It was 3 a.m. when my phone buzzed (嗡嗡声) repeatedly, disturbing my baby who had just fallen asleep after an hour of rocking. It was a WhatsApp message from a mom friend. The screen lit up with a flood of messages — fellow moms discussing sleeping training, arranging playdates, and sharing Instagram posts about motherhood. Their cheerful “We can do this, mamas!” only increased my tiredness. The blue light from my phone screen left me wide awake with a racing heart.
It’s in this moment that I made my change, sliding my finger down from the top right-hand corner of my phone to access the control centre, hitting wildly at the little moon pattern that stops notifications (通知) in their tracks, and hanging up my virtual door sign: Do Not Disturb.
That was three years ago. Since then, I’ve seldom turned notifications back on, except when waiting for important calls. I do not want to be disturbed; nor, actually, do I want my phone to demand as much of my attention as my now toddler (学步儿童) or his new baby brother does. Sure, I’m not easily reachable, which upsets my partner, but I’m calmer not being always there for the world and those WhatsApp-mad moms.
I still work on my self-control to avoid checking my phone all the time for fear of missing out. The pull of unread messages is strong, but in general, the benefit to my mental health, sleep, and parenting is obvious. My phone is still a big part of my life, but it no longer disturbs my daily life as much as before.
I believe this change has made me a better and more caring mother. There are, after all, few things that seek quite as much attention as toddlers and WhatsApp groups. Given the choice, I’d rather focus on my three-year-old trying to climb curtains, put the dog in the washing machine, or feed his baby brother a stick of chalk than on a phone buzzing with notifications pretending to be urgent.
4 What made the author turn on “Do Not Disturb” three years ago
A. Nonstop late-night messages. B. Complaints about phone overuse.
C. Pointless mom-group chats. D. Failures in baby sleeping training.
5. Why does the author mention her children in paragraph 3
A. To show her busy schedules.
B. To describe her family affairs.
C. To explain her turning off notifications.
D. To compare her children’s attention needs.
6. What is the author’s current phone usage like
A. She maintains strict control over notifications.
B. She checks messages continuously for updates.
C. She feels pressured to respond to every group message.
D. She finds it impossible to balance phone use with parenting.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article
A. To share her phone-habit change.
B. To solve problems in socializing.
C. To warn against smartphone overuse.
D. To discuss digital-age parenting struggles.
C
Some foods are highly processed or ultra-processed. Ultra-processed foods (UPF) have become increasingly popular and range from chips to microwave meals and even bread. Even just a casual glance at supermarket shelves reveals a collection of UPF offerings in delicate and attractive packaging. Besides their affordability, UPF not only offer time-saving convenience, but also momentary satisfaction filled with fat, sugar, salt and additives. After all, who can resist enjoying a tasty snack when lost in a football game or an exciting new TV series
Although much is discussed about the direct negative impact of these products on our health, including obesity, heart diseases and diabetes, little has been said about the impacts of UPF on the environment. The most serious environmental impacts of UPF-rich diets mainly come from the post-farm stages, especially from the final product creation and packaging processes.
One specific additive that has the most environmental impact is palm oil. Palm oil is responsible for deforestation of some of the world’s big forests, which have diverse animals and plants. It is one of the world’s most consumed vegetable oils that can be found in half of our food. The massive waste generated by over-packaged UPF is another factor to consider. Their plastic packaging doesn't degrade in landfills or in nature and has a dramatic impact on soil health and life in the sea. One recent study published in Nature Sustainability demonstrates that UPF processing and packaging stages have the greatest environmental impacts of the whole system and are a major source of environmental waste worldwide.
The environmental impact of ultra-processed foods cannot be ignored any longer. While producers must take action, it is our growing awareness of what we buy and how it is produced that drives real change. By choosing wisely — whether by rejecting heavily processed options or supporting sustainable brands — we exercise the power to shape a better food system, a responsibility we must embrace.
8. What can be learned about UPF from the first paragraph
A. They are primarily consumed during casual leisure activities.
B. They are carefully produced to be environmentally friendly.
C. They are filled with various kinds of healthy added nutrients.
D. They are favored by many for their fancy packages and flavors.
9. Why palm oil was introduced in the text
A. To compare it with some other vegetable oils.
B. To explain UPF's harmful environmental effects.
C. To show its relationship with animals and plants.
D. To discuss factors of UPF's packaging-related pollution.
10. What does the author think of the role we play in fighting UPF
A. Tiny. B. Essential. C. Replaceable. D. Limited.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. From Shelf to Soil: the Hidden Journey of UPF
B. Fast and Cheap: UPF Take Over Our Daily Diets
C. Beyond the Shelf: UPF Are Harming the Planet
D. Convenience at a Cost: the Health Damage of UPF
D
Language is embedded (嵌入) in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the result if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened Would we be able to think What would our thoughts be like
The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what you mean by “thought”. Can you experience impressions and feelings without language Yes, and very few would argue otherwise. But there is a difference between being able to experience “pain” and possessing the concept “pain”. Most would say true thought involves having the concept.
Many artists and scientists say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The autistic (自闭症的) author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks with images rather than in language, says that concepts for her are collections of images.
Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but that there are people who are deficient in the ability to use language and think in the way she describes.
There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages developed by deaf students without language models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical problem solving.
However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language. Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. The philosopher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a type of inner language thinking that allows us to bring our own thoughts into awareness. We may be able to think without language, but language lets us know we are thinking.
12. What does the author intend to show with the experience of Temple Grandin
A. People without language can’t think.
B. Language has no influence on thinking.
C. Some people may think in a non-language way.
D. Autistic people have a special way of using language.
13. Which of the following best explains “deficient” underlined in paragraph 4
A. Flexible. B. Lacking. C. Confident. D. Experienced.
14. What could we learn from the last paragraph
A. Language makes abstract reasoning easier.
B. Language is merely useful for reflection.
C. Language is a must for people to understand the world.
D. Language restricts people s ability to think visually.
15. The text is written mainly to __________.
A. Stress the importance of language in daily life.
B. Advocate the thinking modes of scientists and artists
C. Demonstrate the cognitive abilities of average individuals.
D. Show the relationship between thought and language.

Fun with English, Shine with Confidence
Last week, our school held an exciting English Week, where students explored the joy of language learning through diverse activities. While the English Song Competition showcased vocal talents, the Drama Festival allowed participants to perform classic plays creatively. What impressed everyone most was the Scrabble Tournament, which combined vocabulary skills with fun competition.
The event received overwhelming praise. As many students admitted, they not only improved their English but also gained confidence. Teachers were delighted to see even shy students actively engaging. Although the week has ended, its impact continues to inspire our campus.
