For Li Donglin, an 18-year-old senior high school student, this past summer was all about cultural relic sites. He joined the cultural relics census (普查) team in Huanghua, Hebei, becoming its youngest member. This census is part of the fourth national cultural relics census, which started in November 2023 and is set to end by June 2026. Its goal is to record and get a deep understanding of the conditions of immovable cultural heritage sites, including ancient sites and tombs across the country.
Li’s love for cultural relics began at an early age. Since childhood, he has enjoyed collecting things and now has over 100 cultural artifacts (手工艺品). Li also has repaired many artifacts, improving this skill by learning from all kinds of sources.
Despite his strong connection to ancient artifacts, this was his first time taking part in a cultural relics census. “I thought at first that the census was just about visiting sites and doing a simple investigation,” Li told Teens. However, the census work turned out to be quite opposite. In the investigation of cultural relics, measuring areas is a major task. To provide a better description of the ancient village site in Changguo Town in Huanghua, the team had to walk a long way to work out the site’s boundaries (界限). In the hot summer sun, Li made his way through overgrown corn fields to identify the boundaries in all directions, often walking up to 30,000 steps per day.
During these walks, he also needed to do some digging. “After digging, we examined the soil to find any signs of cultural relics,” Li said. “This step is key to making sure we get the boundaries right and don’t miss any relics.” Then, the team used special tools to work out the site’s total area.
“It is hard work, but being able to describe each site so that each site receives the most protection makes us very happy,” Li said.
24. What is the purpose of the national cultural relics census
A. To establish a national registry of cultural relics.
B. To promote tourism in historical sites nationwide.
C. To train young students in archaeological techniques.
D. To identify the most valuable historical sites nationwide.
25. Which of the following words can best describe the census work
A. Simple. B. Fruitless. C. Demanding. D. Unnecessary.
26. What is Li Donglin like
A. Lazy and indecisive. B. Impatient and picky.
C. Humorous and adventurous. D. Determined and knowledgeable.
27. What is the best title of the text
A. 18-Year-Old Teenager Leads Cultural Relics Survey
B. High Schooler Joins National Cultural Relics Census

Since November 2022, ChatGPT has drawn the world’s attention, showing millions of users around the globe the amazing power of AI. Asking ChatGPT4, an AI chatbot, to write a 100-word email might take just a few seconds. However, this causes great environmental problems.
The biggest problem is the water the AI chatbot uses in its lifetime. Once turned on, AI equipment (设备) gets very hot and depends on cold water from cooling towers to remove the heat. According to The Washington Post, for every 100-word email that it creates, ChatGPT4 needs 519 milliliters of water, or a little more than a bottle. Each year, ChatGPT4 uses over 435 million liters of water for writing emails alone— enough to support a US family for 1,050years or enough to plant a forest of 2,050 acres.
Meanwhile, AI needs electricity. The Washington Post noted that writing a 100-word email requires 0.14 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which can power 14 LED lights for one hour. Every year in the US, ChatGPT4 uses up more than 120,000 megawatt-hours of power just to help write working emails. This is enough to support all homes in Washington DC for 20 days.
That’s not all. An AI chatbot’s “carbon (碳) footprint” starts long before the chatbot gets the public. For example, training ChatGPT3 produced around 502 tons of carbon. This is the same as driving 112 cars for a year, according to Shirin Dora, a researcher at Loughborough University in the UK.
Now, businesses are looking for different ways to make AI more environmentally friendly. Microsoft uses cold metal plates with pipes of cold water to cool equipment, which reduces water usage. Renewable energy is also helpful, for example, Tencent’s data center in Tianjin is powered by solar energy (太阳能).
28. What is the main environmental issue caused by AI chatbots
A. Noise pollution. B. Water overuse.
C. Deforestation. D. Digital waste.
29. How is the environmental problem of AI explained in the text
A. By listing numbers. B. By quoting experts.
C. By presenting the causes. D. By making a prediction.
30. Why is Tencent’s data center mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To show the use of renewable energy in AI.
B. To list the advantages of traditional energy.
C. To highlight the high electricity waste of AI.
D. To compare the water usage of different AI products.
31. What is the text mainly talking about
A. The wide application of AI chatbots.
B. The effects of AI on people’s daily life.
C. The solutions to making AI much greener.
D. The environmental problems brought by AI.

