A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, D.C. Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me, sir ” Turning around, I saw an elderly, blind woman with her hand extended. I reached into my pocket, pulled out all my loose change, and placed it on her hand without looking at her, annoyed at being bothered by her.
But the woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help in finding the post office.” Instantly, I realized I had acted with prejudice (偏见) — I judged another person simply by my assumption. I felt embarrassed as I gently took her arm to guide her, and I wished I could change my quick decision.
I hated what I saw in myself. This incident made me think about my belief in humility (谦逊), even though I’d lost it for a moment.
I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in the US at the age of fifteen. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong mother. Through the years, I have been a dishwasher and have done many other humble jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer.
In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice. I remember a time at the age of seventeen. I was a busboy (收盘工) and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. I have also witnessed the same kind of treatment toward my family and friends, so I know what it’s like. I should have known better when I encountered the blind woman.
But now, living in my middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past and where I want to go. That blind woman cured me to keep my blindness, reminding me to keep my belief in humility and always keep my eyes and heart open.
24.Why did the blind woman speak to the author
A.To ask for directions. B.To beg for some money.
C.To know about prejudice. D.To comment on humility.
25.What was the author’s life like in America at first
A.Lonely. B.Quiet. C.Wonderful. D.Difficult.
26.What does the author’s story mainly teach us
A.To assist elderly people. B.To fight against challenges.
C.To overcome personal prejudice. D.To learn to be independent.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.A Priceless Lesson in Humility B.From Dishwasher to Network Engineer
C.My Unforgettable Painful Experiences D.American People’s Prejudice Against Me
City Wildlife is a wildlife rescue center. It is in an ordinary building between a garden and a train line. Inside, many baby squirrels (松鼠) live in cages. It is warm in the room, and a machine plays sounds. Some squirrels sleep in small beds together, while others hold onto the cages and look outside.
Spring is the time when many animals have babies. This is also the busiest time for the center. Workers here spend a lot of time feeding baby squirrels by hand. To tell the squirrels apart, they paint the squirrels’ ears in different colors. Alessandra Flores, one of the workers, picks up a squirrel with pink ears. She feeds it special milk with a small syringe (注射器).
The squirrels come to the center for different reasons. Some fall from their nests, some lose their mothers, and some are hurt by cars. Squirrels are very common in North America, so some people ask why we help them. Jim Monsma, the director of the center, says, “It is not only about animals. Helping small, helpless squirrels helps people become more kind and caring.”
Many wildlife rescue centers like this one can be found across the USA.They help all kinds of animals in trouble. These centers often depend on volunteers. Julie Edwards is one of them. She looks after a very active squirrel that might try to run away. Edwards says every animal has its own character. She started helping at a center in Texas because her husband did not want her to bring home dogs or cats from an animal shelter. At the wildlife rescue center, she cannot take animals home.
Most animals need help because of cities built by people. Roads, cars, and other things make life easier for people but harder for animals. Every day is full of danger for them. That is why the center is needed.
28.What is the living condition of the squirrels in City Wildlife
A.Poor. B.Basic.
C.Comfortable. D.Unique.
29.What is Jim Monsma’s attitude to rescuing squirrels
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive.
C.Unfriendly. D.Cautious.
30.Why did Julie Edwards choose to work in the wildlife rescue center
A.She loved feeding squirrels.
B.She wanted to take animals home.
C.Her husband disliked keeping pets at home.
D.Her husband had kept many dogs and cats.
31.What does the last paragraph imply about cities
A.They should be smaller in size.
B.They help both people and wildlife.
C.They provide safe homes for animals.
D.They make some animals’ lives difficult.
Scientists have found a new genetic reason why some people are more likely to be overweight. A study led by the University of Exeter shows that people with a missing gene called SMIM1 burn fewer calories when resting, leading to higher body weight.
The SMIM1 gene was discovered only ten years ago and is linked to a rare blood type called Vel. About 1 in 5,000 people lack both copies of this gene, making them Vel-negative. These individuals not only have a different blood type but also tend to gain weight more easily. The research found that they often show other signs linked to obesity (肥胖), such as higher levels of fat in the blood, signs that their fat tissue (组织) is not working properly, and lower levels of thyroid (甲状腺) hormones.
The study, published in the journal Med, used genetic data from nearly 500,000 people in the UK. Among them, 104 were found to lack the SMIM1 gene. On average, women with this genetic change weighed about 4.6 kg more, and men about 2.4 kg more. Researchers say that this gene aberration could be a significant factor contributing to obesity in about 300,000 people worldwide.
More importantly, the study offers hope for future treatment. Scientists now plan to test whether an existing, low-cost, and widely available thyroid medicine could help people who lack the SMIM1 gene to manage their weight. They hope to start a medical trial soon to see if the drug is effective.
“Obesity has become a major global health problem,” said Mattia Frontini, the lead researcher. “While lifestyle plays a big role, for a small number of people, genes are the main cause. Finding these genetic reasons helps us look for better treatments. It also helps reduce unfair social judgment toward people with obesity.”
The discovery teaches us that obesity is often not a simple choice. By studying genes like SMIM1, science may one day provide more personalized and effective help for those who struggle with weight due to their DNA.
32.What is the main effect of missing the SMIM1 gene according to the study
A.It makes fat tissue work better.
B.It makes people gain weight easily.
C.It causes people to eat more food.
D.It changes a person’s blood type.
33.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2
A.Introduce a new topic.
B.Give more examples.
C.Add more background.
D.Explain different reasons.
34.Which can explain the underlined word “aberration” in paragraph 3
A.Unusual change. B.Common features.
C.Healthy condition. D.New experiments.
35.What is the significance of this discovery
A.It helps find more fat people.
B.It proves lifestyle is not important.
C.It fully explains the cause of obesity.
D.It may lead to new treatments for obesity.
How to Spend Less Time on Social Media
Some people find that social media is no longer fun or useful. 36 But it can be hard to break the habit of checking these apps every day, because we are used to them and the companies make quitting difficult. This is why you need some good ways to help you change.
You can start by making social networks harder to use. 37 Better yet, delete (删除) the app completely. On a computer, log out of your accounts. Then, you must enter your name and password each time you want to log in. This extra step helps you think twice before wasting time.
38 Some apps can stop you from opening certain websites or programs on your computer or phone. These tools can help you build good habits over time. They help you stay away from social media by making it harder to reach.
Another good idea is to replace your social media habit with a better one. When you feel like opening an app, do something else instead. You could read interesting articles, listen to music, or talk with friends face to face. 39
At first, it might feel strange not to check your phone as often. But soon, you may start to notice more free time in your day. You could use this time to relax, talk with family, or just enjoy the quiet. 40
A.Do not share your life online.
B.You should avoid checking your messages.
C.This small step can help you feel much happier.
D.It often makes them feel angry instead of happy.
E.Playing a game for a few minutes is also a fun choice.
F.Try removing the app from your phone’s home screen.
G.If that does not work, you can use apps to block social media.

