Shi Wenlan said the only thing that interests her is dealing with smelly centuries-old books. “I don’t want to drink, I don’t want to eat or move. I like sitting alone under the warm lights, mending holes and cutting pages. I’m a boring person, but I’m doing an interesting thing, ” she said. In the past 26 years, the 51-year-old restorer of ancient books at the Hunan Library in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, has brought about 100,000 pages of ancient books back to life. Her work helps to ensure that ancient knowledge can be read and appreciated by people today. Shi has great faith in her little- known job. “Ancient books are precious documents and important achievements of Chinese civilization. To restore them is to rescue cultural relics that are dying out, ” she said.
Books age and decay(腐烂)over time. Though technology, such as accurately controlled temperatures and humidity levels, can be used to slow the process, a number of old books are on the edge of withering away forever, experts said. At the Hunan Library alone, a third of its 680,000 ancient books are in urgent need of restoration, which means each of its eight restorers needs to complete 3,000 pages a year, said Liu Xueping, director of the library’s special collection department. More young restorers must be trained to promote the production of ancient books, so human civilization can be preserved despite the damage of time, experts said.
In recent years, the government has attached great importance to the restoration of ancient books and has put forward many policies to encourage more people to take up the work. The number of restorers has now reached about 1,000. They have better educational backgrounds and receive more systematic training, as well as better salaries and higher social status, Shi said.

Math is a necessary skill that people use throughout their lives. Unfortunately, many children and adults feel stressed and anxious when they have to do math. They may be experiencing what is called “math anxiety”. Because of this, many people believe that they are bad at math and don’t like math.
A recent research has shown that some children as young as 6 years old may feel anxious about math. A team of researchers asked 154 children in grades 1 and 2 questions like “How do you feel when taking a big test in your math class ” The children expressed how nervous they felt by pointing to a position on a scale (刻度), where there were different faces from a very nervous face on the left to a calm face on the right. After answering these questions, the children took a math test. These researchers found that almost half of the children who participated in the study said that they were at least somewhat nervous about doing math. Also, children with higher math anxiety got worse scores on the math test.
Scientists have also found that math anxiety develops in children who experience certain kinds of social situations that influence their thoughts or feelings. This means that the child’s emotions, opinions, or behaviors are affected by things that other people say or do. For example, teachers with high math anxiety were more likely to have students with poorer math achievements at the end of the school year.
Good news is that researchers have found tools to help people with math anxiety. These tools are called interventions (干预). For example, researchers did an intervention where they asked children with math anxiety to write about their math-related worries. Then they found that children’s math test scores improved. Therefore, it is advised to talk to classmates and teachers about math anxiety. This is the first step toward helping to reduce the possibly harmful effects of math anxiety.
8. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 1
A. Math ability. B. Stressful life.

A. By making a math project.

B. One’s math anxiety can affect others.

D. Children should avoid social situations.
11. What is suggested for students with math anxiety

With the broader application of the facial recognition (面部识别) technology, related debates, too, are on the rise.
Facial information can be collected when one is completely unaware. Maybe at one point or another, the surveillance (监视) cameras have collected one’s facial information. Once such information is given away, the results can be terrible because unlike digital passwords, which can be changed, hardly can people change their faces.
The illegal collection of face-based information has opened new space for criminal (犯罪) activities. In 2019, a new mobile app called ZAO turned into a hit within only weeks after its coming on the market. People could upload photos of their faces and then replace their own facial features with those of TV and movie stars. However, the app soon caused anxiety, with some users worrying that their image could be used by criminals to cheat facial recognition payment software (软件) — resulting in money losses.
This risk caught the attention of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC). On July 28, it made a set of rules to provide a legal solution to the problem. When online platforms or apps gain user agreement to process facial information, they should present the specific terms (条款) to users for special consideration, says the SPC document. In addition, the newly issued rules forbid the practice of forcing users to agree to facial recognition terms if they want to get services that do not rely on the access to facial data.
Yang Wanming, Vice President of the SPC, concluded that the strengthening of the protection of personal information meets the people’s expectations and comes first in the jobs of the people’s courts. The SPC will carry on its efforts to promote the legal, proper and efficient use of data and support a healthy development of the digital economy.
12 Why can giving away facial information lead to serious results
A. Because faces are not easy to change. B. Because people are tired of passwords.
C. Because people are familiar with cameras. D. Because people are unaware of a new technology.
13. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. Apps should not be popular too soon.
B. Payment software should not be applied.
C. People must be prevented from posting photos of their faces.
D. Hidden danger could be caused by the misuse of facial information.
14. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. How the SPC deals with legal cases. B. How the SPC supplies better protections.
C. Why the SPC puts forward specific terms. D. Why the SPC makes changes to former rules.
15. What is Yang Wanming’s attitude towards the new rules
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Positive. D. Unclear.
