Marion Sheppard felt sorry for herself when she began to lose her sight in her 40s. Since childhood, Sheppard have always been a keen dancer. But now she rarely left her Bronx apartment. She was afraid that, unable to see a stranger approaching, she would be knocked down on the streets. In fact, mostly, she worried about the way she would appear to the world. She wondered constantly, “What if people look at me differently, and treat me differently ”
After several months of sadness and fear, Sheppard decided to keep moving. Hard as it was, Sheppard forced herself to go out. She attended a social event for people with visual problems, and was shocked to find that not only did no one dance, but they barely moved. “Oh, no!” she told herself. “That is not the way I want to live!” She bought a walking stick and named it Tyreek, which she had always planned on giving a son if she had one. Sheppard continued to work at her library job at The New York Times until her vision worsened in her 50s.
And she kept moving and dancing. Sheppard was 61 when she attended a summer camp for the blind in 2008, where she taught her first line dancing class.
After that, she asked a Manhattan community center run by Visions if she could teach her class there, but she was told no and that it would be too dangerous for the students. Still, she persisted, and soon convinced the administrators to let her teach line dancing on a volunteer basis. Her classes proved to be so popular that in 2012, Visions hired her as one of their staff. Sheppard was excited.
She was teaching over a dozen students dance steps. But Sheppard instructed her beloved students on far more than that. With constant encouragement, she also managed to make dignity (尊严) and independence take root in them. In her classes, the students could truly be themselves.
4. What was Sheppard most anxious about when she began to lose her sight
A. The loss of her library job.
B The inability to dance anymore.
C. The risk of being knocked down on streets.
D. The image she would project to others.
5. How did Sheppard feel about her walking stick
A. She was often greatly embarrassed by it.
B. She regarded it as a temporary necessity.
C. She treated it simply as an ordinary tool.
D. She considered it special and meaningful.
6. What does the underlined word “persisted” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Gave up easily. B. Waited patiently.
C. Continued trying. D. Felt disappointed
7. Which of the following can best describe Sheppard
A. Shy and quiet. B. Determined and brave.
C. Humorous and patient. D. Intelligent and creative.
C
A smoke bomb from a party started a major blaze (火焰) near Los Angeles in September, just one of many recent wildfires ignited (引燃) by people. Now, an analysis of satellite data shows human-caused blazes spread much faster and kill more trees than ones ignited by lightning.
Fire has always been a part of California’s natural history. But several centuries of human settlement have created new conditions that promote its spread.Studies have shown human ignition is to blame for 84% of all wildfires in the United States, and 97% of all those that threaten homes.
Human-caused fires always seemed more extreme, says Stijn Hantson,a fire ecologist at the University of California,Irvine, who led the new research. But measurements of how fast they spread and their impacts on ecosystems (生态系统) in California had not been explored, he notes.
To examine those differences, Hantson and his colleagues analyzed satellite data for 214 wildfires in California between 2012 and 2018.Human-caused fires typically spread about 1.83 kilometers per day, more than twice as fast as lightning-ignited burns, the team reports. The faster spreading fires also burned more violently and killed “double or triple” the trees as lightning-caused ones.
However, there is no fundamental difference in the chemistry of a human-caused blaze. “A fire is a fire” Hantson says. “It’s the surrounding things that matter.” Causes of fires ranging from improperly thrown cigarettes to sparking (冒火花) power lines could ignite a blaze on any given day, he says, while lightning strikes and dry thunderstorms only happen seasonally.
The researchers tracked meteorological data and found that human-caused fires were more likely to start on days with extreme weather conditions, and were more associated with drier,less-forested landscapes. This adds to scientists’ understanding of how humans are extending the fire season, says Nathan Mietkiewicz, an ecologist with the National Ecological Observation Network.
