①I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo, Paris for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs that have ever been born here. Q24 Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.
②I've got two children—the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving - but all of us really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there was absolutely no risk.
③As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, Q25 but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.
④Q26 Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
⑤ Q27 When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
⑥I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them.
Task 1: Reading for structure
1. What’s the main idea of the passage
This passage describes the author's experience of raising tiger cubs at home to ensure their survival, highlighting the challenges of intensive care and the emotional bond formed, ultimately leading to their return to the zoo.
2. Complete the structure of the passage.
Experience of raising tiger cubs at home Part 1 (para 1) Introducing the Event Background & Cause: · Author (zoo keeper) cares for 1. first Sumatran tiger cubs (Spot & Stripe). · Global low cub survival rate (1/3 die before adulthood) → Provides [round-the-clock care] at home.
Part 2 (para 2-4) Narrating the Event Development & Challenges · Family excited; cubs 2. too small (2.5kg) to pose risks. Conflict · Cubs become 3. mobile → Free movement by day, confined at night to prevent [mischief] (e.g., room destruction). Difficulty · 4. High energy required → Family teamwork (making "tiger milk," cleaning); author felt [extremely tired].
Part 3 (para 5-6) Resolution & Reflection Solution & Outcome · Cubs learn to 5. open doors/jump fences at 4 months → Must [return to zoo]. · Temporary 6. family sadness → Author cherishes memories while staying [hands-on] at zoo.
Task 2: Practice based on the reading strategies
1. Choose the best answer to each question and mark the clues in the passage.
24. Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home
A. To ensure their survival. B. To observe their differences.
C. To teach them life skills. D. To let them play with his kids.
25. What do the underlined words “get up to mischief” mean in paragraph 3
A. Behave badly. B. Lose their way. C. Sleep soundly. D. Miss their mom.
26. What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home
A. Boring. B. Tiring. C. Costly. D. Risky.
27. Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo
A. They frightened the children. B. They became difficult to contain.
C. They annoyed the neighbours. D. They started fighting each other.
答案:AABB
2. Locate and underline the key sentence(s) in the passage for each question's correct choice and highlight the keywords.
3. Match the following skills with the correct choice for each question.
Task 3: Reading for Language features
1. Write the Chinese meanings of the underlined words in the sentences.
(1) Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.
(2) I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them.
2. Analyze and translate the following sentences.
(1) Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.(Para 1)
前半句中 Globally是地点状语,a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos是主语,don't make it to adulthood是谓语部分;后半句中I是主语,decided是谓语,to give them round-the-clock care at home是不定式作宾语。
(2) As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief.(Para 3)

