Sandesh Kadur, a National Geographic Explorer, has spent 25 years documenting rare wildlife, transforming his childhood passion into a mission to protect Earth’s fragile ecosystems.
When he was young, Kadur was fascinated by Jim Corbett’s tales of big cats. Inspired, he once cycled into the jungle with a friend to observe big cats at a watering hole. At night, they really saw a big cat. Bathed in moonlight, he realized his life’s goal: to capture and share nature’s wonders.
At 12, he borrowed his father’s camera — a “magic box” that froze time. His father, an entomologist(昆虫学家), got him looking at the small things. So he began intentionally focusing his lens on small insects, trying to understand what he was looking at. He would develop the camera film weeks later, annotating(注释)the settings and reattempting the shots. As he grew older, his love for nature, however, conflicted with academics. Failing high school, he moved to Brownsville, Texas to study hotel management — a choice that unexpectedly refueled his love for storytelling.
In Brownsville, Kadur explored Mexico’s cloud forests and landed a job as a jungle tour guide. There, he met filmmaker John Bax, who introduced him to documentary work. When they embarked on a documentary project together, Bax withdrew from it. Kadur, then 19 and untrained in film, pursued the project on his own. He spent three years filming India’s Western Ghats, capturing species like the “smoke cat” for the first time. His debut film, Sahyadris: Mountains of the Monsoon, brought the Western Ghats’ biodiversity into attention, aiding its 2012 UNESCO World Heritage status.
Through visual storytelling, Kadur offers his audiences glimpses into a rarely-seen natural world, urging them to protect its delicate inhabitants. “Visual art has conveyed stories for millennia. Now we’re doing that with technology, and it will continue to advance.” said Kadur, “I think the impact of storytelling can last a lifetime. It can last generations.”
4. What led Kadur into nature
A. Fever for big cats. B. Love for adventure.
C. Curiosity about filming. D. Fascination with Jim’s tales.
5. What was his father’s influence on him
A. Teaching him photography skills.
B. Introducing him to documentary work.
C. Helping him regain love for storytelling.
D. Arousing his curiosity about scientific details.
6. What is Kadur’s opinion about visual storytelling
A. It well entertains audiences. B. It serves as a bridge for nature.
C. Its value lies in expression skills. D. Its impact depends on technology.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Kadur
A. Passionate and dedicated. B. Talented and ambitious.
C. Independent and committed. D. Responsible and generous.

For many students, staying awake all night to study is common practice. According to Medical News Today, around 20 percent of students pull all-nighters at least once a month, and about 35 percent stay up past three in the morning once or more weekly.
That being said, staying up all night to study is one of the worst things students can do for their grades. In October of 2022, two MIT professors found a relationship between sleep and test scores: the less students slept during the semester, the worse their scores.
So, why is it that sleep is so important for test scores In the last 20 years, scientists have found that sleep impacts more than just students’ ability to perform well; it improves their ability to learn, memorize, retain (保存), recall, and use their new knowledge to solve problems creatively, which contributes to better test scores.
When learning facts and information, most of what we learn is temporarily stored in a region of the brain called the hippocampus (海马体). Some scientists believe that, like most storage centers, the hippocampus has limited storage capacity. This means, if the hippocampus is full, and we try to learn more information, we won’t be able to.
In one study, a group of 44 participants underwent two sessions of learning, once at noon and again at 6:00 PM. Half of the group was allowed to nap (小睡) between sessions, while the other half took part in standard activities. The researchers found that the group that napped between learning sessions learned just as easily at 6:00 PM as they did at noon. The group that didn’t nap, however, experienced a significant decrease in learning ability.
It’s no surprise that the MIT study previously mentioned revealed no improvement in scores for those who only guarantee good sleep the night before a big test. In fact, the MIT researchers concluded that if students want to see an improvement in their test scores, they have to guarantee good sleep during the entire learning process.
8. What did the two MIT professors find in 2022
A. Most students were lacking in sleep.
B. Students were under too much pressure.
C. Good sleep improved students’ memory.
D. Insufficient sleep worsened students’ grades.
9. According to some scientists, what will happen if our hippocampus fills up
A. We’ll forget things easily.
B. We’ll fail to learn new things.
C. We’ll get ready to think creatively.
D. We’ll activate other parts of our brain.
10. What may the MIT researchers advise students to do to improve their test scores
A. Study late before a test.
B. Sleep as much as you can.
C. Form good sleep habits.
D. Focus on study during the daytime.
11. How does the author try to prove his point
A. By offering research results.
B. By providing experts’ views.
C. By analyzing some theories.
D. By sharing some experiences.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly seen not just as a tool, but as a potential method in environmental protection. AI can help reduce global warming, improve resource use, and develop our ability to deal with environmental problems. Yet with great power comes responsibility. A recent study discovers that if it is not carefully designed and controlled, the very technologies for helping may create the environmental harms that have never been faced.
