With the world’s longest high-speed rail network and new record-breaking bullet trains, China is reshaping how travelers explore this vast nation.
The Xiamen — Fuzhou Railway
From Xiamen, you can travel inland to explore Fujian’s Tulou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of huge, circular houses made of earth and wood, some more than 700 years old. With more time, extend the journey on an additional four-hour hop to the provincial capital, Fuzhou, known for its hot springs and ancient alleyways, like Sanfang Qixiang, whose layout and wooden architecture go back as far as the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE).
The Kunming — Shangri-la Railway
Starting from Kunming, the journey can be done as a series of stops at towns like Dali and Lijiang, both known for their ancient architecture and minority cultures, or you can speed straight through to its last stop in about five hours: Shangri-la.
The Lanzhou — Dunhuang Railway
Stretching across the northwest deserts in Gansu Province this high-speed journey follows the camel trails that were used for centuries to trade silk, spices, and philosophy. Today, starting in Lanzhou, the train sails through the Hexi Corridor, through Zhangye with its colorful Rainbow Hills, Wuwei, where the famous Flying Horse of Gansu was uncovered, and Jiayuguan, the western end of the Great Wall, before finally arriving in Dunhuang, home to the Mogao Caves.
The Qinghai — Tibet Railway
Technically the only non-high-speed train on this list, the Qinghai — Tibet Railway is an engineering wonder built on the challenging land. Starting in Xining, the provincial capital of Qinghai Province, this overnight journey first passes the blue waters of the Qinghai Lake before crossing the Tibetan Plateau (where you might spot antelope and other wildlife), and up into the Himalayas, arriving the next morning in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.
1. Where is Sanfang Qixiang
A. In Xiamen. B. In Kunming. C. In Fuzhou. D. In Lijiang.
2. What can visitors see in Wuwei
A. The Rainbow Hills. B. The Flying Horse.
C. The Mogao Caves. D. The Great Wall.
3. What is unique about the Qinghai — Tibet Railway

Seventeen-year-old Abby Yoon is determined to help children lead healthier lives through proper nutrition and physical activity. In America, 14% of children do not get more than one meal a day, and many urban families live in food deserts, where the access to fresh food is limited. Yoon saw the need to address this issue and founded the Sustainable Hunger Initiative, focusing on providing healthy food and educating communities about nutrition.
One of Yoon’s first projects was a community garden. This garden has produced over 3,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, which have been donated to local family centers and soup kitchens. Yoon believes that growing your own food fosters a closer connection to what you eat, while ensuring access to essential nutrients. Additionally, her group has cooperated with local farmers and ranchers to donate more than 45,000 pounds of locally raised beef to those in need. To complement the food donations, Yoon also offers cooking and nutrition demonstrations, teaching people how to prepare healthy meals.
Yoon’s vision goes beyond providing food; she wants to empower communities to become selfsufficient. “The community garden can serve as a medium for nutrition education,” Yoon says. Her initiative encourages others to start their own gardens and learn about sustainable food practices.
Recognizing that a healthy lifestyle also includes physical exercise, Yoon has included a fitness program in her initiative. Many children in urban areas lack opportunities to play outside, so Yoon’s organization has donated over 600 bicycles and manages fitness programs for more than 7,500 children.
Yoon’s efforts have inspired others to join her cause. So far, over 10,000 volunteers have contributed their time to the community garden. What started as a dream for one teenager has blossomed into a movement that is making a real difference in people’s lives, proving that one person truly can inspire change.
4. What motivated Yoon to start the Sustainable Hunger Initiative
A. The support from local farmers and ranchers.
B. The desire to provide physical exercise for kids.
C. The shortage of fresh food in many urban areas.
D. The interest in teaching others to cook healthy meals.
5. What does Yoon think about growing food
A. It teaches children to lead independent lives.
B. It helps people connect with the food they eat.
C. It allows communities to have fun while exercising.
D. It inspires people to donate more to soup kitchens.
6. What other support does Yoon’s initiative provide besides food
A. Presenting how to cook and what nutrition is.
B. Building new fitness centers in urban areas.
C. Providing financial assistance to local farmers.
D. Organizing school meal programs for children.
7. What can be learned about the success of Yoon’s projects
A. It has expanded around the world.
B. It has helped kids do better in school.
C. It has offered jobs for over 10,000 people.
D. It has encouraged more people to help the communities.

