If you dream of a world where neighbors share with each other and you don't have to spend money at a store every time you need something, then your local Buy Nothing Group might be the perfect fit. This clever idea began in July 2013, when two friends, Rebecca Rockefeller and Liesl Clark, from. Bainbridge Island, Washington, wanted to try something new. They liked the idea of developing a local gift economy as a way to challenge the consumerist mindset and reconnect neighbors. The Buy Nothing Project has grown rapidly since then, with 6,000 groups now in 44 countries.
The basic idea is that anyone can ask for what they need and anyone can give it. The official rules are simple: “Post anything you'd like to give away, lend, or share among neighbors. Ask for anything you'd like to receive for free or borrow. Keep it legal. No buying or selling, no trades, we're strictly a gift economy.”
All participants have equal standing. Gifts and requests can be large or small, items or services (though they must be legal). Lending and borrowing are allowed, too. Things must be given freely, with no expectation of a gift in return. There are no rules about how to post, though people are encouraged to share personal stories about themselves, their gifts and requests, as this helps to build community.
When asked why the Buy Nothing Project has been met with such enthusiasm, the founders suggest it's because of the human desire to feel connected with others around us. Besides, this is truly a great way to take a stand against over-consumption, to clear out our homes, to save items from landfill and prolong their lifespan (寿命), and to keep valuable resources in the ground. The more sharing and reusing we can do, the better off we'll all be for both climate and human well-being.
24. What has made the Buy Nothing Project grow rapidly
A. The need to build social ties. B. The consumerist mindset.
C. The desire to boost local economy. D. The strong sense of community.
25. Which of the following agrees with the rules
A. Sharing others' stories. B. Asking for a gift in return.
C. Lending or borrowing legal items. D. Trading with the neighbors.
26. What's the advantage of the project
A. It fuels local consumption. B. It reduces the waste of resources.
C. It extends people's lifespan. D. It changes the climate of the earth.
27. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To promote the idea of recycling.
B. To introduce the Buy Nothing Project.

Table tennis may not seem a reasonable option for someone with no arms — but Ibrahim Hamadtou doesn't believe in limits. The 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian breaks the barrier by holding the paddle (球拍) in his mouth and using his right foot to serve the ball.
Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was drawn to table tennis after being challenged by a friend. "I was once watching a match between two of my friends," Hamadtou explains. "They disagreed on a point, When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me, 'Mind your own business as you will never be able to play.' It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis."
It took Hamadtou three years to master the sport. He says the biggest challenge was figuring out the best way to control his body. "I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things, which weren't working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth. It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the paddle with my mouth and making the serve. With practice and playing regularly, this skill was improved."
The Egyptian's incredible talent came to light in 2014 when he was awarded the best Arab Athlete of the year. He won a silver medal at the 2016 African Championships, qualified for his first Paralympics in 2016 at 43, and then again for the 2020 Tokyo Games at 48.
The inspiring athlete says, "The disability is not in arms or legs but to give up in whatever you would like to do."
28. What made Hamadtou take up table tennis
A. His passion for table-tennis. B. His ambition to prove himself.
C. His willingness to inspire others. D. His suffering in a train accident.
29 What was the most difficult for Hamadtou to play table tennis
A. Serving the ball with his mouth. B. Holding the paddle under his arm.
C. Practicing strengthening his muscles. D. Playing the game with the right body parts.
30. What can we learn about Hamadtou from the text
A. He was recognized as a gifted player at 41.
B. He was awarded the best athlete in Africa.

31. What message does the story convey
A. Well begun is half done. B. Love breaks down barriers.

When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn’t cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion (时装)enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria(海狸鼠).
Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur-unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year”, says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.
Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.
Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species(物种).It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us.” says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field.
The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s,the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.
Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it’s not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton’s job these days is trying to promote fur.
Then there’s Righteous Fur and its unusual fashion. Model Paige Morgan says,”To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them-I think that’s going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.” Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She is trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly.
32. What is the purpose of the fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn
A. To promote guilt-free fur.
B. To expand the fashion market.
C. To introduce a new brand.
D. To celebrate a winter holiday.
33. Why are scientists concerned about nutria
A. Nutria damage the ecosystem seriously.
B. Nutria are an endangered species.
C. Nutria hurt local cat-sized animals.
D. Nutria are illegally hunted.

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. "We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,"explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光)in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off"switch"where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)-such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway-a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
36. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. A new study of different plants.
B. A big fall in crime rates.
C. Employees from various workplaces.
D. Benefits from green plants.
37. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer
A. To detect plants’ lack of water
B. To change compositions of plants
C. To make the life of plants longer.
D. To test chemicals in plants.
38. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future
A. They will speed up energy production.
B. They may transmit electricity to the home.
C. They might help reduce energy consumption.
D. They could take the place of power plants.
39. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Can we grow more glowing plants
B. How do we live with glowing plants
C. Could glowing plants replace lamps
D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free

W: Sorry. I should have surveyed our employees for their views.
M: Was it due to not enough time
W: No, I just find it hard to talk with different groups.
M: True, but learning from others’ views is valuable. And please believe in yourself — you will do great! Could you revise it and email it to me by 4:00 p.m.
W: But I have an important meeting this afternoon. Could I send it two hours later
M: OK.

【原文】W: Hey, Mark. What are you reading
M: It’s a book all about mental health. My daughter recommended it. She wrote a school book report on it last week. After reading, I think the biggest change we need to make is to start having open and honest conversations about it.
W: Yes. Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet many people still ignore it. It’s something we should all pay attention to.
M: You’re right. If more people understand that mental health is a normal part of life, they might feel more comfortable talking about it and might seek professional help.
W: Exactly. I sometimes feel burned out due to work-related stress. But I never share it with anyone.
M: That’s terrible. Taking short breaks or doing some simple exercise could help. Most importantly, I think companies should offer support services to allow employees to discuss their mental problems and ask for help.
W: I’ll talk about it to the manager later. It’s exciting to see how the change will influence our work in the future.

34. What does the underlined word “collapsed” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Boomed. B. Became mature. C. Remained stable. D. Crashed.
35. What can we infer about wearing fur in New York according to Morgan
A. It’s formal. B. It’s risky. C. It’s harmful. D. It’s traditional.
