The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta (加尔各答). The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I also wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
41. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.

Recorded classes are now a usual part of teaching. College students often try to learn more in less time by watching these recordings at double their normal speed or even faster. But does this influence their understanding
A new study shows that students can remember information quite well when watching video lessons at up to twice their normal speed. But if they go faster than that, things will become harder to understand, said Alan Castel, senior author of the study.
The researchers did several tests to see how faster speeds influenced learning and knowledge retention (保留). They divided 231 college students into three groups and. had them watch two video lessons. They were asked not to stop the videos or take notes. Right after watching, these students were given tests on the videos. The normal-speed group averaged 26 correct answers out of 40, while the double-speed group scored 25. The 2.5-speed group did worse, answering only about 22 questions correctly. A week later, the same groups were given different tests on the videos to check what they’d remembered.
“People generally speak about 150 words per minute, and earlier research has shown that understanding begins to worsen when speech reaches double speed. So I was astonished that video speed had little influence on both quick and later understanding until it was more than twice the normal speed,” said lead author Dillon Murphy, a doctoral student in psychology.
“College students can save time and learn better by watching pre-recorded lessons at faster speeds, as long as they use the saved time for extra study,” Murphy said. “However, we warn against using this method just to save time. Students can improve their grades if they spend the saved time on activities such as reviewing flashcards (抽认卡) or taking practice tests.” The researchers also noticed that the method of speeding up video might not work well for especially difficult course materials.
46. What does the study show about watching video lessons at faster speeds
A. It works well with videos at double speed. B. It greatly influences students’ listening ability
C. It interests students to focus more on their courses. D. It has become a necessary part of students’ learning.
47. How did the researchers carry out the study
A. By teaching students to record short videos.
B. By collecting students’ views on video speed.
C. By tracking students’ brain activity with technology.
D. By comparing students’ mastery of videos at different speeds.
48. What does the underlined word “astonished” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Surprised. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed.
49. What does Murphy point out about speeding up videos
A. Students should use this method for relaxation. B. It can hardly be supported by college teachers.
C. Students should use the method properly. D. It is suitable for difficult subjects.
50. What is the main idea of the passage
A. How college students can save time on their studies.
B. The influence of speeding up video lessons on learning.
C. Why difficult courses should not be watched at fast speeds.
D. The best ways to improve grades by using video materials.

In be United States the most popular form of folk dancing has been square-dancing since the earlier days. In those days, men and women worked in groups to build a house or harvest crops. When the work was done, they usually danced merrily and happily in a store or in a farm kitchen.
Nowadays square-dancing is still performed. A square, which has four sides, is formed by four couples. Each couple stands on one side of the square, the man on the left and the woman on the right. That is to say, one square has eight people and they stand facing the center of the square.
Large or small numbers of people can dance together. Sometimes as many as 800 or 1,000 people may be dancing all at the same time.
Costumes are worn by those who do the square-dancing. This makes the dancing more colorful to watch. Men may have colored shirts and western trousers they wear only on special days. Women often wear full skirts of different colors with a pretty blouse. In some country areas, everyone wears their best clothes.
