A
I’m a college teacher and researcher. At 40, I’d been writing essays (文章) for a decade. While I’d had some minor success with unpaid bylines (署名行), most of my essays were overlooked after I sent them into the vastness of the Internet.
But writing is deep-rooted in me, and despite my frustration (沮丧), giving up wasn’t an option. I decided to go back to school. Last summer, I took a writing class with The New York Times bestselling author Susan Shapiro.
To my surprise, Shapiro’s course wasn’t just about learning how to get your writing published. It was also an eight-week course on how to overcome self-doubt. She shared stories about how hard she’d worked to get her essays published. She was always willing to talk about how much writing, rewriting, submitting (提交), and resubmitting she’d had to do. “The harder I work, the luckier I get,” she said.
For our final class, Shapiro encouraged us to write about our most embarrassing secret. I confessed how masks let me fully enjoy the freedom from worrying about what other people thought about the lower half of my face. Five weeks later, my essay, “I am insecure about my face. For me, masks are liberating”, was published in The Washington Post. It was my first piece published in major media and the first time I’d been paid for my writing.
Five months after my piece was published, I got a book deal. I am now officially a children’s writer. My first novel, Jawbreaker, is scheduled to be published in the spring of 2023.
After so many rejections, getting a book deal was something I never thought would happen to me. Taking Shapiro’s class and learning to overcome self-doubt changed my life. I continue to set publishing goals and am no longer discouraged by rejection.
6.What can we learn about the author before taking Susan Shapiro’s writing class
A.The author had already published many essays in major media.
B.Most of the author’s essays were ignored after being sent online.
C.The author gave up writing for a period because of frustration.
D.The author had become a famous children’s writer.
7.Why did Susan Shapiro share her own experiences of writing and submitting essays
A.To show she was more successful than the author.
B.To encourage the author and other students to keep working hard.
C.To explain why it’s easy to get essays published.
D.To ask the students to copy her writing style.
8.What does the underlined word “confessed” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Refused B.Forgot C.Admitted D.Imagined
9.What is the main idea of this passage
A.How the author became a college teacher and researcher.
B.The author’s experience of overcoming self-doubt and achieving writing success.
C.The importance of reading essays from major media.
D.Susan Shapiro’s great influence on all her students.
10.What can we learn from the author’s success
A.Persistence brings rewards. B.Good advice is invaluable.
C.Writing boosts people’s confidence. D.Education is the key to success.

If you were born in the 2000s, you are part of a generation (一代人) that is young, creative, connected, and global. But what do adults think about your generation
Some adults worry that you are more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They call you the “face-down generation” because you use your phones so often. They wonder if you are too busy texting and taking selfies to succeed in real life.
Other adults think that today’s youth are spoilt and don’t want to face adult challenges. Many young people were raised by “helicopter parents” who always guided them and filled their schedules with homework and extra activities. Because of this, some young people seem to prefer staying like teenagers even when they grow older.
But there is hope! Many teenagers today are better educated and more creative than earlier generations. They are enthusiastic and willing to lead. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people like Malala Yousafzai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for supporting girls’ education.
So if you are part of this generation, there are many reasons to be hopeful. The future looks bright for the face-down generation.
11.Why are young people called the “face-down generation”
A.Because they often study with their heads down.
B.Because they always look down at their phones.
C.Because they don’t like talking to adults.
D.Because they are always tired.
12.What does the term “helicopter parents” mean
A.Parents who are strict and serious.
B.Parents who are always watching and helping their children.
C.Parents who travel a lot for work.
D.Parents who don’t care about their children’s studies.
13.Which of the following is a positive quality of the young generation mentioned in the text
A.They are always busy taking selfies.
B.They are better educated and have more creativity.
C.They don’t like to face challenges.
D.They depend too much on their parents.
14.What is the writer’s overall attitude toward the face-down generation
A.Hopeful B.Critical C.Worried D.Disappointed
15.Why does the writer mention Malala Yousafzai
A.To show that young people are always on their phones.
B.To give an example of a brave and influential young person.
