20-year-old Edgar McGregor decided to visit his local park, Eaton Canyon, day in and day out to pick up as much litter as he could fit in two buckets (提桶). Now, over 589 days and 19,000 Twitter followers later, he is more passionate (热爱的) than ever about his task to save the planet!
Edgar found out that Los Angeles would be the host of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. Knowing the state of the national forest at the time, he feared that its grounds that were full of litter would make the city a “global embarrassment,” so he decided to make cleaning it up his new passion project.
As time went on, he began documenting his progress on Twitter. Soon, he began encouraging others to start park cleanup projects of their own.
As part of southern California’s Angeles National Forest, Eaton Canyon can see quite a bit of daily foot traffic. On one particularly busy day, Edgar spent five hours picking up litter and came away with over 1,000 pounds of rubbish. Rain or shine, Edgar headed over to carry out his task. He worked through conditions like snowstorms, a record heat wave, and even a forest fire on the opposite side of the park.
The more he did, the more treasures he discovered. In addition to a lot of old iPhones and cans, Edgar collected enough recyclables to earn around 30 dollars every few weeks, which he would donate to nonprofits.
Recently, Edgar began noticing that the top-littered areas in his park were becoming few and far between. At one point, he spent four hours moving around the park and only returned with two buckets. Edgar plans to return to Eaton Canyon two or three times a week to keep up with the maintenance, but he is excited to start expanding his reach to new locations. Though he realizes this doesn’t mean his journey is complete, he is excited to have already achieved so much!
4. Why is the 2028 Summer Olympic Games mentioned
A. To describe what made Edgar famous.
B. To explain why Edgar loved Los Angeles.
C. To introduce what inspired Edgar to start his project.
D. To discuss why Edgar started exploring the national forest.
5. Which of the following can best describe Edgar
A. Determined and caring.
B. Creative and influential.
C. Talented and productive.
D. Adventurous and sociable.
6. What is Edgar’s next plan
A. Encouraging others to join in his cleanup.
B. Making a journey to clean Eaton Canyon.
C. Cleaning up other parts of the national forest.
D. Returning to the parks he has already cleaned.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. A hero for the environment. B. A way of dealing with litter.
C. A local development project. D. A huge personal achievement.

Vertical farming, which grows plants indoors using artificial light and AI. promises a climate-friendly way to address food insecurity without the massive land and water footprint. However, recent rising costs and worldwide skyrocketing energy prices have made these farms’ near- constant electricity demand unaffordable. Most vertical farms currently grow only greens such as lettuce and herbs because of their low water consumption and speedy development. Yet, lettuce cannot feed the world.
To truly address food insecurity, vertical farms must expand their offerings, and that means finding a way to introduce pollinators (传粉昆虫), such as bees and bats, into high- tech indoor farming operations. It’s difficult to get the job done because domesticated honeybees, commonly used by commercial growers, have trouble sensing direction under artificial light, and hand pollination is extremely time- intensive and thus expensive.
To solve the problem, researchers have been working on robotic pollinators, which have recently made their way into commercial operations. Polybee, a Singapore- based company founded in 2019, adapts widely available mini drones (无人机) for various types of indoor agriculture operations, including vertical farms. The company’s AI- powered software directs equipped with color camera sensors that measure key features for growers to fly near plants. Then, the drones carefully disturb the air around them to shake flowers when the conditions inside are ideal for pollination. This activity shakes the pollen (花粉) out of the flower and kicks off the process of reproduction.
Recently, Polybee has tried the tomato pollination and claims to have perfected the process. They’re still working on adjusting their products to work with other types of plants, such as strawberries and blueberries. But each plant comes with its own complexities. Certain varieties may require direct contact with robots, perhaps small drones.
Still, even if robotic pollinators save vertical farms from disuse, it’s unlikely that any form of indoor agriculture can fully replace the fields humans have relied on for millennia. “We need to rethink agriculture in the face of climate change and population growth, but vertical farms shouldn’t be looked at as competitive — because they’re not,” says Thomas Graham, a researcher of environment agriculture at the University of Guelph.
8. What can be inferred about vertical farms from paragraph 1
A. They are reducing reliance on energy. B. They struggle to attain the desired goal.
C. They currently grow a wide variety of crops. D. They are greatly impacted by AI technologies.
9. How do Polybee’s mini drones assist indoor agriculture
A. By removing air pollutants. B. By spreading pollen via airflow.
C By detecting diseases in plants. D. By carrying pollinators like bees.
10. What is a current concern with Polybee’s drones
A. Difficulties in adjusting direction. B. Risk of damaging flowers.
C. Challenges in product upgrades. D. Applicability to different plants.
11 What does Thomas Graham think of vertical farming
A. They can coexist with traditional farming. B. They are more productive than outdoor farms.
C. They are losing favor with commercial growers. D. They should be prioritized due to climate change.
D
When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacteria culture he had grown was infected by fungus (霉菌). The fungus killed any bacteria colonies it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and created the new field of antibiotics (抗生素).
That’s how most people see innovation: a flash of brilliance and a “eureka moment” when a new world is born in an instant. The truth, however, is not that simple. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use.
To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards (产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving criticism instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular theory, which suggested that disease resulted from “bad air”. After his death in 1865, germ (病菌) theory was finally accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War II going on fiercely, the War Production Board asked 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
Penicillin owes much of its success to government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other informed officials and big firms that might have the resources to turn their ideas into reality quickly. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius, and the “eureka moment” breaks down.
12. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about
A. Definition of a traditional concept.
B. A description of a lab story.
C. Correction of a common misunderstanding.
D. An analysis of a scientific phenomenon.
13. What is the message conveyed in paragraph 3
A. Great minds think alike.
B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. A stroke of luck paves the way for success.
D. Early work contributes to later breakthroughs.
14. What does the underlined part “ushering in” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Predicting. B. Starting.
C. Delaying. D. Transforming.
15. Which of the following can be the best title
A. Great Innovation: Individuals Are True Heroes
B. From Failure to Success: The Story of Penicillin
C. The lone Genius: Fleming’s Discovery of Penicillin
D. The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens

It was almost 9 pm. Stephen, a 14-year-old boy was wandering alone on the street on a breezy night.
He recalled the incident that made him argue with his mother and he moved out of the house like a storm. His eyes were filled with tears. He had a quarrel with his mother from morning. His mom asked about his low grades in the recent exam. Stephen didn’t care too much about his carelessness and did not reply to her well. She scolded (责备) him again in the evening for being so careless. He quarreled with his mother. The quarrel ended up so badly that Stephen left his home.
He walked for more than hours. He smelled a nice flavor from a shop and was attracted by the sweet smell. He couldn’t resist the smell of that nice flavor and he felt very hungry.
It was a small noodles shop and he stopped by the shop. Suddenly he realized there was not even a single penny in his pocket. Tired and hungry, he stood there for a minute but decided to leave. The shop owner saw him and asked him to have some food.
Stephen said he had no money to pay for the food. The shop owner smiled, saying, “It’s OK. I won’t ask you for any money.”
The shop owner prepared a hot bowl of sweet and delicious noodles. Stephen ate the noodles, feeling that he owed something to the shop owner. He promised to return his favor. Stephen was in tears when he ate the noodles. The shop owner asked what happened to him.
Stephen told him about the incident and the quarrel with his mother and he felt that his mother did not understand him.
Hearing this, the shop owner smiled and approached Stephen. He patted the boy’s shoulder and said, “Hey, young guy, think about how much your mom loves you.” Stephen thought of the moment when he was a little kid. In fact, his mother carried him in her arms.