A little-known Chinese AI company, DeepSeek, has disrupted years of U. S. policies aimed at limiting China’s tech growth by releasing an advanced AI model without relying on U. S. semiconductors. This achievement challenged the belief that top-tier hardware is essential for AI development. Central to this story is Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek’s 40-year-old founder.
In 2013, Liang and his classmates launched Yakebi, a firm to commercialize data-driven investment models, which later evolved into High-Flyer, a quantitative hedge fund (对冲基金) that grew rapidly during China’s market deregulation. By 2021, High-Flyer managed $14 billion but faced regulatory check for profiting from market crashes.
DeepSeek originated from High-Flyer’s efforts to improve its algorithms. After spinning off as an independent company in 2023, DeepSeek shocked the market in May 2024 by releasing a chatbot priced 99% lower than rivals, triggering a price war that forced Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent to slash prices. Liang insisted this was not a user-acquisition strategy but a result of innovative model designs that reduced costs.
While most Chinese AI firms rely on Meta’s open-source Llama models due to computing limitations, DeepSeek claims its R1 model — trained for under $6 million compared to OpenAI’s $100million budgets — achieves similar performance through efficient architecture. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called R1 “impressive” but dismissed it as a temporary challenge. Skeptics question whether DeepSeek underreported chip usage, a claim OpenAI says it has evidence for. If DeepSeek’s efficiency claims hold, it weakens both U. S. tech dominance and China’s state-led innovation model.
In summary, the success of DeepSeek has proved that it had broken traditional limitations and created what could become a new path for collaborative advancement despite facing western restrictions in terms of advanced semiconductor technologies. State media now praises DeepSeek as a “national treasure”, and Liang met China’s premier in January 2025.
8. What is the writing purpose of the article
A. To criticize U. S. export restrictions. B. To discuss the U. S.-China competition.
C. To introduce a new Chinese company. D. To illustrate AI models’ impact.
9. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true
A. High-Flyer faced regulatory checks because of its rapid development.
B. DeepSeek’s chatbot release led to its rivals cutting their prices.
C. The performance of DeepSeek’s R1 model matched that of OpenAI at a similar cost.
D. DeepSeek was praised by China’s premier as a “national treasure”.
10. The underlined words in Paragraph 4 probably refer to DeepSeek’s ______.
A. inaccurately using their chips B. intentionally attacking their competitors
C. cautiously adjusting their AI model’s design D. secretly using more resources than they admit
11. What do we know from DeepSeek’s success
A. Chinese government should invest more in DeepSeek.
B. Cooperation is crucial for achieving success.
C. Following Western technology is the faster path to innovation.
D. Chinese tech companies will dominate future AI research.

Driving to a meeting at the Calgary Construction Association, I relaxed to CBC Radio, eager for non-construction news. I heard an interview with Elaine, who’d taught Chicago’s cast to sing and was selling a new singing-lesson CD. Having just been “fired” from my husband’s band for not taking singing seriously, I thought I should buy it.
Two years later, on a lunch break, I finally decided to look online and buy the CD. It turned out Elaine Overholt was coming to Calgary that weekend!
On Saturday morning, I arrived at the Cantos Music Centre with 60 strangers. After we settled in, Elaine arrived to enthusiastic applause. The morning involved vocal (发声的) exercises: controlled breathing, mouth stretches, and sounds like “Maw-meee-mee-mee.”
Then came individual performances in front of the entire group. Nervous, I watched others perform. The first woman went up and sang with a high, trembling voice — unlike her natural tone. I started fooling myself: I could do this. Elaine gave her helpful advice and the woman thanked her before stepping down. The next student stepped up and opened her mouth. She was great! Could be Celine Dion in disguise. When she stopped singing like an angel, I made my move to sneak away.
“Nope!” Elaine yelled from the stage, pointing directly at me. I sank into my chair. She asked my preferred key. “The lowest possible,” I requested. She played a note, and I sang her song about rainbows, instantly realizing it was too high. By the end, only dogs could hear me. Elaine said, “You really made that your own,” and talked about “key choice” and “breath control”.
As I left the stage, the crowd surprised me. A man shook my hand, grinning, “You just inspired me to try!” Another woman hugged me, “Your courage moved me.” Their warmth transformed my embarrassment into pride — I hadn’t sung perfectly, but I’d sung truly. And that mattered most.
12. Why did the author want to buy Elaine’s CD
A. To prepare for a meeting. B. To better her singing.
C. To explore vocal coaching. D. To join her husband’s band.
13. How did the author feel after the first woman’s performance
A. Secure and confident. B. Anxious and doubtful.
C. Amused and entertained. D. Lost and embarrassed.
14. Why did the author try to leave before her turn
A. She found the activity a little boring.
B. She worried about not finding the right key.
C. She felt discouraged after hearing an excellent singer.
D. She didn’t like performing in front of too many people.
15. How did others react to the author’s performance
A. They appreciated her courage. B. They offered her further guidance.
C. They were impressed by her voice. D. They encouraged her to sing more.

Studying abroad in Canada, I never thought that the small chopsticks would become a unique barrier in my cross-cultural adaptation.
For a Chinese student, using chopsticks to eat is the most natural thing. But here, every time I ate in the cafeteria and skillfully picked up food with chopsticks, the foreign classmates around me always cast curious and slightly confused looks, and from time to time, there were whispers: “How do they do that ” At first, I would smile and briefly explain how to use chopsticks to them. But as the number of times increased, the sense of strangeness brought about by cultural differences gradually made me feel uncomfortable. Even for a moment, I hesitated to switch to a knife and fork to eat in order to fit in.
During a group dinner, everyone sat around the restaurant. I habitually reached out for chopsticks. Jack, who was in the same group, saw this and exclaimed excitedly: “Hey, let’s see your magic with chopsticks!” As he spoke, he also picked up a pair of chopsticks and clumsily imitated. But before he could pick up anything, the chopsticks slipped from his hand. The other classmates laughed, and my face burned. I lowered my head to eat awkwardly, but my heart was in a mess. I realized that in their eyes, chopsticks were just a novel “performance prop (道具)”, and I, as a “foreigner” using chopsticks, seemed to have become an object of observation.
After that, when facing others’ curiosity about chopsticks, I lost the initial enthusiasm to share and just casually smiled. I was afraid of this excessive attention, afraid that my cultural habits would become an “outsider label” in the eyes of others. I even began to deliberately reduce the number of times I used chopsticks in public, trying to make myself “fit in” with the local dining style.
