THE FRESHMAN CHALLENGE
Hi! My name is Adam and I’m a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing.
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones: maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it.
I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn’t play well enough. Obviously, I was unhappy, but I won’t quit. I'll find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
I know I’ll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more, I’m a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course, and it’ll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I’m happy to be here. Studying hard isn’t always fun, but I’ll be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.
4. What can we learn about Adam according to paragraph 1
A. He can’t get on well with his lessons.
B. He will graduate from senior high school.
C. He has started his senior high school life.
D. He thinks junior high school life is the same as senior high school life.
5. Why did Adam’s adviser recommend him to choose advanced literature
A. It is useful in the future. B. Adam’s mother language is English.
C. Adam prefers it to any other courses. D. Adam has a good knowledge of English.
6. What did Adam do after failing to join the school football team
A. He felt very happy and joined another club.
B. He quit the dream and became a volunteer.
C. He made up his mind to make the team next year.
D. He didn’t join any extra-curricular activities any more.
7. What makes Adam feel a little worried
A. His preparations for university. B. Being unable to follow the teachers.
C. Studying hard at senior high school. D. Falling behind in his advanced course.
C
If you’ve ever watched a dog sleep, you’ve probably wondered if animals dream. It’s a difficult question. We still don’t know exactly why humans dream, or why dreams might be important. Studying animal dreams is even harder.
Animal dreams might be very interesting. “I think dreaming gives us a way to relate many human cognitive abilities to animals, such as emotion, memory, and even imagination,” says David M. Pena-Guzman, who recently wrote When Animals Dream: The Hidden World of Animal Consciousness.
We know monkeys have emotions, but consider spiders, which a recent study suggests may experience REM-like (类似快速眼动的) sleep, a period of sleep during which the brain is active and vivid dreams are likely to occur. The thought of spider dreams sounds outlandish, but it may be true. “We have this idea of dreams being an imaginary process with something crazy in it,” says Matthew Wilson, a neurobiologist at MIT. “But when we look into animal models, we’re simply trying to understand what goes on during sleep that might influence learning, memory, and behavior.”
Cats were some of the first animals studied in dream research. Michel Jouvet, a pioneer of sleep studies, proved that cats dreamed in the 1960s. In REM sleep, human muscles don’t move much despite the brain activity that powers our dreams. The body doesn’t act out our dreams no matter how real they seem. Jouvet learned that, in cats, a part of the brain called the pons (脑桥) seemed to control REM sleep and produce partial paralysis (麻痹:瘫痪). By removing parts of the pons, Jouvet found with their brains deep in REM sleep the cats began to move as if awake, hunting, jumping and fighting against unseen dangers. This provided a window into what was happening in the cats’ sleeping brains.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if actual dreams were found in animals, and I think finally we’ll be able to show that scientifically,” Stanford neurobiologist Philippe Mourrain says. “We’re not the only species able to remember and learn.”
8. What is the point of studying animal dreams
A. To improve animals’ sleeping quality.
B. To learn about animals’ cognitive abilities.
C. To find a scientific way to raise animals.
D. To help explore the workings of humans’ dreams.
9. What does the underlined word “outlandish” mean in paragraph 3
A. Strange. B. Interesting. C. Misguided. D. Reasonable.
10. What can we learn from Michel Jouvet’s research on cats’ dreaming
A. Cats dream in a way different from humans.
B. Dreams have very little to do with cats’ behavior.
C. It’s the pons that keeps cats still in REM sleep.
D. Cats are more active in sleep than when they’re awake.
11. What does Philippe Mourrain think of animal dreams
A. They are more confusing than people think.
B. They will be proved by further research.
C. The present research is still far from satisfactory.
D. There is a long way to go before they’re understood.
D
Nobody laughed when the UK comedy show Little Britain toured the US. Americans didn’t find the “British stereotypes (刻板印象)” funny. One character was a woman who was sick whenever she saw a foreigner. Another was a loud and rude 15-year-old girl shouting at her teachers. But back home, British people were laughing, thinking, “Yes! That’s exactly what we’re like!”
A laugh is a laugh in any language, but the reasons for it can be very different. Britons and Americans speak the same language, but humor does not always translate.
Take The Office as an example. This was originally a UK TV series but it was changed for the US. Both the US and UK series are set in a boring workplace in a boring district. But David Brent, the boss of the UK Office, is not a nice guy like Michael Scott in the US version. “We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy,” wrote series creator Ricky Gervais. “He couldn’t be too mean.”
Gervais said British people are different from Americans because “Britons cruelly make fun of people we like or dislike... and of ourselves”. He believes the differences between the American and British senses of humor are because of “our upbringing”.
“Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States,” he wrote. “Britons are told, ‘It won’t happen for you’.”
Things usually turn out fine at the end of every US Office episode (集). But in David Brent’s Office and in lots of UK comedies — the last scene is often depressing. You are often left with the feeling that things just couldn’t get worse. For British people, this seems true to life and so much funnier.
It’s not just Britain and the US that have comic differences. Few foreigners would understand a Chinese cross-talk show, for example.
Cultural differences are no laughing matter. But comic differences can definitely be a window into a culture.
12. Why didn’t Americans find Little Britain funny
A. Because British humor is not funny at all.
B. Because Britain and America have different stereotypes.
C. Because the characters are not famous in the US.
D. Because cultural barrier stops Americans fully understanding it.
13. Which statement describes the TV series The Office
A. The UK version was more successful than the US version.
B. The US version changed the boss character to be more likable.
C. The show was adapted to suit the UK audience.
D. Michael Scott is as mean as David Brent in the show.
14. What can we infer from the text
A. Britons do not like to make fun of others.
B. British comedy often has a funnier message.
C. American people are brought up to be president.
D. British humor includes sad or realistic endings.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. How Culture Shapes Comedy Shows.
B. How Comedy Shows Reflect Values.
C. A Comparison Between UK and US Comedy.
D. Understanding Stereotypes Through Comedy Shows.