① Q24 When Martin Roth started as a forest ranger in the 1980s, his job was to care for the forest to ensure continuity for decades, even centuries. Now, with climate change, it's more about planning for an uncertain future. "It’s disaster management," says Roth, for whom the 3,000 acres of forest serve as testing ground for high-tech solutions, earning him the nickname "digital forest ranger."
②After a severe storm, the clock starts ticking: Damaged trees should be removed before the arrival of bark beetles, which grow in dead trees and can destroy entire forests. While it once took Roth about 2.5 hours to cover an acre on foot, Q25 drones (无人机) now let him survey the entire 3,000 acres in several days, so he can quickly locate damaged trees, inform owners of affected plots, and send updates to workers.
③Roth's exploration goes beyond drones. His recent project is combining body camera with AI. "Usually you mark the trees, they're cut down, and you have no idea how much wood you'll get, what quality, and which species," he explains. AI now "sees" through his body cam, recognizes tree species, estimates wood production, and sends real-time information to his phone.
④ has also begun experimenting with new species, planting them in small groups and keeping track of them in his system. Q26 As forest areas expand, interventions are needed, but there aren't enough employees to keep it all straight. "Either I know it, or the computer knows it, or no one knows it and it's lost," he says.
⑤Roth's expertise in tackling the challenges of modern forestry with technology is increasingly sought after—colleagues reach out for advice, and he lectures on the topic at universities. Q27 But he warns that technology can never replace a wander through the forest: "I should never believe that the digital twin is reality. I always have to do a reality check."
Task 1: Reading for structure
1. What’s the main idea of the passage
This passage describes Martin Roth's transition from traditional forestry to technology-driven forest management in response to climate change challenges. It highlights his use of drones and AI for rapid damage assessment and species tracking, while emphasizing that technology should complement rather than replace on-ground forest monitoring.
2. Read the passage and figure out the structure.
Technology-driven forest management Part 1 (para 1) Background & Cause Roth's role evolution ·1980s: Focus on long-term 1. forest continuity ·Present: Disaster management due to 2. climate change; dubbed "digital forest ranger"
Part 2 (para 2-4) (Technology Applications & 3.___________ Technology Solutions ·Drones: Survey 3,000 acres rapidly post-storm to locate damaged trees and prevent 4. bark beetle outbreaks. ·AI body cameras: Identify tree species, estimate wood production, and send real-time data. Climate Adaptation ·Experiment with 5. heat-resistant tree species (50% European species unsuited to rising temperatures) . Limitations ·Human expertise gap: "Either I know it, or the computer knows it, or no one knows"
Part 3 (para 5) Reflection & Warning Technology's Role ·Roth's expertise is sought for 6. modern forestry lectures, but he insists on reality checks: "Never believe the digital twin is reality"
Task 2: Practice based on the reading strategies
1. Choose the best answer to each question and mark the clues in the passage.
24. What was Roth's job when he started his career
A. Sustaining forest health. B. Predicting the forest's future.
C. Managing disasters. D. Seeking high-tech solutions.
25. What does Roth use drones to do
A. Identify dead tree species. B. Remove harmful insects.
C. Collect data of forest damage. D. Inform owners of their loss.
26. What point is Roth trying to make with his words in paragraph 4
A. Forests are a cure for climate change.
B. Experienced workers are in great need.
C. Forest expansion is successfully controlled.
D. Technology is key to tracking forest information.
27. Why does Roth warn about the use of technology in forestry
A. It may replace human workers. B. It may need too much checking.
C. It may provide false information. D. It may deny chances of forest walks.
答案:ACDC
2. Locate and underline the key sentence(s) in the passage for each question's correct choice and highlight the keywords.
3. Match the following skills with the correct choice for each question.
Task 3: Reading for Language features
1. Write the Chinese meanings of the underlined words in the sentences.
(1) “It’s disaster management,” says Roth, for whom the 3,000 acres of forest serve as testing ground for high-tech solutions, earning him the nickname “digital forest ranger.”
(2) AI now “sees” through his body cam, recognizes tree species, estimates wood production, and sends real-time information to his phone.
2. Analyze and translate the following sentences.
(1) When Martin Roth started as a forest ranger in the 1980s, his job was to care for the forest to ensure continuity for decades, even centuries.(Para 1)
“When Martin Roth started as a forest ranger in the 1980s” 是 when 引导的时间状语从句;主句中 “his job” 是主语,“was” 是系动词,“to care for the forest... even centuries” 是不定式短语作表语,其中 “to ensure continuity” 是目的状语。
(2) While it once took Roth about 2.5 hours to cover an acre on foot, drones now let him survey the entire 3,000 acres in several days…(Para 2)
从句里“it” 是形式主语,真正的主语是不定式短语 “to cover an acre on foot”;“took” 是谓语,“Roth” 是间接宾语,“about 2.5 hours” 是直接宾语,“once” 为时间状语。主句里“drones” 是主语,“let” 是谓语,“him” 是宾语,“survey the entire 3,000 acres in several days” 是省略 to 的不定式短语作宾语补足语,“now” 和 “in several days” 为时间状语。
①Heidi Tait, co-founder of Tangaroa Blue, an organization committed to beach cleaning, was puzzled when she and her teammates started finding strange tire-shaped capsules washed ashore along the Cape York coast, near Australia's northeastern tip. But Tait eventually connected with Satlink—a Spanish satellite communications company. Q28 Satlink's GPS-enabled buoys (浮标), the ones the beach cleaners kept finding, help commercial fishers track their nets, lines etc. Tait had a brainwave that would see the buoys not just recycled but reused.
②For more than a decade, boat crews working farther west, in Australia's Gulf of Carpentaria, Q29 had been telling Tait about how abandoned fishing nets were circling the gulf, hurting sea creatures. These so-called ghost (幽灵) nets had either broken free from commercial fishing boats and gotten lost, or were cut loose by fishers after getting caught on rocks. Weighing a few tonnes each, the nets that boat crews had chanced upon in the gulf were often too big for them to pull out of the water. They'd typically report the finds to the authorities, but by the time anyone with an appropriately equipped boat could head out to get one, the mass of messy rope had often gone from sight.
③However, once one of the GPS-enabled buoys is attached, it sends its location every few hours to a website, which lets Tangaroa Blue monitor the nets' movements and warns the organization of danger. So far, the reused GPS trackers have helped Tangaroa Blue recover three ghost nets from Australian waters.
④Tangaroa Blue's idea to track ghost nets isn't entirely new; researchers with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia's national science agency, suggested it a decade ago. Taking the idea on board, the authorities tried using battery-powered trackers to monitor a few ghost nets. Q30 Tangaroa Blue's approach differs in that its recycled buoys are solar powered and require less upkeep.
Task 1: Reading for structure
1. What’s the main idea of the passage
This passage explains how Heidi Tait and Tangaroa Blue creatively reused GPS buoys to track and recover ghost nets in Australian waters, highlighting a sustainable approach that improves upon earlier methods by using solar-powered devices with lower maintenance needs.
2. Read the passage and figure out the structure.
Reused GPS buoys Part 1 (para 1) Background & Discovery Initial Puzzle ·Heidi Tait finds 1. tire-shaped capsules (GPS buoys) on Cape York coast. Connection & Insight ·Learns they are from Satlink for 2. tracking fishing gear; has idea to reuse them for ghost net tracking.
Part 2 (para 2) Problem Context Ghost Net Crisis ·3. Abandoned nets in Gulf of Carpentaria harm marine life. ·Nets often too large to remove; reports lead to delays and lost nets.
Part 3 (para 3-4) 4.Solution & Innovation Tracking System ·Attached buoys send locations regularly to a website, enabling 5. monitoring and recovery. Success & Differentiation ·Three nets recovered so far . ·Approach uses solar-powered buoys, requiring less upkeep than 6. earlier battery-powered trackers.
Task 2: Practice based on the reading strategies
1. Choose the best answer to each question and mark the clues in the passage.
28. What were the tire-shaped capsules originally used for

