will make some artificial smoke in the corridor. On seeing the smoke, the students are supposed to evacuate the building in a quick and orderly way under the guidance of the teachers. Half an hour later, we will run the drill again. The drill is of great significance, which ensures we students know the right steps to take in case a fire breaks out in a building.
Do come and take part in the drill.

【答案】范文:
After a few days of holding onto the secret, I couldn’t take it anymore. Sitting with my parents one evening, I took a deep breath and confessed, “Mom, Dad, I need to tell you something about my grade.” They looked at me, surprised and a bit worried. “I ... I didn’t actually get an A+. I got an A-, and I changed it to make you happy.” For a moment, there was silence. My mom’s face softened as she looked at me, and my dad took a deep breath. “We’re disappointed, but we’re proud that you decided to tell us the truth,” my dad said gently. “Changing the grade wasn’t right, but you’ve learned something important.”
Later that night, I reflected on everything. I’d learned that there are no shortcuts to trust or achievement. More importantly, I realized how much my parents cared, not for a perfect grade, but for my character. I promised myself that next time, I’d own my efforts and be honest, no matter the outcome. As I drifted to sleep, I felt a sense of peace, knowing I’d done the right thing. I was ready to work hard, no shortcuts, and make them proud for the right reasons.
