Last summer, I went to France for a holiday. I was so excited but also a little nervous because my French was not good.
One hot afternoon, after exploring the city, I felt really tired. I wanted to tell my French friend, Claire, “I am a little tired.” I carefully said the words I’d learned: “Je suis un pue fatigue.”
But Claire burst out laughing. My face felt hot. What had I done wrong Claire explained, “In French, there are words that sound similar but have very different meanings. ‘peu’ means ‘a little,’ but if you pronounce it differently, it can sound like ‘pue’, which means ‘stinks’ — like something smells bad. So, instead of saying you needed a rest, it sounded like you were saying you smelled bad and were tired”
This awkward (尴尬的) moment was a real eye-opener for me. It made me realize just how daunting pronunciation can be in a foreign language. Even small differences in pronunciation can completely change the meaning of what you’re trying to say. The same is true in English, for example, “ship” (a large boat) and “sheep” (a woolly animal) sound very similar, but they mean totally different things.
Now, I pay extra attention to how words sound and what they mean. And if I mix them up again I’ll just laugh along. After all, laughing is part of learning — even if it’s a bit stinky sometimes.
4. Why was the author nervous about his holiday in France
A. He was poor at French. B. He never went abroad.
C. He had no friends there. D. He was in short of money.
5. What awkward moment did the author meet
A. He got a wrong person. B. He made a pronunciation mistake.
C. He was tricked by the locals. D. He spelt a word incorrectly.
6. What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A. Easy. B. Natural. C. Difficult. D. Clear.
7. How did the author’s experience in France affect him
A. He smelled bad and was tired.
B. He hated learning foreign languages.
C. He no longer considered Claire as a friend.
D. He became open to mistakes in language learning.

For many people, barbecues are a chance to enjoy a meal with family and friends. For Stan Hays, however, barbecuing becomes his skill to feed people in need when the disaster happens.
The unique effort began in May, when a severe tornado (龙卷风) hit Joplin, about two hours from Hays’ home. His wife asked him to help. So, he put out the word to his partners and headed down with his barbecue. “We thought we’d be there three to four days, serving maybe 5,000 meals,” Hays said. But the need was there, so Hays and over 300 volunteers worked for 11 days to meet the need.
It was a life-changing experience for Hays, who had never organized any type of large voluntary effort before. While preparing to head home, he and his friends Will Cleaver and Jeff Stith came to the realization. “A barbecue community is able to respond to disasters like this quickly,” Hays said. “So, before we left, we put together a plan to create the Operation BBQ Relief.”
During the last eight years, the group has responded to almost 60 disasters across the United States, including Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the wildfires in northern California. More than 6,800 volunteers have joined the effort, and the group often partners with other organizations to serve the meals.
“Barbecues are comfort food,” Hays said. “If you just lost your house or a loved one, getting a hot meal would remind you of the barbecues you had in the backyard and make you forget about the bad stuff in your life. That’s worth it to me.”
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Volunteers couldn’t meet the requirements.
B. Supplies were far from enough for the victims.
C. Hays’ home was severely damaged by the tornado.
D. The need for food was beyond Hays’ expectation.
9. What made Hays create the Operation BBQ Relief
A. His friends’ suggestion. B. His preference for barbecues.
C His voluntary activity in Joplin. D. His cooperation with other organizations.
10. Which word best describes Hays
A. Warm-hearted. B. Strong-willed.
C. Broad-minded. D. Good-tempered.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. The Bright Future of Barbecues
B. Barbecues: the Best Comfort Food
C. The Role of Barbecues in Voluntary Activities
D. When Disasters Fall, They Bring Barbecues

In a study published earlier this year in Psychological Science, a team of researchers reported a link between spoken fluency and death risk. The group, led by Paolo Ghisetta of the University of Geneva, made use of data from the Berlin Aging Study.
Between 1990 and 2009, investigators assessed the thinking abilities of more than 500 participants who were 70 years old or more when the study began. Specifically, the researchers measured their “sensory speed, event-based memory, spoken fluency, and spoken knowledge” All of the study’s participants have now passed away, and researchers can use the results to see if any of these measures are predictive of how long the participants lived.
Somewhat surprisingly, out of the four thinking measures mentioned above, only one was related to decreased death risk: spoken fluency. Specifically, Ghisetta and his team found “an almost nine-year predicted difference in survival time between the study participants with high or low values on spoken fluency.”
The study supports earlier research on this topic. In 2016, for example, researchers found an association between reading and living longer. They reported that participants who read books had a 23-month “survival advantage” compared to non-readers.
But how much reading was necessary for such an association to be observed The researchers said just 30 minutes a day was sufficient. But they stressed that the strongest association in this study was found for participants who primarily read books as opposed to newspapers and magazines.
Why might reading fiction bring advantages not seen with reading factual material One possibility is that the labor required to create a fictional world in one’s head, along with the effort required to keep track of who said what, and who knows what, can have beneficial thinking effects.
Still, the development of one’s spoken fluency and the reading of fiction are not a cure-all that can magically stave off the effects of aging on the mind and body. But evidence is growing that specific thinking abilities and behaviors are associated with a lot of benefits, including a longer life.
12. What do we know about Ghisetta’s study
A. It lasted for a really long period of times.
B. It involved more than a thousand people.
C. It tracked participants from young to old.
D. It focused on spoken fluency of the elderly.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning Ghisetta’s study
A. Its major limitations. B. Its supporting evidence.
C. Its research method. D. Its significant findings.
14. Why is fiction more helpful than factual reading
A. It strengthens spoken fluency. B. It requires more thinking effort.
C. It brings emotional relaxation. D. It improves event-based memory.
15. What does the underlined part “stave off” in the last paragraph mean
A. ignore. B. Assess. C. Prevent. D. Predict.

There are many things that we should be thankful for in life, but many people aren’t, including me.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable . For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help her until I became a teenager. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my world to worry about helping others.
One summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin(破坏) everything Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Feeling angry, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going ” Mom asked calmly.
“I guess…,” I murmured(嘟哝) under my breath.
“Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I felt even more angry. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we got close to the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. The door opened and we were shown to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby with wounds on his body. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤) such as cuts, scratches(抓伤) and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank.
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.

A. ignore. B. Assess. C. Prevent. D. Predict.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

【答案】Dear Chris,
I'm glad you’re interested in the photos of our school sports meet on the website. The sports meet was held on the school playground last Friday.
Our class participated in the relay race. I was one of the runners. We all tried our best and finally won the second place.
What impressed me most was the high-jump event. One boy from another class fell down during the jump, but he quickly got up, brushed the dust off, and continued. His perseverance really inspired us.
Looking forward to sharing more with you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节和给定段落开头语进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
As I was Looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl with brown eyes looking up at me. Her angelic face lighted, although there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. Do you want to play dolls with me ” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was a meaningful time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.