C.To explain what a “helicopter parent” is.
D.To complain about the problems of the younger generation.
第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
Memorizing English words is key for language learning, but many struggle to do it well. Rote repetition often leads to quick forgetting — you need a better way. 16
First, set small daily goals. Don’t try 100 words a day; that’s too frustrating. Aim for 20-30 new words daily. This helps build long-term memory without stress.
17 A word can have many meanings. For example, instead of writing “run” alone, note it in “She runs a small shop.” This makes recall easier.
Use active recall, not just reading word lists. 18 Cover the Chinese meaning and try to remember it. If you can’t, mark it for later review. This strengthens memory far more than passive reading.
Finally, review with spaced repetition. Our memory fades over time, so regular reviews are a must. 19 Review new words on the day you learn them, then after 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month. This schedule matches how our brains keep information, so words stay in long-term memory.
With these tips, you’ll stop wasting time on useless memorization and build a useful vocabulary. Remember, the goal isn’t just to “know” words — it’s to use them confidently. 20
A.Learn words in context, not alone.
B.This small, steady plan works better for most learners.
C.Consistent use of these tips turns short-term memory into skill.
D.Without regular review, even well-memorized words fade.
E.Use flashcards or a notebook to test yourself often.

16.上文“Memorizing English words is key for language learning, but many struggle to do it well. Rote repetition often leads to quick forgetting — you need a better way. (记英语单词是语言学习的关键,但很多人都难以做好这件事。死记硬背往往会导致快速遗 ——你需要一种更好的方法。)”指出英语单词很重要,而死记硬背易遗忘,需要更好方法。而下文则给出了具体的建议。选项B“This small, steady plan works better for most learners. (这种少量、稳定的计划对大多数学习者更有效。)”延续上文内容,指出这种方法很好,同时自然引出下文内容。故选B。
17.空处为段首句,为本段主要内容。根据下文“A word can have many meanings. For example, instead of writing “run” alone, note it in “She runs a small shop.” This makes recall easier. 18.上文“Use active recall, not just reading word lists. (要用主动回忆的方式,而不只是看单词表。)”提出要主动回忆,而不是只看单词表;而下文“Cover the Chinese meaning and try to remember it. (遮住中文释义,试着回忆它的意思。)”则建议遮住中文意思回忆,记不住就标记。选项E“Use flashcards or a notebook to test yourself often.( 经常用单词卡或笔记本自我检测。)”给出了主动回忆的具体工具和方式,衔接前文的方法原则与后文的操作细节,符合逻辑。故选E。
19.上文“Finally, review with spaced repetition. Our memory fades over time, so regular reviews are a must. (最后,用间隔重复法复习。我们的记忆会随时间消退,所以定期复习必不可少。)”提出,用间隔重复法复习,记忆会随时间消退,定期复习是必需的;而下文“Review new words on the day you learn them, then after 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month. (当天学完新单词后就复习,之后在1天后、1周后、1个月后再各复习一次。)”则给出具体复习时间安排。选项F“Without regular review, even well-memorized words fade. (没有定期复习,即使记牢的单词也会慢慢遗忘。)”从反面强调没有定期复习,即使记牢的单词也会遗忘,进一步论证了定期复习的必要性。故选D。
20.上文“With these tips, you’ll stop wasting time on useless memorization and build a useful vocabulary. Remember, the goal isn’t just to “know” words — it’s to use them confidently. (掌握这些技巧,你就能不再把时间浪费在无效的记忆上,进而积累起实用的词汇量。记住,目标不只是“认识”单词——而是能自信地运用它们。)”总结了用这些技巧能避免无效记忆,积累实用词汇,并强调目标不是认识单词,而是自信使用单词。选项C“Consistent use of these tips turns short-term memory into skill. (坚持使用这些技巧,能将短期记忆转化为语言技能。)”中的“consistent use of these tips”呼应前文的“with these tips”,“turns short-term memory into skill”则承接“自信使用单词”的最终目标,作为结尾句升华主题,总结全文。故选C。
