Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle — named the Transition — has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.
Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit(定金) to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost as much as $279,000. And it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.
Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.
Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s (联邦航空管理局) decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. The advantages of flying cars.
B. The basic data of the Transition.
C. The possible market for flying cars.
D. The designers of the Transition.
9. Why is the Transition unlikely to show up on too many roads
A. It causes traffic jams. B. It is difficult to operate. C. It is very expensive. D. It burns too much fuel.
10. What is the government’s attitude to the development of the flying car
A. The government supports it. B. The government is against it.
C. The government sets higher standards to discourage it D. The government thinks it is on the way out.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Flying Car at Auto Show B. The Transition’s First Flight
C. Pilots’ Dream Coming True D. Flying Car Closer to Reality
D
It's a popular belief that a fish's memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don't remember what they've eaten or where they’ve been, and they don't identify you or any of their friends--every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.
But don't be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences.
In fact. scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively(挑衅地) in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past "fights".But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild. "If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risk,"lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.

A. fish don't recognize any of their friends
B. a fish's memory lasts for only seven minutes
C. fish can only remember part of their past experiences

A. They can remember their enemies and fight.
B. They can remember where to get food and survive.
C. They can remember their friends and help each other.
D. They can remember where to go when in danger.
14. What can we learn from the text
A. Only African cichlids have a good memory.
B. African cichlids can remember things for 12 days.
C. African cichlids always treat other fish aggressively.
D. African cichlids don't belong to the list of smart animals.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel (争吵) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the angry words from her mother. After she walked aimlessly in the street for hours she felt hungry but had no money. She stood in front of a shop which sold noodles for several minutes, but she had to leave. The seller of the noodle shop came out and noticed the young girl.
“Hey, girl, you want to have noodles ”
“Oh, yes, but I have no money on me,” she replied.
“Oh, that’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” the owner said, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your thanks to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock. She remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted (感激的), but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
