The marathon is a long-distance running race of about 42 kilometres. The event was set up in memory of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, who ran to deliver a message of victory from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens. The marathon became one of the modern Olympic events in 1896. A half marathon is a road running event of about 21 kilometres — half the distance of a marathon.
