Last week, my family and I went camping in the Lake District National Park for two nights. At first, I worried we’d be alone in the middle of nowhere. “How will we wash, and go to the toilet ” I asked my dad. Dad laughed, and explained, “We can’t camp anywhere in a national park, and we have to use special campsites (野营地).”
As we drove closer to the Lake District, green hills started coming into our eyes. Our campsite was right by a large lake, and the views (风景) amazed us. The lake was surrounded by all mountains, and the water was so still and clear.
The campsite had clean showers, toilets and a small shop. We planned to put up our tent next to the lake. It was our first time camping. That night, we cooked supper on our camping stove, and it tasted surprisingly good. We sat outside by the lake eating, listening to the gentle sound of the water. The two nights went by so quickly. We had a wonderful time, and none of us were ready to go when we had to pack up. After packing everything into the car, Dad walked around our tent, staring at the ground.
“What have you lost, Dad ” I asked.
Dad said, “No—but when you go camping, you have to take away everything you brought with you. You mustn’t leave rubbish or anything.”

5 Ways to Make Your Dog Smarter
Well-trained dogs are smarter, act better and are more fun to be with. In fact, looking “smart” often just comes from training. 56 Here are 5 useful tips.
Start training early. The earlier you train your little dog, the more likely you’ll see good results. Try short training several times a day—it works better. And don’t worry if you have an older dog; it’s still possible to teach it new things.
57 Dogs can understand about as many words as a two-year-old kid. Use rewards (奖励) to help them connect words with actions, activities or things. For example, most dogs know “treat”, “toy” or “walk” because they get food, games or outings when they hear these words.
Use hand signals (手势). Dogs like responding to what they see and can understand human hand movements. 58 Use hand signals with your voice orders, and your dog will act faster.
59 Short, regular (定期的) training in your dog’s life works well. It can be done anytime and anywhere—training regularly is key. For example, practice simple orders before giving your dog dinner, when it’s more willing to listen.
Teach tricks (技巧). Dogs that can do tricks look smart. Besides being fun, it helps you build a closer relationship with your dog. Start with easy ones like “stand up”, then learn more.
60 Every day you spend together will be filled with more warmth and joy.
A.Connect words with rewards.
B.Keep training regularly.
C.These games keep their brains active.
D.But how can you train your dog to be smarter
E.Try these ways, and your dog will become smarter and closer to you.
F.Pointing is a good example—point to a toy, and your dog will pick it up.

My primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. Mother would be waiting for me at the table.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to act the princess (公主) in the school play. But no matter how easily and well I performed at home, the moment I stepped onstage (上台), no words appeared in my mind. That morning my teacher talked with me. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt me, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I said nothing at lunch. But my mother sensed my upset. After lunch, she asked me to walk in the yard with her.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose leaves were turning green. We could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass as well. “I’m going to dig up all these dandelions,” she said. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
“Yes, every flower has value in its own way, doesn’t it ” She asked thoughtfully. “And that is true of people, too.”
Realizing that she had understood, I told her what had happened while crying. She spread her arms and hugged me kindly, “Not being a princess isn’t bad.” Soon she proudly said, “Just as all parts in a play are important, so are all people in life. You will be a beautiful narrator in my eyes.”