After I had pictured it over and over again in my mind, the big day finally arrived: my first day at senior high! I woke up early and rushed out of the door in my eagerness to get to know my new school. On the way, the morning breeze brushing my cheeks like a friendly hello, I kept wondering what my new teachers would be like — maybe strict but kind, or funny and easy to talk to
The campus was still quiet when I arrived, so I decided to explore a bit. Anxious and excited, I told myself, “Lee, you will have a good beginning.” Some birds singing, I walked past the gym and stopped to look at the noticeboard. I was looking at the photos on the noticeboard when I heard a voice behind me. “New here ” Turning around suddenly, I crashed straight into someone. Then I heard the sound of a cup hitting the ground, and immediately saw the spilled coffee. Looking up, my face burning, I saw a handsome and young man with brown hair. His clean white shirt now had a dark brown mark, and it was spreading across his chest. “Oh, no!” I yelped. All the excitement about the new day disappeared, replaced by panic (惊慌)。
He quickly pulled out a tissue to wipe up the coffee stain on the floor. “It’s all right,” he said, “accidents happen.” I froze there, forgetting to help, “I... I am terribly sorry. I was just wondering what life is going to be like here.” “Don’t worry,” he gave me a smile. “You’ll soon find out.” He picked up the pieces of the cup and said goodbye to me.
How true his words were! When my head teacher stepped into the classroom, I was surprised to see the same handsome man I had met earlier.
“Good morning, everyone. Before we start, please come to the front one by one and introduce yourself to the class. I’ll go first. My family name is Brown....” Hearing his words, my heart began to beat wildly.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

I tried to turn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start.

Dear Tony,
I understand you’re worried about the Physical Fitness Test, but don’t stress too much! Here’s my advice: start with light exercise like jogging or jumping rope 3–4 times a week. Focus on the test items — like running, sit-ups, or pull-ups — and practice them regularly. Even 20 minutes a day can make a big difference over time. Also, get enough sleep and eat well; your body needs energy to train!
Remember, progress takes time, so be patient with yourself. I’m sure you’ll do great with consistent effort!
Yours,

I tried to turn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start. I should say my name, of course. But what else What could I say to make a good first impression to erase the memory of that coffee stain I was organizing my words in my head when my turn came. With butterflies in my stomach, I dragged my feet to the front. Glancing at Mr Brown’s encouraging smile, I cleared my throat, “Hello, I’m Lee. This morning, I accidentally spilled coffee on our head teacher. Sorry again, Mr Brown.” Instead of a proper self-introduction, I blurted out an apology.
My words made everyone laugh and all eyes turned to Mr Brown’s white shirt. To my surprise, Mr Brown chuckled along with the class. “The coffee stain,” he said, his eyes twinkling, “has become our class’s first shared memory.” His response immediately eased my tension. He continued by comparing the accident to our learning journey, suggesting that sometimes the most imperfect beginning makes the best story, and that we should embrace such unexpected moments in senior high. Sunlight streamed through the window onto his white shirt, and I let out a smile of relief. People say, “Well begun, half done.” I guess this was a good beginning to my new school life.
