Dear Jasper,
I’m glad you’re interested in the biodiversity research I introduced in the 3-minute Science Speech Activity! You asked about our challenges and solutions, so here’s my share.
We focused on urban insect biodiversity and faced three main issues: tricky insect collection in busy areas, difficulty preserving delicate specimens without damage, and limited observation with traditional tools. Luckily, the local museum helped. Its scientists taught us professional collection methods and lab techniques for specimen preparation. Most importantly, the museum provided access to its valuable insect collections and new digital technologies, which allowed us to study these tiny creatures in more visible ways.
This experience deepened my interest in biodiversity. Should you want to know more, don’t hesitate to ask.
Yours,
Li Hua

Getting to Know the Plants Around Us

Getting to Know the Plants Around Us
Last weekend, I participated in a “Getting to Know the Plants Around Us” activity organised by our Students’ Union.
The activity began with a lecture by a local botanist, who taught us about the different characteristics and uses of various plant species. We then went on a natural walk to observe and collect samples of different plants.Throughout the event, I was struck by the incredible variety of plants that exist in our world and learned about plants that are used for medical purposes, as well as those that provide food and shelter for animals. I also gained a greater appreciation for the role that plants play in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. Overall, it was a valuable and enriching experience.

Glad to know that you take an interest in my biodiversity research, I'm writing to share with you more details about the challenges and solutions.
One of the biggest challenges I encountered was choosing an effective and efficient research method due to the complexity of observing so many species in different environments. However, after extensive discussions with my biology teacher and reading a wide range of papers, I decided to combine field studies with laboratory experiments, which turned out to work very well. Once that was settled, I thought I could finally get relieved for a while when another issue emerged -- the unpredictable weather conditions in Hangzhou during the summer and autumn, especially with typhoons, often disrupted my fieldwork. Luckily, the scientists and environmental organizations invited by our school were a huge help. They provided additional data, updated the real-time conditions, and offered useful insight to improve my research.
This is the behind-the-scene story for my presentation at the“3-minute Science Speech Activity", and I hope it can offer you some interesting perspectives.
Dear Jasper,
I'm glad that you thought my presentation on biodiversity research at “3-minute Science Speech Activity" interesting. It's been a really cool project, and filled with challenges.
The biggest problem I encountered was the limited experimental conditions and equipment, making it difficult to analyse the data l collected. To address this issue, I sought help from my biology teacher, who was incredibly helpful with several alternative methods for data analysis. Then, I adopted a creative approach, computer modeling, to estimate the impact of different environmental variables on species diversity and distribution within a specific ecosystem.
As you can see, it wasn't plain sailing, but I worked it out eventually. Isn't that what science is all about
Yours,
Li Hua
