Black Friday, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, is the day after Thanksgiving Day and the Friday before Cyber Monday in the United States.
Black Friday is one of the busiest shopping days in the USA. There are two popular theories as to why the day after Thanksgiving Day is called Black Friday. One theory is that the wheels of vehicles in heavy traffic on the day left many black markings on the road surface, leading to the term Black Friday.
The other theory is that the term Black Friday comes from an old way of recording business accounts. Losses were recorded in red ink and profits in black ink. Many businesses, particularly small businesses, started making profits on the day, which were marked in black ink.
On Black Friday, most stores open their doors quite early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts (折扣). Some goods like TVs and clothes are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these goods. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
