Food festivals are a common occurrence in the UK and take place in all sorts of places and at all sorts of times. Whatever your taste, there’s a food festival to match -no matter how specialized.
Meatopia
This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of meat products, from burgers to steaks, attendees can listen to live music, watch butchery shows, and attend informal meat-based workshops.
Vegfest
If you prefer a festival that will help you meet your five a day, then Vegfest fest is for you. This vegan-friendly event takes place several times a year. Here you can enjoy a wide selection of freshly prepared vegetables, learn cooking tips and hear talks on nutrition to help you make the most of your plant-based search.
The Marmalade Festival
Held in Cumbria, this festival has been running for 13 years. It includes a competition to find the best homemade marmalade. There are thousands of entries from over 30 different countries across the globe.
The Ginger (姜) and spice Festival
The Ginger and spice Festival, held in Market Drayton, celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. Because of this, they specialize in baking gingerbread, but also sell a range of spices from mild to hot.
The National Honey show
It started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind. This three-day event attracts over 2000 participants to their traditional competition, and offers lectures and workshops on beekeeping and, of course, that syrupy golden honey.
While people’s tastes are different from each other, the UK has something to offer most people. From large-scale festivities, to the smaller gatherings, one thing is certain: people are passionate about their food. And while some of the products on offer might be strange to someone, when food is given that much attention, it’s unlikely to leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth.

When she was young, Sylvia Colt- Lacayo noticed she was particularly fascinated with on- screen stories. Media offered an escape when life was hard.
Watching Glee, she was thrilled to see a character who used a wheelchair like her — until she learned the role was played by an actor who was not disabled. “I remember feeling so heartbroken and betrayed (背叛), for no reason other than the fact that I felt seen for once as a 10- year- old watching Glee, and the power of that,” says Colt- Lacayo.
Now, Colt- Lacayo is graduating from Stanford with a degree in film and media studies and is heading to Hollywood with a passion for increasing disability representation and diversity in general. “Representation matters, and I also think that diverse storytelling is what is most compelling (令人信服的),” she said.
Representation shaped Colt- Lacayo’s path to Stanford. As a disabled Latina girl, she struggled to imagine going to college, in part because she never saw adult wheelchair users in the media. In high school, she met- another Stanford student who was also a wheelchair user at a conference. Suddenly, a new story felt possible.
When she arrived at Stanford, Colt- Lacayo knew she was often the first visibly disabled student her professors and peers had interacted with. Her parents had taught her to advocate for herself, and while she doesn’t claim the label “activist”, she asks for what she needs.
“Yes, there’s something that is in my DNA that makes my body different from other people’s. But really, what makes me disabled is that people treat me differently, and I do not have equal access to resources,” she said.
She brought this perspective to her Stanford experience. For her senior thesis (论文), she wrote a screenplay examining how growing up with a disability impacts one’s relationship with oneself and one’s understanding of the world.
Colt- Lacayo aims to become an agent for screenwriters and film dire tors She hopes that sharing her story gives others the example she wished for when she was young.
4. How did Colt- Lacayo initially feel while watching Glee
A Overjoyed and inspired. B. Honored and confident.
C. Heartbroken and betrayed. D. Sorrowful and sympathetic.
5. What helped Colt- Lacayo picture herself going to college
A. Her keen interest in films and media.
B. Diverse stories she heard about disability.
C. An example of a disabled Stanford student.
D. A passion for increasing disability representation.
6. What insight did Colt- Lacayo gain about living with a disability
A. It naturally leads one to grow into a social activist.
B. It mainly involves overcoming physical limitations.
C. It offers special advantages for accessing resources.
D. It influences one’s outlook on the world and oneself.
7. What is the best title of the text
A. Telling Stories That Matter B. Speaking up for Equality
C. Struggling to Enter Stanford D. Conquering Physical Challenges
C
When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free. A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the emergency room for adverse (不利的) events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects. Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复). Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women — may be at greater risk. Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4. Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.