Cities are developing rapidly, and the expansion of cities is making it more difficult for people to connect with nature. While some urban (城市的) areas might have small parks, true wildness is hardly seen. A study led by the University of Washington shows that wild nature is especially beneficial(有益的) for our health, more so than other types of nature.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Sustainable Cities, suggests that experiencing wildness is important for our well-being. It focused on Discovery Park in Seattle, a large urban park that faces development pressures. The park’s advisory board wanted to know what aspects of the park were most important to visitors, to help inform future decisions about its development.
Researchers surveyed hundreds of park visitors about their meaningful interactions with nature. They found that experiences such as meeting with wildlife, walking by water, and enjoying views were highly valued. The park’s wildness, like unmanaged land, biodiversity (生物多样性), old growth trees, and open spaces, were influential.
The study showed that nearly every meaningful interaction was related to the park’s wildness. For example, seeing a bald eagle or birds on an old tree was influential because these are creatures of the wild. The researchers believe that creating a language for these nature experiences is important, as it helps people recognize and take part in activities that are meaningful.
The researchers hope their study can influence decisions about park and urban natural area development. They have created a handbook to guide similar studies globally, aiming to preserve the human benefits of nature. By understanding what people value in nature, cities can make more informed decisions about development, ensuring that the benefits of wildness are not lost with urban development. This study could play a key role in shaping how we develop parks and urban natural areas, ensuring that we don’t lose the benefits of wildness in our cities.
32. What does the underlined word “expansion” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Growth. B. Design. C. Limit. D. Tradition.
33. What is the focus of the study discussed in the text
A. The benefits of managed parks in cities.
B. The limited role of urban green spaces.
C. The effect of development on urban wildlife.
D. The importance of experiencing wild nature in cities.
34. What is the researchers’ goal in creating a nature language
A. To help people appreciate nature experiences.
B. To encourage more development of green spaces.
C. To promote greater usage of technology in nature.
D. To highlight the economic value of urban natural areas.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The research process of the study. B. The practical value of the study.
C. The history of urban park development. D. The economic outcome of preserving parks.

The laughter and soccer games of his homeland felt like a distant dream, and in this new land, Baraka found himself unhappy. And he didn’t want to play with the other kids or join any after-school activities.
Miss Garcia, his teacher, noticed Baraka’s sadness. She saw how he kept to himself during lunch and didn’t join in class activities. Miss Garcia decided to talk to Baraka’s parents to understand why he was in such low spirits. Miss Garcia invited Baraka’s parents for a cup of tea. “Baraka seems to be struggling to adapt,” she said, her voice filled with concern. “He seems to be quite lonely.”
Baraka’s parents shared their worries. “We moved here for work,” they explained. “We thought it would be an adventure for him, but Baraka feels like he’s lost his friends and his home.” Miss Garcia knew she had to do something special for Baraka. She wanted to give him a gift that would show him he wasn’t alone and that his past was still a part of him.
On Baraka’s birthday Miss Garcia had a surprise for him. “Today, we celebrate not just a birthday, but a journey,” she announced to the class. “We have a special gift for Baraka.” The lights in the classroom dimmed (变暗), and a video began to play.

Baraka sat quietly in his new classroom. He was a boy who had moved from Tanzania to Chicago with his family. His heart was heavy with homesickness.
It was a travel video of Tanzania, the land Baraka missed so much. Baraka’s eyes lit up as he saw the familiar scenes of his homeland.
After the video, Baraka’s classmates approached (走近) him one by one. Each held a postcard with a picture of Tanzania.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 On the back of each card were messages of friendship and welcome. “Baraka, your home is beautiful,” one classmate wrote. “I hope to learn more about it from you.” “Happy birthday, Baraka,” another message read. “Your stories have shown me a world I never knew.” Baraka’s eyes were filled with tears as he read each message. He looked at Miss Garcia and smiled, his heart full of gratitude. “Baraka,” Miss Garcia said, “you are part of our class, and we are part of your journey. We celebrate your roots and your future together.”
From that day on, Baraka started to feel more at home. He began to share stories of Tanzania with his classmates and teach them about his culture. He even started a small Tanzanian culture club after school, where students could learn about Tanzanian music, dance, and traditional games. His smile returned, brighter than ever, as he found a way to blend his past with his present, creating a future filled with promise and friendship. The special gift from Miss Garcia not only celebrated his birthday but also paved the way for Baraka to truly belong.