8. The author uses some data in paragraph 2 to show that ________.
A. wildfires are mostly caused by humans
B. most wildfires threaten people’s homes
C. wildfire is a part of California’s natural history
D. wildfires break out frequently in the United States
9. What’s the purpose of Hantson’s research
A. To prove how extreme human-caused fires are.
B. To find out the causes and solutions of wildfires.
C. To explore the speed and effects of wildfires caused by humans.
D. To examine the differences between a human-caused blaze and a nature-caused one.
10. How is the result presented in paragraph 4
A. By giving examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By analyzing cause and effect.
D. By giving definitions.
11. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Human-caused fires and lightning-caused fires are basically different.
B. Lightning strikes and thunderstorms can always lead to wildfires.
C. Wildfires only happen in dry,less-forested areas.
D. Humans are to blame for the extended fire season.
D
Online marketplaces for goods and services are increasingly valuable and powerful. When it comes to their reputation systems, they typically take the form of five-star ratings. While the systems are good enough at identifying and weeding out very low-quality products or suppliers, they do a poor job of separating good from great products or suppliers.
This may not be a big issue for marketplaces offering basic, mass-market products and services (e. g. Uber or Didi), but it can be a serious problem for marketplaces where it is important to allow truly great providers to differentiate themselves clearly.
In their current application, five-star rating systems suffer from several shortcomings. Lacking motivations for providing truthful feedback, users who have extreme experiences (either very bad or very good) are much more likely to leave feedback than users who have average experiences, thus creating selection biases (偏见). Ratings are also likely to experience “grade” inflation (贬值), so that in some marketplaces having a 4.8-star average, or 96% positive feedback, does not mean that the supplier is particularly exceptional. And on some marketplaces, the difference between 4.5 stars and 4.8 stars could be massive, making it hard for users to differentiate OK suppliers from very good ones.
Several options are available to offer users a more precise sense of suppliers’ relative ranking. A basic thing they could do would be to show users the average score for all suppliers in the relevant category. By seeing the whole distribution and where the supplier fits in it, the user could quickly get a sense of the overall situation. The second key measure advocated is to adjust user ratings for differences in reviewing behavior. Specifically, a given user’s review could be given a larger weight if there is a higher variance in the individual’s reviewer scores (in contrast to someone who always gives the same or similar score).
Although rating systems alone can’t guarantee trust and safety in online marketplaces, applying these measures can make rating systems more reliable and reduce the need for additional services.
12. What role can five-star rating systems play in online marketplaces
A. They can make online platforms look more reliable.
B. They can make excellent providers stand out easily.
C. They can ensure consumers always get the best quality.
D. They can help tell extremely poor products from others.
13. What can be inferred from a hotel’s 4.8-star rating on an online travel site
A. Most guests had great stays. B. It offers incomparable service.
C. The rating may be misleading. D. It’s far better than 4-star hotels.
14. What helps users better understand suppliers’ relative ranking
A. Presenting the exceptional scores of all suppliers.
B. Displaying the total number of reviews for each supplier.
C. Highlighting reviews from the same user with distinct scores.
D. Evaluating reviews from various users with consistent scores.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To contrast rating methods for suppliers. B. To expose the problems of rating systems.
C. To present the advantages of rating systems. D. To suggest improvements for rating systems.

I’ve been studying attention for several years now, and this statement that the quality of your attention determines the quality of your life has become my north star. Here’s why I believe it’s true.
Your attention is a filter (过滤器). Every moment, you’re flooded by information, thoughts, feelings, and impulses (冲动). What you focus on, whether by choice or by force, becomes your reality. The things you attend to register as targets in your brain and shape your behaviour. ____16____
That’s why two people can sit in the same room, experience the same events, yet have completely different days. One notices the annoyances and frustrations and the things going wrong. ____17____ It’s the same external reality, but very different internal experiences.
Concentration really is the foundation of everything meaningful. You can’t read deeply, listen fully, learn effectively, or connect authentically without the ability to direct and maintain your attention.
Most knowledge workers who struggle to be productive think they have time management problems. ____18____ You could have all the time in the world, but if your attention is broken, constantly controlled by notifications and impulses, that time becomes worthless.