The school announced the annual speech competition. Susan read the notice with interest, but never thought it had anything to do with her. So, it came as a complete surprise when her English teacher, Mrs. Evans, approached her. “Susan,” she said with an encouraging smile, “I’ve signed you up for the competition. I’ve read your essays, and you have such unique thoughts. It’s time to let your voice be heard.”
Susan felt a mix of excitement and fear. She was a naturally quiet and thoughtful girl who preferred to pour out her thoughts in her notebook rather than express them in front of others. She would often observe others with her large eyes, and her mind was filled with stories and dreams she seldom shared. As for the speech topic “My Dream for a Better World”, she had so many ideas to share, but the thought of making a mistake in front of people seemed unbearably embarrassing to her.
Seeing her worry, Susan’s older sister put a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Everyone feels nervous at first,” she said warmly. She didn’t tell Susan to win; instead, she said, “The goal isn’t to be perfect. It’s to be brave enough to try. Just do your best, and that will always be good enough.” Her sister promised to listen to her practice every day, offering a safe space to make mistakes and improve.
Encouraged by this support, Susan began to prepare seriously. She spent hours each day in her room, standing in front of her mirror. She practiced her speech over and over again, listening carefully to her own voice. She worked on making her pronunciation clearer and her voice stronger. She watched herself in the mirror, adding hand gestures and smiles at the right moments. She even recorded herself to find parts that needed more work. Slowly, the words started to feel natural, as if they were her own thoughts and not just a memorized text.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

【原文】 W: Good evening. You are listening to Pop World of BCD International. I’m Susan Welch. Well, first, I would like to say a few words to my dearest listeners who are not very familiar with this program. Since many people want to listen to and learn about pop songs, radio producers at BCD International have made hundreds of programs over the years. We not only have access to the stars of the music world, but also have a large library of “golden oldie” classics, as well as the “latest releases”. For those of you who like a bit of background with your favorite music, there’s the History of Pop or the Road to Music. If you want to hear from the artists themselves, there’s a new series called About the Big Hits. This is based on interviews with popular singers and songwriters. They talk to us about the meanings and ideas behind songs. If you want to understand the words to the big music hits, the Pop Words is the program for you. After all, it’s hard enough for nonnative English speakers to understand most pop songs.

A Story Between My Friends and Me
Last term, I messed up my physics exam and was buried in deep frustration, refusing to share my feelings with others. It was my close friend Lily who spotted my distress. She not only listened to me patiently but also teamed up with me to review key knowledge every evening. Thanks to her sincere assistance, I rebuilt my confidence and achieved a satisfying score in the next exam.
This unforgettable experience enables me to realize that genuine friendship is an invaluable treasure. It can light up our way when we are stuck in the dark, and we should cherish and reciprocate such precious bonds forever.
67. The day of the competition arrived. The school hall was packed with students and teachers, and the air was thick with nervous excitement. Susan sat backstage, her hands slightly trembling as she recited her speech silently. When she heard her name called, her heart skipped a beat. She took a deep breath, remembering her sister’s words — “Be brave enough to try”. As she walked onto the stage, she spotted her sister in the front row, giving her a big thumb-up. That small gesture filled her with strength, calming her nerves.
Then, Susan delivered her speech confidently. Her voice was clear and steady as she shared her dreams of a kinder, greener world — of helping those in need and protecting the environment. She used the hand gestures she’d practiced, her eyes scanning the audience warmly. When she finished, the hall erupted in loud applause. Mrs. Evans nodded at her with pride, and her sister rushed over to hug her tightly. “You were amazing!” her sister cheered. Susan smiled, realizing that bravery, not perfection, was the true victory. She’d finally found her voice.
