Dream of the Red Chamber
Dream of the Red Chamber, also called The Story of the Stone, written by Cao Xueqin, is one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. It was written during the Qing Dynasty. The novel is generally considered to be the greatest of all Chinese novels and among the greatest in world literature.
The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is a 1952 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Set in the Jazz Age of the 1920s, the story primarily concerns the young and mysterious (神秘的) millionaire Jay Gatsby and his passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. As the narrative progresses, it shows Gatsby’s rise from humble origins to immense wealth, all in a quest to win back Daisy, his first love.
Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes is a fictional consulting (提供咨询的) detective in London created by Scottish author and
physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is known for his proficiency (熟练) with observation, forensic (法医的) science, and logical reasoning. Together with his assistant, Dr John H. Watson, he pursues criminals throughout London, the south of England, and continental Europe.
Rickshaw Boy
Written by Lao She, Rickshaw Boy is considered by many to be one of the masterpieces of modern Chinese
literature. It describes the difficult life of a
rickshaw puller during the years of warlord (军阀)
turmoil (混乱). This book is famous for its vivid
descriptions of life in the city of Beijing in
the beginning of the 20th century.
The True Story of Ah Q
The true Story of Ah Q is a short novel by Lu Xun. The story is set in the early 1900s and follows Ah Q, a peasant living in a small village. Through Ah Q’s life and the people he meets, Lu Xun explores the social and political problems of that time. The novel remains an importatnt piece of literature that comments on human nature and society.
