As a child, gardening was something my grandpa and his father could do
together. He explained, “Some kids like to play football with their dads, while I
thought it was more valuable to garden.” He learned a lot about gardening from his
father, including the best variety of tomato-the Porter tomato, which was the only kind
my great-grandfather grew, and is now the only kind my grandpa grows.
Planting these tomatoes always reminds him of his dad and good memories in
the garden together. In the garden that he has spent years perfecting, my grandpa
grows his favorite vegetables both to consume and to share. Everything in the garden
is grown organically. In his eyes, the value of gardening can be found in the physical
exercise, the relaxation and the opportunity to share.
While my dad didn’t quite follow the tradition of enjoying gardening with his
dad when he was a child, he rekindled the flame a little later in life. When my little
sister Elizabeth and I were growing up, he realized that he wanted us to know where
real food comes from and that growing it was something we were capable of doing. In
addition to this important life lesson, my dad explained, “There is something peaceful

and relaxing about working in the dirt and caring for a plant. It is rewarding to grow
something so healthy and wholesome.”
Gardening with my father is something that I enjoy doing. Although I am not
always fond of the work and find it sad when plants die, I have fun when gardening
and enjoy watching plants grow as the fruits of my labor. And as a mom and a role
model for my kids, I plan to teach them this valuable tradition. It’s something
everyone should know, and it brings a sense of joy.
24.Why does the author mention the Porter tomato in paragraph 1
A.To publicize a tasty variety of tomato.
B.To highlight the passing down of a tradition.
C.To show her grandpa’s talent for gardening.
D.To present her family’s love for the vegetable
25.What does the underlined phrase “rekindled the flame” mean in paragraph 3
A.Learned gardening from parents. B.Got back into gardening.
C.Created a new family tradition. D.Reviewed the gardening history.
26.What do the author’s grandpa and dad think about gardening in common
A.It can make people relaxed. B.It can create precious memories
C.It can build up people’s bodies. D. It can develop gratitude for food.
27.What is the author going to do next
A.Cultivate her kids’ habits of gardening.
B.Try to stop plants in the garden from dying.
C.Plant favorite vegetables in the garden.
D.Spend more time gardening with her father.

Cotton bags have become a means for brands, retailers and supermarkets to
convey a planet-friendly mindset — or, at least, to show that the companies are aware
of the overuse of plastic in packaging.
Earth-friendly Not exactly. It turns out the wholehearted embrace of cotton bags
may actually have created a new problem. An organic cotton bag needs to be used
20,000 times to make up for its overall impact of production, according to a 2018
study by the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark. That is equal to daily
use for 54 years — for just one bag. The production of cotton bags is water-intensive,
and figuring out how to deal with a bag in an environmentally low-impact way is not
试卷第 5页,共 12页
{#{QQABDQYUggCIAIJAARgCUwFSCgOYkBEACCgGBEAUMAABQBFABAA=}#}
nearly as simple as people think, according to Travis Wagner, an environmental
science professor at the University of Maine.
In sharp comparison with the frequent use of cotton bags, the disposal (处理) of
the bags remains less satisfying. Only 15 percent of the 30 million tons of cotton bags
produced every year actually is sent to be recycled. Even when a bag does make it to a
treatment facility, most dyes (染料) used to print logos onto them are PVC-based and
thus not recyclable; “they’re extremely difficult to disintegrate (分解 ) chemically,”
said Christopher Stanev, the co-founder of Evrnu, a Seattle-based textile recycling
firm. Printed patterns have to be cut out of the cloth; Mr. Stanev estimates 10 to 15
percent of the cotton Evrnu receives is wasted this way.
That’s not to say cotton is worse than plastic, or that the two should even be
compared. While cotton can use pesticides and has dried up rivers from water
consumption, lightweight plastic bags use greenhouse gas-emitting fossil fuels and
will fill up the oceans.
Buffy Reid, of the knitwear label & Daughter, stopped production of her cotton
bags in April this year. Aesop is converting the composition of its shopping bags to a
60-40 blend of recycled and organic cotton. Designer Ally Capellino recently
employed a new material, while Hindmarch introduced a new version of her original
cotton bag, this time made from recycled water bottles.
In the end, the simplest solution may be the most obvious. “Not every product
needs a bag,” Comey says.
28.According to paragraph 2, what can we learn about cotton bags
A.It is easy to recycle cotton bags.
B.Using cotton bags is earth-friendly.
C.Producing cotton is water-consuming.
D.Producing cotton bags poses no harm to the earth.
29.What do we know about the disposal of cotton bags
A.A large amount of water is wasted.
B.Printed patterns on cotton bags cannot be recycled.
C.Dyes used to print logos are easy to break down.
D.Most cotton bags end up being recycled.
30.What is the author’s opinion of comparing cotton with plastic
A.Cotton is worse than plastic. B.Plastic is worse than cotton.

