Four Beautiful Beaches In Singapore
In Singapore, there are a range of special beaches where you can enjoy yourself for a lovely holiday. At these popular beaches, you’ll feel as if you’re in paradise (天堂) —like Bali. Here are four of the best beaches there.
Tanjong Beach
The white-sandy beach is man-made and it’s the perfect place to relax in the sun, read a book away from the crowds, or go for a swim in the ocean. Especially, the Tanjong Beach Club is a top nightlife spot for drinking cocktails and enjoying water sports like surfing.
St. John’s Island Beach
You can enjoy a get-away-from-it-all holiday on St. John’s Island. This pretty place has a beach that’s great for sunbathing, swimming in clear water, and having picnics away from the city. Visitors can also spot unique marine life, go fishing, and even rent cabins or bungalows (平房) to stay on the island. Make sure to bring everything you need — there are no shops on the island.
Coney Island
Coney Island beach is the perfect place to relax away from the crowds. This hidden destination offers a couple of sandy spots to relax — whether you’re walking or cycling around Coney Island. It is definitely one of the best beaches to visit alone for a therapeutic (治愈的) experience.
Pulau Hantu
This island has a quiet beach far from busy tourist spots. The island consists of two small islands that join at low tide. There’s soft white sand and clear blue-green water here, teeming with (充满) colorful corals and marine life. People often camp overnight on the island, as it is only accessible by boat.

Born with a skin condition, Michaela Mabinty DePrince was labeled a “devil child” at her Sierra Leone orphanage (孤儿院), the last to be fed and the first to be beaten. When an issue of Dance Magazine blew into the orphanage yard, with a woman smiling on the cover, she imagined a better life as a ballerina.
Adopted by an American family at age 4, she studied and practiced to make her dream a reality. When she was just 15, she was one of six promising dancers in the documentary First Position. She went on to study with the American Ballet Theater and became a dancer of the Dance Theater of Harlem. At the height of her career, she secured starring roles with the Dutch National Ballet and appearing in the film version of Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
She was born in the war-torn West African country of Sierra Leone. When she was 3, her miner father was killed and her mother died of hunger. At the orphanage, she took to turning around quickly and standing on the tips of her toes, and the DePrinces, the couple who adopted her and brought her back to New Jersey, promised to take her to ballet lessons once she excelled in English. She was quickly discovered to be talented. With her athleticism and what one reviewer called her “spitfire quickness,” DePrince became an international star in Amsterdam. There she took the lead in such ballets as Swan Lake and Coppélia, dancing with “undeniable grace, strength, and precision”.
She had to take a break in 2017 after an accident which gave her time “to seek treatment for years of nightmares (噩梦)” about her wartime childhood. She joined the Boston Ballet in 2021 but left in the same year for undisclosed reasons. “Dance with your heart,” she once told young ballerinas. “Don’t let the negative aspects of life cause you to lose what made you want to achieve in the first place.”
24. Why is a magazine mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To illustrate the cause of her skin condition.
B. To show the unfair treatment at the orphanage.

A honey bee’s life depends on it successfully harvesting from flowers to make honey. Deciding which flower is most likely to offer nectar (花蜜) is incredibly difficult. In new research published recently, our team reports how bees make these complex decisions.
We challenged bees with a field of artificial flowers, each of which offered a tiny drop of sugar syrup. Different-colored “flowers” varied in their likelihood of offering sugar. We put tiny, harmless paint marks on the back of each bee, and filmed every visit a bee made to the flower array. We then used computer vision and machine learning to automatically draw and study the route on which bees flew through. From this information, we found bees very quickly learned to identify the most rewarding flowers. They quickly assessed whether to accept or reject a flower, but surprisingly they made correct decisions within 0.6 seconds while incorrect decisions took them 1.2 seconds on average.
The results and what we expected are poles apart. Usually in animals, an accurate decision takes longer than an inaccurate decision. This is called the speed-accuracy trade off, which happens because determining whether a decision is right or wrong usually depends on how much evidence we have to make that decision. More evidence means a more accurate decision, but gathering evidence takes time. So accurate decisions are usually slow and inaccurate decisions are faster. But bees only accepted a flower if, at a glance, they were sure it was rewarding. If they had any uncertainty, they rejected it. They might have missed some rewarding flowers, but they successfully focused their efforts only on the flowers with the best chance and best evidence of providing them with sugar.
The only other animals known to beat the speed-accuracy tradeoff are humans and primates. It’s indeed amazing that bees seemed to be breaking this boundary.
28. How did researchers get the result of the experiment
A. By observing bees in the wild.
B. By analyzing bees’ flight paths.
C. By testing bees in different colors.
D. By comparing bees’ food preference.
29. What did the research find about bees
A. They could tell artificial flowers immediately.
B. They performed better in certain colored flowers.
C. They made right choices faster than the wrong ones.
D. They made more correct decisions than other species.
30. What does the underlined phrase “poles apart” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Contrary. B. Reasonable.
C. Essential. D. Confusing.
31. Why do bees beat the speed-accuracy tradeoff
A. They ignore uncertainties.
B. They gather evidence very fast.
C. They stay on the right track while flying.
D. They adopt a special decision-making mechanism.

When pop singer Chappell Roan spoke out against the invasive (侵入的) fan behavior she had been experiencing since her sudden rise to popularity earlier this year — tailing, unwanted touching, invasive contact with her friends and family members — she kicked off a major discussion about the relationship between a celebrity and their audience and the downside of so-called parasocial relationships.
A parasocial relationship (PSR) is generally defined as a relationship in which one member of the relationship isn’t aware of the other — e.g. a fan loves a celebrity, but the celebrity doesn’t know they exist. Not only celebrities, PSRs also exist between people and fictional characters, whether played by an actor or not.
A parasocial relationship isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But digital interaction complicates these natural relationships. The conventional arrangement of PSRs, where the fan or follower has no actual contact with a celebrity or creator, gets noticeably disrupted by our new platforms for communication — a celebrity might see a fan’s message or even reply. “When fans are gaining access to the celebrity through social media posts, it increases the feeling of closeness.” Says Stever, a researcher on this topic.
As fandoms (粉丝群体) became more visible throughout the latter half of the 20th century, they became associated with youth and immaturity. adolescents (青少年) are most likely to develop intense parasocial relationships, because it can be a chance to practice real adult feelings on someone at a safe distance. And thanks to social media, behavior that might have been limited to one person or a few people might be given the chance to spread. So, a parasocial relationship that starts with healthy boundaries can turn sour.
But, as Stever says, “Anything that can be true about a regular social relationship can be true about a parasocial relationship. Are they positive Can they be good for us Absolutely. Can they be negative Can they be poisonous for us We all know examples of that.”
32. Why’s pop singer Chappell Roan mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To criticize parasocial relationships. B. To reveal a fandom phenomenon.
C. To recommend an interaction pattern. D. To introduce an academic discussion.
33. Which is a classic example of a parasocial relationship
A. Children are greatly attached to their parents.
B. A reader loves a hero in Shakespeare’s play.
C. A student establishes a solid friendship with a roommate.
D. A singer interacts with fans at a meet-and-greet event.
34. How do social media affect parasocial relationships
A. They invade celebrities’ privacy. B. They cloud the lines between fans and celebrities.
C. They develop a shared understanding. D. They promote adolescent immaturity.
35. Which is the best title for the text
A. Social Media: Restricting Parasocial Relationships
B. Invasive Fandom: Unhealthy Fan- celebrity Bonds
C. Disturbed Celebrities: From Admiration to Invasion
D. Parasocial Relationships: Complicated in Digital Age