After studying five key areas where AI can be especially effective, the study shows that in the areas responsible for nearly half of global emissions (排放), AI applications could help to lower greenhouse gas emissions. But there are trade-offs. According to the study, a lot of harms have appeared: training large models uses a lot of electricity and water; setting them widely increases energy needs; and carrying necessary hardware adds environmental footprint. The study report warns these costs might reduce benefits unless actively managed.
While AI for environmental protection is a promising direction, its success depends on governance and values. To achieve that goal, several practices are necessary: setting environmental impact assessment (评价); building energy-efficient architectures; using renewable energy; ensuring that communities likely to be affected have a voice; and widening social frameworks to contain more-than-human concerns. Furthermore, the social impact must be taken seriously. Different from the previous discovery, the report argues that AI has so far overlooked the impact on ecosystems, animals, plants and climate. It suggests using more reasonable methods to ensure a balance between harms and benefits, wise decision-making, and the effect of non-human factors in management.
In conclusion, AI has the potential to be valuable for protecting the environment — but only if we consider responsible designs and regulations that go beyond human-only concerns. If we do, AI can strengthen human efforts, not weaken them.
12. What is the possible effect of AI according to the study
A Affecting global climate. B. Wasting valuable resources.
C. Weakening human ability. D. Causing environmental problems.
13. Which of the following has a similar meaning to “But there are trade-offs.”
A. Well begun is half done. B. Every coin has two sides.
C. Rome wasn’t built in one day. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.
14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. Energy saving should be stressed. B. All communities can have a voice.
C. Proper managements are essential. D. Human-only factors need considering.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards AI in protecting environment
A. Cautious. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Indifferent.

Shoes are made for walking.
But Aamir, a homeless Indian boy, doubted it. Wandering the noisy railway platform, he found one of his flip-flops (人字拖鞋) broken again. He hurried to a corner, sat down and tried to fix it, his bare foot pressing awkwardly against the ground. However, it was beyond repair.
He gave up and looked around aimlessly, staring at people’s shoes. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to two boyish legs wearing perfectly white socks and equally perfect black leather (皮) shoes, which were shining in the mid-day sun. It was a boy of his age. He treasured his shoes so much, obviously, because every ten seconds, he stopped, bent down and carefully wiped his shoes. His father was constantly glancing over and saying, “Hurry up! The train is coming!”
Aamir’s eyes followed the father and son, but mostly the beautiful shoes, as if enchanted (被施魔法的). Imagining himself wearing them, the comfort from the good leather, jaw-dropping look on his friends’ faces, he couldn’t help cracking a big smile.
The bell of the train drew him back; the fancy-shoe boy and his father were about to get aboard. They tried to crowd into the doorway. However, the instant the boy entered the compartment (车厢), one of his shoes fell off and before he could pick it up, the train began to pull away.
The shoe was now lying alone on the platform. Aamir’s eyes lit up with excitement. Like an arrow, he shot for the shoe and then picked it up, holding it with both hands as if holding the Queen’s crown. After a few seconds of hesitating and looking from the shoe to the train and back, he began racing--with only one good shoe, his flip-flop.
He held the leather shoe up, trying to pass it to the boy through the window, who was desperately reaching out his hand as well. However, it was never close enough.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】That left Aamir no choice but to throw the shoe onto the train. With his eyes fixed on the window, Aamir put all his strength in his right hand and made a powerful throw. However, he abruptly fell off because of the broken flip-flop. Without a second thought, he tried again, the shoe just flew past the window frame and fell on the platform like a dead leaf. Seeing this, Aamir stamped his feet, wearing a frustrated look. “Are shoes really made for walking ” Aamir thought with depression. He drooped his head, not knowing what to do next.
To his surprise, Aamir saw the other shoe thrown out of the window. Miraculously, it landed on the platform several steps away from him. Before he could look up again and seek out the fancy-shoe boy, the train sped on, vanishing in the distance. What remained in sight was the meandering rail track and the rolling mountains far away. Twenty years later, when he was launching his new footwear product at a press conference, wearing a pair of shining leather shoes, Aamir started his presentation with a simple sentence: “Shoes are made for walking.”
