A few years ago, my wife and I had a chance to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved jogging, so I was really happy when I found the apartment we lived in was next to the Central Park. I could go for a run before I went to work every morning.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers (抢劫者) in the park, I didn’t usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything But one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put a $10 bill in my back pocket.
While I was running through the park, another jogger ran into me. He apologized and continued running. I thought it was kind of strange, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. I immediately started to run after the jogger. I finally caught up and took him by the arm. I started shouting and demanding that he should give me the $10 bill. This seemed to frighten him, and he quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I began to tell my wife my story. “You won't believe what happened to me,” I started. She immediately stopped me, “1 know. You left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems.
A study conducted by researchers from the UK’s Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (颞叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities.
Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who just looked at pared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right, Chinese characters have more complex in structure (复杂的结构). Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in all four directions: up, down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners.
Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to language learning.
28. What is the text centred on
A. Why Asian children are better at math test.
B. Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn.
C. How learning Chinese benefits our cognition.
D. How Chinese writing differs from English writing.
29. What does the study by UK’s Wellcome Trust show
A. English speakers should learn Chinese.
B. Chinese has more intonations than English.
C. Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity.
D. Mastering different meanings of Chinese is difficult.
30. Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems
A. They need quite different cognitive abilities. B. Chinese writing looks like math symbols.
C. Chinese children naturally do well in math. D. They share several key cognitive abilities.
31. How is the text mainly developed
A. By offering supporting findings. B. By comparing former research.
C. By discussing problems and solutions. D. By listing advantages and disadvantages.
D
My daughter said she wanted to redeem (重新装修) her room. The thought of tackling a room redecorating project intimidated me, but I knew that following through on helping my girl create a new space for herself would mean a lot to her. So, I worked up my courage.
Together, my daughter and I set a budget for our project, spread paint samples on her wall and calculated how much paint we would need. And finally — a deep breath — we started painting. Neither of us had ever painted a room before. After rolling a paint roller across her wall for the first time, my daughter frowned and said, “Maybe we should hire someone to do the painting for us, Mom.”
I couldn’t help wondering if she might be right, but I assured her that if we followed the painting pointers we had studied and took our time, we could do a fine job. I didn’t want her to miss out on the wonderful feeling of competence that comes from trying something you want to do but fear you might not be able to do.
There had been many times when we’d realized we had been in the wrong way and had to do it again. We had to problem-solve with whoever might help. Finally, we finished the painting. It was not perfect, but the overall effect made my daughter really happy. It was her ideas and work that made all visible.
Thinking about doing such a project with my daughter, it struck me that she got to see me being a rank beginner-messing up and starting over all the way. She watched me looking up answers when I needed them and asking for help when I hit dead ends. Instead of being an authority with all the answers, I learned with her. I showed my daughter what learning looks like, in all its messy glory. That’s definitely the best part I’ll treasure.
32. What does the underlined word “intimidated” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Inspired. B. Confused. C. Impressed. D. Frightened.
33. Why didn’t the author hire a painter
A. To exhibit her talent for decoration.
B. To overcome her fear of failure.
C. To keep the project under budget.
D. To make the kid enjoy the joy of success.
34. What does the author think is the most rewarding part of this redecoration
A. Being a model learner.
B. Being a success in decorating.
C. Being a rank beginner.
D. Being an authority with all answers.
35. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Energetic. B. Reflective. C. Encouraging. D. Respectful.

Music helps us exercise, but why does it have this effect Scientists say there are two main reasons.
The first is simple: music distracts (使……分心)us. ___36___ After we exercise for 20 minutes, for example, our body may be tired. But because of the music, we may not feel this right away. As a result, we will exercise a little longer.
___37___ When we hear dance music, for example, we naturally start to move to the beat (节拍). An upbeat (欢快的) song also makes us feel happier. This gives us energy and helps us exercise longer.
___38___ In an experiment, Fritz put 61 people in small groups. Then, they all exercised twice. The first time, each group worked out for six minutes while listening to music. The second time, they exercised for six minutes on special Jymmin machines. On these machines, each group made music as they moved. ___39___
How does Fritz explain this Maybe people did better on the Jymmin machines because they had more control, he says. People created the beat. They could make it go faster or slower. Also, each group was making music together and having fun. ___40___ For example, it may even be a good way to treat depression (抑郁症).
Fill in each blank in the article with a proper sentence given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you will need.
A. Music can also motivate (激发) us.
B. We often give up exercising because of tiredness.
C. Scientists have proved these two points through an experiment.
D. When we listen to a song we like, our brain pays attention to the music.
E. In the future, Fritz wants to find out if Jymmin exercise can help with some illnesses.
F. However, according to a new study by scientist Tom Fritz, this is only part of the explanation.
G. At the end, 53 of the 61 people said the same thing: they felt less tired when they exercised on the Jymmin machines.

【答案】Hi Coward,
I’m sorry to know that you have trouble adapting yourself to senior high school. However, the situation is easy to change if you take my suggestions into consideration.
First of all, why not communicate with your teacher face to face By doing this, your teacher will know your inner thoughts and help you solve this problem. What’s more, if I were you, I would be engaged in various kinds of activities held by class actively. More importantly, it would be a good idea if you made some friends with common interests. If you do this, you can share happiness and sadness with them and help you get to know them to get rid of loneliness at high school.
I hope you will find these ideas useful, and fit in well with your new school. Look forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
