The pond is silent — until the first cry: “Found something!” A swimmer ducks into the water. She emerges, fist first, clutching a pair of bright blue children’s swimming goggles. She shakes them overhead, as if she has won a prize.
Over the next hour, on a cloudy Saturday morning in July, the team of 15 — all over age 65, all women — hunts for trash across Mares Pond, a 28-acre kettle hole on Cape Cod, at depths of up to 8 feet. These are the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG). Since 2017, the group, which accepts only older women as members, has made it its mission to remove trash from ponds across Cape Cod.
The group’s existence is owed to Susan Baur, a retired psychologist. As a lifelong nature fan, she had begun swimming in ponds on the cape as a safer alternative to the ocean. However, between mud, darkness and snapping turtles, the world of the pond was at first one of anxiety for her.
In 2017, on a whim, she rounded up two friends and a stranger with a kayak and together, they cleared a large amount of litter from a pond. Soon others joined them, and, like Baur, they found a sense of wonder in the pond cleanups.
While many outsiders have expressed their gratitude to OLAUG for cleaning up the ponds, some have questioned why they refer to themselves as “old ladies”. Others have said she should open the group to all ages, and to men.
Although she admits that it wasn’t initially a thoughtful choice, she now believes that the “old lady” identity is a crucial part of what the group is about. “Over 65, if you’re healthy enough to do what we’re doing, it is the age of gratitude,” Baur says. “You are so grateful that you can still do this.”
24. Why was the group OLAUG founded
A. To promote an active way of life. B. To rescue children from the ponds.
C. To clean up garbage in the ponds. D. To advocate swimming to keep fit.
25. What do we know about Susan Baur from the text
A. She longs for a quiet retired life. B. She cares about old ladies' life.
C. She is keen on physical training. D. She is a nature-loving woman.
26. What is some people’s suggestion to the group
A. To be more inclusive. B. To broaden its business.
C. To rename the group. D. To be more independent.
27. Why does Baur particularly care about their “old lady” identity
A. It helps to promote their image. B. It helps boost their sense of pride.
C. It benefits their physical health. D. It helps them win more respect.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is still in its infancy, yet it is already revolutionizing medicine, making health care more accurate and less expensive for everyone.
In 2022, the Department of Health and Human Services reported that about 6 percent of the more than 130 million people who go to emergency rooms every year are misdiagnosed. Of those, 2.6 million people are unnecessarily harmed because of their misdiagnosis. Roughly 400,000 are permanently disabled or die.
Artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly reduce those tragedies. A recent study out of Boston comparing the performance of chatbot-assisted physicians in diagnosing patients to just chatbots themselves found that the bots performed considerably better. Given a patient’s case history and symptoms, the chatbot alone scored an average of 90 percent in correctly diagnosing their condition. Physicians using the technology scored only 76 percent on average — just slightly better than the 74 percent average for humans with no AI help at all.
A 2024 review of studies similarly found that screenings for skin cancer aided by AI were more accurate than those without the technology. It is also better at determining which tumors are benign (良性), limiting the number of unnecessary and expensive checks that patients must endure, not to mention the anxiety that comes with the procedures. Another review found similar results for breast cancer screenings, while also showing that AI reduced the workload of radiologists by 68 percent.
Of course, the use of AI in medicine is not to replace humans; it is to give them better tools to help their patients. Then again, as AI models improve, it’s possible to imagine a future in which physicians are required to use them in screenings, and doctors devote more and more of their time to doing things AI is less suited to do, such as interacting with patients, explaining the medicine, and thinking through unusual or unexpected circumstances.
28. What is the 2022 report mainly concerned about
A. The wide use of AI in medicine. B. The urgent need of medical care.
C. The seriousness of misdiagnosis. D. The cause of death and disability.
29. Which aspect of medical AI does the Boston study focus on
A. Diagnostic accuracy. B. Treatment effects.
C. Medical screening. D. Up-dated models.
30. What is the main purpose of applications of medical AI
A. To make health care cheaper. B. To offer a tool for diagnosis.
C. To reduce the doctors’ burden. D. To take place of medical staff.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the use of AI in medicine
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Favorable.
D
If you use lots of emoji (表情符号) when messaging your friends, you may be more emotionally intelligent — that is, better able to understand your emotions and those of others. That is the conclusion of a team of U.S. researchers from Indiana University (IU), who also found that reduced emoji use with friends and partners is associated with an avoidant relationship attachment style.
