Unit 11 Conflict and Compromise
Lesson 1 Living in a Community
Six Feet Lane
In the Qing dynasty, a top official, Zhang Ying, resolved conflicts with his neighbors, the Wu family, in his hometown of Tongcheng, Anhui.
The Zhang family wanted to build a house, while the neighbors also wanted to build a house. The Zhang family wrote to Zhang Ying to seek help. Zhang responded saying, “What if you yield (让步) three feet for them ” The Zhang family did so. The Wu family was touched and also yielded three feet. The two walls thus formed a six-foot lane.
“Six Feet Lane” tale tells us when faced with conflicts, sometimes we need to step three feet back to consider things from other people’s perspective and make a compromise.
If you encounter a neighbourhood conflict, what will you do to resolve it
Skim through the text “Drummer Hits the Road ” and figure out what it is about.

1. What did the neighbours complain about Ma Ming
He often held parties at night, but the biggest problem is his tendency to drum late at night.
2. What were the influences of Ma Ming’s behaviours on his neighbours
They were being driven mad being exposed to such noise.
They rarely got a full night’s sleep.
They couldn’t relax or read a book without plugging their ears.
They also claimed that Ma Ming had a bad influence on his teenager son.
3. What did the community council do Why did they take action
They took a vote, gave Ma Ming a warning and told him that he ought to cease drumming or leave the property. Because after such a chorus of complaints, they had to take action.
4. Where is Ma Ming now What is his attitude towards the resolution
He is now in a hotel in Shanghai.
Ma Ming felt that they were prejudiced against him. He is bitter over the fact that people thought of his music as “noise”. Otherwise, he didn’t really mind having to leave the flat.

What are the features of a news report
Features of a news report:
A clear structure (inverted pyramid: lead, body, tail)
Eye-catching title
Brief lead
Include the who, when, where, what, why and how of the event
Formal and clear language
Retell the story
Choose a role from either report, e.g. Ma Ming, one of Ma Ming’s neighbours, James, Smith or Laurene. Tell the story from that person’s perspective.
Your story might go like this:
I am Ma Ming…
I am James…
Do you think the conflicts in two stories are well solved What other ways can you think of to deal with the conflicts
I think both conflicts can be solved in a more peaceful way because both ways are quite straightforward and a bit violent.
For Ma Ming’s conflict: He can negotiate an agreement with the community council on a couple of hours he could drum during the day.
For Smith and McKay’s conflict: The McKays could have communicated with Smith earlier about their complaints so that Smith might have changed his ways of doing things.
How can we live harmoniously in a community, especially when usually there are conflicts between neighbours
Respect the privacy and differences of neighbors.
Put yourself in your neighbor’s shoes: Informing your neighbours ahead of time if you are planning to do something that might affect your neighbours.
Be positive about your neighbour. Don’t always assume that your neighbour is doing something on purpose to annoy you.
Don’t react defensively when your neighbour comes to you with their problem. Listen to what they are saying.
Foster (促成) open communication.
Cultivate a sense of community.
Express Yourself
You are Li Hua. Your desk mate, Mark, always askes you questions or talks to you during classes and evening self-study periods, which disturbs you a lot.
How would you resolve this conflict Talk from both people’s perspectives.
和而不同
Harmony but not Uniformity
Harmony and Diversity
The ultimate goal is to build a _________________community with a shared future.
