Four Places Worth Visiting in Europe
There are some European cities that are extremely popular with tourists. If you’d like to avoid the crowds and noise, there are other cities where you’ll experience great culture and delicious food without quite so many visitors. Here are just a few.
Bath, Britain
About 80 minutes west of London by train, Bath is named for the Roman baths that you can still see there today. Visitors can’t go into the geothermal (地热的) baths anymore because the water isn’t safe. Lovers of artistic writings may also know Bath as the home of the famous English writer Jane Austen — and you can learn more about her in the museum of the town.
Brno, Czech Republic
While millions of people visit Prague, the capital city, every year, the country’s second city —Brno — is smaller and cheaper. You’ll still find beautiful squares, hearty food, and opera culture. There’s also more to see underground — in the city’s network of underground tunnels!
Lucerne, Switzerland
This beautiful Swiss city is known for its long wooden bridge that snakes across the Reuss River in the old town. In winter, people can sit outside under blankets and stay warm, while in summer, people like to swim in the clean waters of Lake Lucerne. There’s also an excellent transport museum!
Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Mostar means “bridge” in Bosnian, and Mostar’s beautiful old bridge is its most famous feature. If you want to go up higher, there’s also a new “skywalk” bridge outside Mostar where you’ll get great views of the town below. Then return to the center to walk on the stone streets and look out for some of the town’s interesting street art.
1. What is the common feature of the four cities
A. Cheap food. B. Opera culture. C. Quiet atmosphere. D. Warm weather.
2. Which city is most likely to attract people who enjoy British literature
A. Bath. B. Brno. C. Lucerne. D. Mostar.

In August, deep in the forests of Motuo county in the Xizang autonomous region, a plant unlike any seen before was found growing in a crack between mountain rocks. With its delicate white flowers and a structure never previously documented, the species — later confirmed as a new genus (属) named Paramicrotoena X. X. Wu &. Qiang Wang — marked a breakthrough in Himalayan biodiversity studies.
The discovery was made by Wu Xuexue, a PhD candidate at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and one of a growing number of young scientists conducting frontline studies in Xizang.
Xizang has now become a center of ecological research. With the support of national biodiversity protection strategies — including the establishment of 47 nature reserves and the founding of its first gene bank — the region offers fertile ground for scientific exploration. Wu’s journey into the mountains of Xizang began with the Flora of the Pan-Himalaya project, an international botanical initiative led by her instructor, Wang Qiang, a senior plant expert. “Every plant in Xizang tells a story of survival,” Wu said. “Through research, I wanted to understand how they adapt to such a severe environment — and how we can protect them.”
Her discovery of Paramicrotoena X. X. Wu &. Qiang Wang was no mere luck. Wu and her team went through thick undergrowth near Beibeng Mountain, where fog rolled in from the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. At around 800 meters above sea level, she spotted several small labiates in a narrow wet rock crack. The flowers seemed ordinary, almost unremarkable. But Wu’s inner voice told her otherwise. That evening, she photographed the flowers’ key features and sent the images to Wang. “The moment I saw them, I knew this was extraordinary,” Wang recalled.
Wu and her team represent a new generation of scientists devoted to uncovering Xizang’s natural wealth. “Their work is more than academic — it strengthens China’s role in global biodiversity conservation and inspires young people to shoulder responsibility for the nation’s ecological future,” Wang said.
4. Which word best describes the discovery of the new species
A. Predictable. B. Unconfirmed. C. Exceptional. D. Controversial.
5. What did Wu mainly express about studying the plants in paragraph 3
A. Its origin. B. Its purpose. C. Its difficulty. D. Its strategy.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the newfound plant
A. Its physical features. B. Its research background.
C. Its living environment. D. Its identification process.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Survival Stories of Himalayan Plants
B. Scientific Training in Botanical Research
C. China Is Devoted to Environmental Conservation
D. A Young Scientist Discovers a New Genus in Xizang
C
As more and more people use AI to help with their work, we still aren’t sure about the effect it has on learning.
To look into this, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology asked 54 people aged 18 to 39 to write three 20-minute essays. One group wrote all three essays with the help of a popular AI chatbot (聊天机器人). Another one used only the Internet for help, with AI responses deactivated. And the third one used no external sources at all. The essays were on moral or philosophical topics, like whether we need to help others in order to be truly happy, or whether books and movies can truly change people’s lives.
Participants in the study wore headsets that recorded their brains’ electrical activity while they wrote. Those using the AI chatbot showed the lowest levels of brain connectivity in their brains, while those using only the Internet had greater brain connectivity. Those using no external sources had the most connectivity. After they had finished, the AI chatbot group was also the least able to quote sentences from their essays.
Eighteen participants were later called back to rewrite one of their essays. This time the groups were switched — those who had used the AI chatbot before now had to write with no external sources, and those who had previously used no external sources now could use the AI chatbot. It was found that all participants from the no-external-sources group could remember all the topics they had written about before. But only three of those who had used the AI chatbot could remember all of their topics. And those who had used the AI chatbot before still showed weaker brain connectivity even when they were writing without using any external sources.
The study has not been reviewed by peers. However, the researchers decided their work should be published without any delay because of how important the findings may be for education — even as AI proves to be powerful aids in learning, they felt the results should be seen as soon as possible.
8. How was the study carried out
A. Through random questions. B. Through individual interviews.
C. Through external observation. D. Through group comparison.
9. What was the focus of the research on the participants
A. Their preferred essays. B. Their brain activity differences.
C. Their movie filming ability. D. Their educational background.
10. What effect did the AI chatbot have on the participants according to paragraph 4
A. It might weaken their recall. B. It might improve their memory.
C. It might delete their external sources. D. It might strengthen their brain connectivity.
11. What is the researchers’ attitude to releasing the study
A. Modest. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Opposed.
D
New research shows that centuries of breeding (饲养) dogs to meet human appearance expectations has left them less able to communicate through facial expressions than their wolf ancestors.
Dogs with noticeable body characteristics, such as floppy (耷拉的) ears and short flat faces, did the poorest at expressing themselves using only their faces, according to a study in Scientific Reports. Long hair and clear hanging lips also hid dogs’ expressions. “In general, the less a dog’s face looks like a wolf’s, the weaker its ability to show feelings,” says lead author Elana R. Hobkirk, a dog behavior expert.
To measure how well a dog’s face shows the animal’s feelings, Hobkirk recorded the small facial movements of wolves kept in enclosures and rescue dogs in shelters as they reacted to different situations. For example, when a high sound was made with no toy in sight, it caused interest. By studying recordings of the animals’ responses, Hobkirk recognized some feelings, like worry, interest, joy, and surprise, and then checked how well they could be recognized based only on facial movement information, precluding sounds and body language.
The researchers found that facial movements showed pet dogs’ feelings about two-thirds of the time. Their method had trouble, however, with dogs that looked less like wolves, which made up almost all of the wrong guesses. Wolves’ expressions were correctly understood three out of four times. Pet dogs’ looks can stop them from showing signals with their ears and limit how much they can show their teeth. Fear was most often mistaken for other feelings, especially joy—something especially important for people who don’t know dogs well. “If you misread a dog’s face when approaching it, you could get bitten,” Hobkirk says.
We still don’t fully understand how dogs may use those expressions in ways that are not the same as those of wolves. The study points out that dogs with limited facial expression seem to make up for it by using other ways to communicate, such as making sounds to share feelings, suggesting the ultimate goal of enhancing friendly interactions between people and dogs.
12. What does human breeding mean to dogs according to Hobkirk
A. Weakening their ability to look. B. Limiting their facial expressions.
C. Contributing to their wolf-like features. D. Improving their capacity to show feelings.
13. What does the underlined word “precluding” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Calling for. B. Summing up. C. Ruling out. D. Appealing to.
14. What can we infer from the research findings in paragraph 4
A. It is easier to read emotions on wolf-like dogs. B. Fear is the easiest emotion to identify in dogs.
C. Dogs express feelings more clearly than wolves. D. Misreading dogs’ expressions is generally harmless.
15. What is the final purpose of the study
A. To promote human-dog harmony. B. To facilitate understanding of dogs’ sounds.
C. To improve dogs’ ability to use body language. D. To enhance interactions between dogs and wolves.

