One possible version:
Dear David,
Thank you for planning a celebration for our first prize in the English Song Contest. I surveyed all 50 classmates, and
the results are as follows: 50% prefer filming a group English song MV, 36% favor holding a small party, and 14% would
like to watch English music documentaries.
In my view, filming the MV should be our first choice. It not only preserves the joyful moments in a lasting way, but
also highlights our teamwork and creativity, which could even inspire other students. After the filming, we could still enjoy
a brief party with drinks and snacks so that everyone’s expectations are met.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
Emma pushed aside her fear and ran outside. Cold rain beat against her face, but she kept running, her shoes splashing
through shallow puddles as she searched for help. The streets were nearly empty because of the storm, and every second felt
painfully long. When she finally reached the convenience store two blocks away, she rushed inside and asked the clerk to
call an ambulance. The clerk immediately dialed the number, and Emma anxiously repeated the library’s address, hoping the
rescuers would arrive in time. She thanked the clerk before hurrying back into the storm.
After thanking the clerk, Emma returned from the convenience store. Her clothes were soaked again, but relief washed
over her when she saw the flashing lights of the ambulance already parked outside the library. The paramedics were lifting
Mr Harris onto a stretcher, working quickly and gently. Emma followed them, her heart tight with worry, until Mr Harris
opened his eyes and offered a faint smile. His whisper—soft but sincere—told her he would be all right. Watching the
ambulance leave, Emma felt a quiet warmth spreading through her, knowing that courage and kindness had lit up the
darkest moment.

M: Welcome to The Big Debate, everyone! I’m Eric.
W: Welcome! I’m Sally. We’re thrilled to have you tune in.
M: Last week, we posed a question to our listeners: Should shops stop selling bottled water We’ve received a flood of
responses from our listeners, and we’re excited to share some of their views today.
W: First, it’s Rebecca from Manchester. She wrote, “It’s shocking that only around 61% of plastic bottles are recycled in the
UK. The rest are thrown away. It takes about 450 years for a plastic bottle to break down in the earth. Single-use plastic
bottles are bad for the environment. Therefore, shops should stop selling bottled water.”
M: Jane from London held the opposite view. She mentioned she enjoyed the convenience of bottled water.
W: Allen from Leeds agreed with Jane. He also said without the convenience of plastic bottles, people would drink less
water and turn to unhealthy drinks instead.
M: True, but another listener Jasper noted that we have top-quality tap water in the UK. Boiled tap water is more
cost-effective than bottled water.
W: And George from Sheffield warned that some plastic bottles may contain harmful chemicals that might harm people’s
health...
Text 10
M: According to relationship experts, cutting ties with a close friend can be as painful as ending a marriage. Krystle Dullas,
a sales representative at a toy company, has been experiencing that pain recently. When Ms Dullas’ close friend left their
city for a long cross-country road trip in 2022, they promised to stay in touch. But as life got busier, their long telephone
conversations slowly disappeared. In January, when she saw on social media that her friend visited home without seeing her,
Ms Dullas felt confused and hurt. She asked her friend about the visit, but she only got a short and very cool reply. They
haven’t spoken since. “I felt as if I’d been casually abandoned by someone I’d been close to for nearly five years,” said Ms
Dullas. “Such break-ups represent an unrecognized kind of sadness,” said Beverley Fehr, a social psychologist. “If someone
goes through the death of a family member, there’s generally support for the person, or at least an acknowledgment of the
pain they are experiencing. That tends not to happen so much in friendships,” Dr. Fehr added. In some cases, ending a
friendship can bring peace of mind. Ellina Rabbat, a public servant in Vancouver, ended her on-again, off-again friendship
with Antonia last year. Telling Antonia directly that she didn’t wish to continue the unstable friendship was a great weight
off her shoulders. Whether you’re the one ending the friendship or experiencing its end, it’s important to treat yourself with
kindness.