2. Analyze and translate the following sentences.
(1) Heidi Tait, co-founder of Tangaroa Blue, an organization committed to beach cleaning, was puzzled when she and her teammates started finding strange tire-shaped capsules washed ashore along the Cape York coast, near Australia's northeastern tip.(Para 1)
主句主语为 “Heidi Tait”,后接两个同位语 “co-founder of Tangaroa Blue” 和 “an organization committed to beach cleaning” 补充说明身份;“was puzzled” 是谓语;“when” 引导时间状语从句,从句中 “finding strange tire-shaped capsules washed ashore” 为 “find + 宾语 + 过去分词作宾补” 结构,“along the Cape York coast... tip” 为地点状语。
(2) However, once one of the GPS-enabled buoys is attached, it sends its location every few hours to a website, which lets Tangaroa Blue monitor the nets' movements and warns the organization of danger.(Para 3)
“once one of the GPS-enabled buoys is attached” 是 “once” 引导的条件状语从句;主句为 “it sends its location... to a website”;“which” 引导非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词 “website”,从句中 “lets” 和 “warns” 为并列谓语,分别接 “monitor the nets' movements” 和 “warns the organization of danger” 作宾语补足语 / 宾语。

I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
⑤When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
⑥I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them.

①When Martin Roth started as a forest ranger in the 1980s, his job was to care for the forest to ensure continuity for decades, even centuries.
While it once took Roth about 2.5 hours to cover an acre on foot, drones (无人机) now let him survey the entire 3,000 acres in several days, so he can quickly locate damaged trees, inform owners of affected plots, and send updates to workers.
④ Roth has also begun experimenting with new species, planting them in small groups and keeping track of them in his system. As forest areas expand, interventions are needed, but there aren't enough employees to keep it all straight. "Either I know it, or the computer knows it, or no one knows it and it's lost," he says.
⑤Roth's expertise in tackling the challenges of modern forestry with technology is increasingly sought after—colleagues reach out for advice, and he lectures on the topic at universities. But he warns that technology can never replace a wander through the forest: "I should never believe that the digital twin is reality. I always have to do a reality check."

Satlink's GPS-enabled buoys (浮标), the ones the beach cleaners kept finding, help commercial fishers track their nets, lines etc. Tait had a brainwave that would see the buoys not just recycled but reused.
②For more than a decade, boat crews working farther west, in Australia's Gulf of Carpentaria, had been telling Tait about how abandoned fishing nets were circling the gulf, hurting sea creatures.
Tangaroa Blue's approach differs in that its recycled buoys are solar powered and require less upkeep.