During my winter break, as a newly independent adult eager to prove my self-reliance, I took a part-time job at a convenience store in the city center to save money for college. One particularly cold afternoon, a young foreign tourist caught my attention. He stood before the instant noodle shelf, holding a packet of noodles while comparing it to something on his phone. His confused expression and the way he kept glancing (扫视) around made my routine offer of help turn into genuine concern.
“Excuse me sir, may I help you with something ” I asked gently. He looked up, and immediate relief appeared on his face. He explained in strange and unfamiliar Chinese that he was traveling here and had been eager to taste authentic Chinese cuisine. “I’ve been wanting to try real Chinese food, and I see these everywhere, but how to choose ” he said with an embarrassed smile, pointing to the instant noodles. I suddenly understood. It was about more than noodles; it was a traveler’s genuine desire to experience the local culture.
So, I warmly recommended the most popular local brand and guided him to the hot water dispenser (饮水机). I demonstrated each step patiently while he recorded the process on his phone. When the noodles were ready minutes later, his delighted expression gave me a sense of purpose that went far beyond ordinary store duties. When it was time to leave, he introduced himself as Frank, sharing that he was a photographer from England exploring the city with his camera.
That evening, I video-called my parents and shared this meaningful encounter. We agreed that helping others discover our culture was wonderful, and they even suggested, “If he’s still around, invite him for a real home-cooked meal!”

A. Modest. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Opposed.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B

【答案】One possible version:
Unexpectedly, Frank continued visiting the store during his week-long stay. Each day, he would stop by after exploring a new part of the city, always with a cheerful greeting and a story to share. True to my parents’ suggestion, I finally invited him to our home for dinner on his last evening in town. My mother prepared her signature dishes — braised pork, stir-fried greens, and steamed dumplings — and Frank ate with wide-eyed delight, snapping photos between bites. We talked about life in England, my dreams for college, and how small acts of kindness can bridge cultures. By the end of the night, he felt more like a friend than a stranger.
When spring arrived, an email appeared with the subject “Thank you from England.” I opened it to find a photo attached: Frank standing in front of our convenience store, holding a packet of the same noodles we’d shared, smiling warmly. In his message, he wrote that his experience in our city had become the highlight of his journey, not because of famous landmarks, but because of the people who welcomed him. He thanked me for turning a simple meal into a memory he would carry forever. Reading his words, I realized that cultural exchange often begins not in grand settings, but in quiet moments of human connection.