8. What does the author advise patients to do in Paragraph 2
A. To ask for suggestions from doctors. B. To buy medicines from hospitals.
C. To read the package ingredients of drugs. D. To take drugs as early as possible.
9. What’s the purpose of mentioning cold medicines in Paragraph 3
A. To provide a medical choice for people who catch a cold.
B. To show cold medicines are more likely to cause bad effects.
C. To explain OTC medicines often have more than one ingredient.
D. To stress the importance of learning about medicines’ ingredients.
10. What can we infer about older people in Paragraph 4
A. They can’t cope with aging positively. B. Their body can’t handle medicines easily.
C. They are more easily affected by diseases. D. Their desire for health makes them unwise.
11. What’s the best title for the passage
A Say No to OTC Drugs B. Tips on Taking OTC Drugs
C. OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe D. How to Deal with an OTC Drug Overdose
D
Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen in most colleges. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day and the students I used to see in there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work — it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it, and for good reason it not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit.
So how can students manage to study efficiently One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished = time spent×intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time.
12. Which of the following phenomenon is an example of pseudo-working
A. Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B. Alice and Sara are sitting on the sofa reading their favorite books.
C. Mike is sitting in the study room in preparation for a final exam quietly.
D. Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
13. What can be inferred from paragraph 3 and 4
A. Straight-A students believe some tasks are worth twice the effort.
B. Too much thinking may weaken the brain’s ability of the students.
C. Negative effects of pseudo-working are not fully realized by many students.
D. Students will get good grades once they realize that pseudo-working is ineffective.
14. What does the underlined word “optimal’ mean in paragraph 5
A. Longest. B. Best. C. Least. D. Effective.
15. Why does the author mention the formula in the text
A. To show the benefit of working hard.
B. To prove the necessity of accomplishing work.
C. To emphasize the importance of concentration.
D. To explain the reason for spending much time.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We certainly look different. The most obvious differences between boys and girls are our bodies, inside and out. For example, can men have babies Can women grow beards ___16___
In the 1800s, scientists developed a theory called craniology (头骨学), which said that intelligence could be measured by skull size. Men have bigger skulls than women. So men must be smarter, people thought. ___17___ No one encouraged them to go on in school. Some doctors even said women who went to college would no longer be able to have children! Of course, now we know these beliefs aren’t true.
In the 1950s, psychologists gave girls and boys science tests to see if they could tell who was smarter. On average, the girls did worse than the boys. ___18___ But is this really true Instead of measuring natural ability, maybe the tests revealed something about the conditions under which children were being taught. Parents and teachers didn't expect girls to do well in math or science, and so they didn’t encourage them. In class, teachers focused their attention on boys. ___19___
As scientists continue to investigate, they have discovered that boys do seem to be better than girls at something called spatial rotation (空间转动). Girls,on the other hand, do better on some tests of vocabulary and language. Why ___20___ They often give girls dolls to play with, while they more frequently give boys blocks. Playing with blocks helps children develop spatial skills. So without meaning to, adults might be helping boys develop better spatial skills. And maybe they talk to girls more, which helps girls with those vocabulary words.
A. But how different are we really
B. Therefore, women were treated differently.
C. This influenced how well boys learned and how poorly girls did.
D. If our bodies differ, what does that say about our intelligence and skills
E. Naturally, researchers concluded that boys are smarter than girls in science.
F. Studies have shown that parents treat boys and girls differently as soon as they’re born.
G. According to psychologists, girls were less intelligent than boys in many aspects.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】 AI Tutoring: Is It a Good or a Bad Idea
AI-assisted homework has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, AI tools provide instant explanations, help students understand difficult concepts, and save time. They can also personalize learning by adapting to individual needs.
However, over-reliance on AI may weaken critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Some students might use AI to complete assignments without truly learning, which harms academic integrity.
In my opinion, if we want to ensure students make real progress in learning, AI should be used as a supplementary tool, not a replacement for independent learning.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s eyes sparkled but responded doubtfully, “Can I... ” Mary and I immediately assured her that she could make it. In the following month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing.