____19____ And like any skill, it can be trained. Every time you bring your wandering mind back to the present task, you’re doing a mental exercise. Every time you resist the pull of a distraction, you’re building strength.
In a world where big tech is spending billions upon billions of dollars in tracking and breaking your attention, developing this skill gives you an incredible advantage over others. ____20____ While others are controlled by their impulses, you can choose your focus. When AI is replacing your colleagues, you’re doing important creative work that your boss values and can’t replace.
A. Attention is a skill.
B. Everything else fades into background noise.
C. Your attention is the most valuable resource you have.
D. I think they actually have attention management problems.
E. The other sees opportunities, moments of beauty and reasons to be grateful.
F. While everyone else is drowning in shallow engagement, you can go deep.
G. People who can maintain focus report higher life satisfaction and achievement.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.
Maddy’s daughter Cathy suffered from a condition called spina bifida (脊柱裂). She spent most of her life in a wheelchair, which made even the simplest tasks a tough challenge. One such challenge for Cathy was getting a haircut. As Maddy’s neighbor, I witnessed the daily struggle firsthand and felt the urge to help. A hairstylist myself, I decided to visit Maddy’s home to cut Cathy’s hair. Little did I know this small act would light a spark within me.
Through my visits, I realized that many others in our community had the same problem. Maddy explained the difficulties special groups of people encountered — the loud noises and strong smells in regular hair salons were too much for people with autism (自闭症). Also, just getting into a salon was tough for people in wheelchairs. Her words touched me, and I wondered if there was something more I could do to help.
An idea began to form in my mind — I could open a special salon, a place where people with physical disabilities or psychological problems would feel more comfortable. It wouldn’t just be easy to enter for people in wheelchairs; it would also have floors with different textures (纹理) to help those who can’t see well. To make the place even more comfortable, it would have calm music instead of loud pop songs. Toys and blankets would be on hand to help people stay calm. Hairstylists would use quiet hair dryers and soft voices. They would also learn how to help customers who don’t like others touching their hair. Most importantly, they would treat every customer with the same level of respect.
The only issue was that I didn’t have the funds to make this dream a reality. As a hairstylist, I had limited savings. Maddy suggested, “How about organizing a community bazaar (义卖) in our neighborhood this Saturday to raise funds for the salon ” Her eyes shone with enthusiasm as she continued, “People love supporting good causes, and I’m sure many would join in to help create a place where everyone feels comfortable getting a haircut.” I nodded, recognizing the brilliance in her plan.

1.续写词数应为 150左右;

【答案】Dear Paul,
I’m glad to share my recent experiences participating in environmental protection activities.
Last month, I joined a local volunteer group to clean up a nearby park. We picked up litter, sorted recyclables, and even planted some trees to improve the green space. It was hard, but seeing the park become cleaner was truly rewarding. Additionally, I worked in a community workshop to raise awareness about reducing plastic use and making eco-friendly choices in our daily life.
These activities made me realize how small actions can make a big difference. I will do more in the future. How about your experiences
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
As Saturday approached, something changed in our neighborhood. The familiar streets became lively with colorful stalls, each offering different goods and crafts. The smell of freshly baked bread filled the air, and the sounds of laughter and cheerful chatter echoed along the sidewalks. Neighbors, young and old, flocked to the event, contributing not only as buyers but also as sellers and volunteers. Our community bazaar, once just an idea, had blossomed into a real gathering with a shared purpose. Seeing how successful the event was, I felt excited and grateful. Judging from Maddy’s smile, I knew she shared the same feeling with me.
Paragraph 2:
Even after the end of the community bazaar, our neighbors’ support didn’t stop there. Donations continued to flow in, and several local businesses reached out, offering to sponsor or donate materials for the salon. My heart would swell with joy every time I saw their enthusiastic smiles. After six months, we finally had enough funds to open our hair salon. I invited Cathy to be our first customer. As I watched the scissors cutting through the air, I realized it wasn’t just a haircut for Cathy — it symbolized the sympathy and victory of a community coming together to make a positive difference.
