Modals
To master some modal verbs and use them correctly

Now talk about the function of modals. Then match the meanings to the words in red above.

情态动词本身具有一定的词义,不能独立作谓语,必须和动词原形一起构成谓语。
常用的情态动词包括can (could), may (might), shall (should), will (would), dare, need, must, had better, used to, have to, ought to等。
本单元主要涉及的情态动词有be able to, dare, have to, had better, need。
情态动词 (Modals)
be able to do sth. 有能力做某事,可用于大多数时态
was / were able to do sth. 过去或当时成功地做了某事
e.g. I will be able to speak Japanese in another few months. 再过几个月,我就能讲日语了。
They were able to escape from the building when the fire broke out.
火灾发生时,他们设法从那栋建筑里逃了出去。

只有现在式、过去式 各种形式
表示“自身具有的能力” 多指“后天努力所获得的能力;”“将来的能力(will be able to)”
could do sth = had the ability to do sth was / were able to do sth
= managed to do sth
二者都表示“能力”,可以互换使用,但也有细微区别:
She could play the piano when she was only six.
He was able to translate the article without a dictionary.

2) dare & need
A. dare 作情态动词时,主要用于否定句、疑问句和条件从句中,一般不用在肯定句中。
e.g. How dare you say I’m unfair
你怎么敢说我不公平?
B. need 作情态动词时,用于否定句或疑问句中,在肯定句中一般用must, have to, ought to 或should代替。
e.g. You needn’t come so early.
你不用这么早来。
C. dare实义动词,有时态、人称和数的变化。
在肯定句中,dare to do sth;
在否定句和疑问句中,“to”可以省略。
e.g. I dare to swim across this river.
我敢游过河去。
He does not dare (to) answer.
他不敢回答。
D. need 作实义动词,有人称和数的变化;
sb. need(s) to do sth. 某人需要做某事
sth. need (s) doing/to be done 某事/物需要被……
e.g. He needs to earn more to support such a large family.
他需要赚更多的钱来支持这一大家子的生活。
This shirt needs washing.
= This shirt needs to be washed.
这件衬衫该洗了。
以need开头的一般疑问句,否定回答用__________,肯定回答用__________;
以must开头的一般疑问句,肯定回答用__________, 否定回答用___________________。

3) have to (不得不) 与must相似,可以互换使用,但have to有各种时态,且强调客观需要,否定式为don’t have to。
e.g. I have to leave because of the bad weather.

4) had better do sth 最好做某事
用于现在时或将来时,可用于一切人称,没有词形变化。
否定式:had better not do sth

She had better not tell lies any more.
她最好再也别撒谎了。