Three minutes of looking at red light once a week may help our eyesight, new
research suggests. The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy
treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.
Last year, researchers from University College London did a study on red light
therapy (疗法). 24 healthy volunteers, aged between 28 and 72, were asked to look at
red light for three minutes every day for two weeks. Tests later found that the eyesight
of people over the age of 40 improved.
To test the possible weak points of their therapy, they did a new study this year.
Instead of using the light every day, they used it once a week. The new study included
20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red
light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then
tested on their color vision up to a week later.
On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17%
improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in
the afternoon did not have any improvement.
“We’ve found that one single exposure (暴露) to red light in the morning can
greatly improve declining vision,” said lead author Glen Jeffrey.
The findings do support their earlier work, and they might make the treatment
more practicable, since a once-weekly treatment is easier to stick to than a daily one.
But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy
volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.
“In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could
be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could
change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.
Given its low cost (as little as $15) per device, and simplicity, the team is
excited about the future of their therapy.

The Rise of “China-chic”
Over past years, guochao, or “China-chic” has been gaining popularity among
Chinese consumers. Guochao conveys the cultural heritage and values of China.
36 . “China-chic” is rising, but what is it
The idea of guochao was first borrowed from some international brands, and
began to win over Chinese consumers in 2015. 37 In 2018, Chinese sportswear
band Li-Ning presented its Wu Dao (the principles of Taoism) collection at the New
York Fashion Week. It featured bright red color and Chinese characters. More brands
have since followed, heralding (预示) the early period of guochao.
38 . This was a period when applications of big data, cloud computing,
the Internet of Things, and 5G technology hit the market one after another. Domestic
tech companies such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and DJI made headlines.
In its third stage, guochao became more common in everyday life. Over the past
decade, guochao has expanded from consumer goods to experiential products. As
consumers are showing greater interest in cultural identity and creativity, productions
like the TV program National Treasure, and the dance show Night Banquet in Tang
Dynasty Palace combine cultural and historical elements with the latest audio-visual

technologies. 39
Nowadays, guochao is moving to the next stage. No matter how the trend
evolves, Chinese people’s positive attitude toward the country’s development and
their growing confidence in national culture won’t change. 40 Seen from a
broader perspective, guochao mirrors the rise of China, a country eager to make its
presence felt globally. Guochao is a style, but more importantly, it conveys culture
and values.
A. The trend grew in the following years.
B. They give the viewers a totally new experience.
C. The next stage saw the rise of China’s native fashion trends.
D. It also expresses national pride and confidence.
E. The second period of guochao mainly features hi-tech sectors.
F. Its success will rely mostly on gaining cultural confidence.
G. The concept of “Made in China” was recognized as the representation of Chinese
culture.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them
was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their
enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic
bags thrown on the beach. Worse still, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags
would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful
sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend, Maria and Peter brought a big bag
to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead
while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a
day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in
the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost
defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low
spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened ”
Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice, “It’s those annoying
plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.” Understanding the pair’s
disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted, “Well, it’s really
hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.” “Just two of us.” complained
Maria and Peter, looking at each other. Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds,
their eyes shining with excitement. “Yes,that’s the point! We should make more
people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in
chorus.

Possible Version 2
I am truly sorry for the way I acted during our discussion about my course selection. I realize now that raising my voice was hurtful and disrespectful. I was too focused on my own feelings and failed to see that you were only trying to guide me and support my future. I understand now that I should have approached the conversation with more patience and respect.
From now on, I promise to handle disagreements with understanding and listen to your advice carefully. I hope you can forgive my actions. Thank you for always being there for me.
Possible Version 1
Quickly finishing their dinner, the pair went upstairs and started planning. Maria and Peter decided to take advantage of the Internet. “Maybe we can write an article to arouse people's awareness.” Maria proposed. “Good idea! We can also make a video!" Peter added. The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up. More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags. A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure.
[高分句型2]. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean.(由连接词how引导的宾语从句作saying的宾语)
[高分句型3]. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up.(由连接代词what引导的主语从句和that引导的表语从句)
Possible Version 2
Quickly finishing their dinner, the pair went upstairs and started planning. Peter opened his laptop, while Maria fetched a tablet, beginning to brainstorm the best way to get their message across. Eyes sparkling with determination and purpose, they racked their brains and decided to create a documentary-style video, using drone footage and images to showcase the consequence of plastic pollution. Besides, they outlined an informative article illustrating the impact of plastic on marine life, combining sound statistics and expert opinions to support their argument. Later that night, the pair spent hours researching, writing, and filming, their fingers flying across the keyboard. As Maria spoke on camera, her voice trembled with concern, hoping their efforts would arouse people’s awareness. Having edited their video and article, they high-fived with sleepy eyes.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. When they woke up the next day, their hearts raced rapidly as they checked the public’s response. Seeing the rising number of views, shares, and comments, hardly could they contain their excitement, knowing their message struck a chord with the community. Some admitted they had been ignorant of the severity of the issue, while others related their own experiences with plastic pollution. Impressed by the Maria and Peter’s video and article, the local community group buzzed with plans for group cleanups, recycling initiatives, and plastic reduction challenges. Hearts swelling with gratitude and fulfillment, the pair exchanged a grin, aware that their compassion and devotion sparked a wave of change to their beloved sea, eagerly anticipating their return.