“The way we interact during virtual communications may reveal something more about ourselves,” said paper author and IU psychologist Simon Dubé in a statement. “It is not just a smiley face or heart emoji — it’s a way to convey meaning and communicate more effectively, and how you use it tells us something about you,” he said.
In their study, Dubé and his colleagues interviewed 320 U.S. adults who regularly send and receive text messages. Each subject was surveyed about his or her identity information, typical emoji use, emotional intelligence and so-called attachment styles.
The latter refers to the ways in which we relate to other people when in close relationships and are thought to be influenced by how we interact with parents and other caregivers early in life. Children who feel safe, protected and supported by their caregivers tend to go on to develop a secure attachment style, which is the healthiest type. In contrast, children whose parents are emotionally distant or dismissive tend to develop an avoidant attachment style and struggle to develop close relationships later in life.
Inconsistent caregiving, meanwhile, can lead to anxious attachment, where people long for closeness but meanwhile fear abandonment and rejection.
The researchers found that texters with higher levels of emotional intelligence and secure attachment styles tend to use more emoji when messaging. Overall, women were found to use emoji more with friends and family than their male counterparts do. However, women were found to send and receive emoji less often with friends, dates and romantic partners when they exhibited more avoidant styles of attachment. Men with avoidant attachment, meanwhile, were found to send fewer emoji to partners.
The team admitted that its study was limited. The participants were mainly white, married, educated, English-speaking people and therefore do not fully reflect the population.
32. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Emoji use strengthening family ties. B. Attachment styles affecting emoji use.
C. The development of attachment styles. D. Emoji use and emotional intelligence.
33. What did Simon Dubé mean about Emoji use
A. It shows your skills of interaction. B. It helps keep a close relationship.
C. It reveals your private information. D. It raises communication efficiency.
34. What might result in avoidant attachment
A. Lack of care in childhood. B. Having a secure childhood.
C. Using no emoji when texting. D. The overuse of social media.
35. What might be a cause of the limitation of the study
A. Insufficient amount of data. B. No supporting evidence.
C. Improper way of sampling. D. Mistakes in data analysis.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Life was peaceful in the town of Willow Creek. But one chilly autumn morning, a new neighbor moved in across the street. He was a college student. He had brought with him a beer-pong table, which was set on his front lawn.
The beer-pong table was within full view of my kitchen window. It was a tool for the noisy, late-night parties by college students. I knew that all too well from once living near a university.
Remembering the sleepless nights caused by the sound of bouncing balls and the noises, I felt a burst of anger bubbling up like a storm. So I walked right up to the student’s house, and knocked on the door. I told him that it had to go. Instead of apologizing, he returned my anger in kind. “Who the hell are you ” he asked. “And what gives you the right to make such a ridiculous demand ”
His challenging gaze and aggressive tone added fuel to the flames of my anger. My sharp and cutting words hung in the air. I could feel the heat of my anger, and a red veil clouded my face.
The next day, I felt ashamed. Why didn’t other women get angry like me Why couldn’t I keep it altogether Why couldn’t I find some useful way to release the aggression
I thought of the cookies I had made recently — big, peanut butter chocolate cookies. I had made them to apologize to a friend. Some of the dough was still in the freezer. I hadn’t intended to save the cookie dough balls for future apologies. But it was handy to have them sitting there, waiting to make things right. I decided to bake the cookies and offer them to my neighbor as a peace gesture. As the cookies baked, the house was filled with a warm, inviting smell. I placed the cookies on a plate, took a deep breath, and walked across the street.

M: Speaking of Italian food, I visited several good restaurants during my vacation trip there last year. I can tell you about some of them.

A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Favorable.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31.

The door opened, and I was greeted by a pair of curious eyes. I forced a smile and held out the plate of cookies. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep yesterday. It’s just that memories of past disturbances made me react strongly,” I said softly, trying to convey my sincerity through my words and expression. He looked surprised at first, then he nodded slowly. “Yeah, I get it. College parties can be a bit much sometimes. And I’m sorry if I came off as rude. I guess I was on edge.”
We shared a smile, and I felt a weight lifted off my heart. In that moment, it seemed like the hostility from our last encounter had melted away, replaced by an unspoken agreement to try and coexist peacefully. “Maybe we can find a way to enjoy that table without disturbing everyone ” he suggested with a hopeful tone. I agreed wholeheartedly, feeling a sense of relief and community spirit rekindle within me. As we discussed possible solutions, I realized that sometimes a small act of kindness can go a long way in mending fences and bridging divides.
