It was not always Darrius Peace’s plan to pursue a career as a stylist. Back in the day more than 25 years ago, when he was a college student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, his ambition was to work as a Spanish teacher. However, Peace faced a tricky issue: There was no one on campus who could help him braid (编) his hair. Therefore, he made up his mind to figure out how to do the braiding by himself.
“This was in the 90s, so there were no social platforms like YouTube,” Peace said.“ There was no online resource that could help me learn how to do it. And so that was when I just took matters into my own hands and practiced braiding my hair. And eventually I got it.”
Today, Peace, well-known for working with all hair types: straight, curly, coiled, wavy, owns a salon in Birmingham called Hayah Beauty. “I had no idea that I was creating a method or an approach to styling hair,” Peace explains. “I was just creating a means to an end, which was, I wanted to be able to braid my hair. When I integrated that into what I formally learned in the beauty school — how to straighten hair, how to cut hair, how to color hair, how to chemically treat hair in different ways — I was able to really marry those techniques to create what I call the Darrius Peace Method.”
Given his strong reputation, Peace has been invited to work as a stylist on many movie sets. He considers it a major learning experience, because it’s very different from salon work. Since filming can take months, the stylist has to ensure a character’s hair looks exactly the same whenever it’s filmed. “You may be working on that same exact hairstyle for six months, depending on how long the project is going,” Peace says.“And the difficult thing is making sure that you maintain and preserve a certain continuity with that look.”
24. What was Peace’s original career goal
A. To teach Spanish. B. To be a stylist.
C. To run a salon. D. To work in movies.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss regarding Peace
A. The growth of his Hayah Beauty. B. The process of his hair braiding.
C. The birth of his hairstyleing approach. D. The importance of his formal training.
26. What is the challenge for Peace while on a film or TV set
A. Making fashionable hairstyles. B. Practicing strict time management.
C. Keeping the hairstyle consistent. D. Showing good communication skills.
27 Which word best describes Peace as a stylist
A. Easy-going. B. Well-received.
C. Strong-willed. D. Free-spirited.

According to a new research, cutting off rhinos’ horns (犀牛角) reduces illegal hunting of the animals by nearly 80%. Rhinos are hunted for their horns, and scientists think there are now fewer than 28,000 rhinos left in the world.
A team of researchers studied different rhino protection methods used in Greater Kruger NationalPark, South Africa, between 2017 and 2023. About 25% of Africa’s rhino population lives in GreaterKruger, and the researchers wanted to find out which methods worked well.
The protection methods they studied included using detection cameras, tracking dogs, helicopters, and rangers (护林员) to keep an eye out for illegal hunters. More than 700 illegal hunters were arrested, but the researchers found that arresting the illegal hunters didn’t significantly reduce the number of rhinos that were killed.
Another method that is being used to protect the rhinos is to cut off their horns, which is called “dehorning”. This doesn’t hurt the animals because their horns are made of keratin, the same substance that makes up human hair and fingernails. That is, the horns can grow back over time, so the average rhino needs to be dehorned every 18 months to two years. The researchers found that dehorning reduced hunting by 78%.
While dehorning rhinos can save the animals’ lives, another study discovered that the method changes their behavior. It found that dehorned rhinos are less likely to get involved in social interactions with other rhinos, and the area they choose to cover as they move around is much smaller. Scientists think that because rhinos use their horns in battles to protect their territory, without a horn they may become more cautious (谨慎的) and avoid conflicts.
Researcher Tim Kuiper from Nelson Mandela University in South Africa told The Guardian newspaper that dehorning rhinos shouldn’t be the long-term solution. Ultimately, conservationists want to address the causes of illegal hunting.
28. What is the main goal of the research in Greater Kruger National Park
A. To seek for best rhino protection ways.
B. To calculate the global rhino population.
C. To explain why hunters want rhino horns.
D. To analyze rhinos’ social habits in the wild.
29. Why is dehorning harmless to rhinos
A. Their horns are renewable. B. Experts perform their dehorning.
C. Their horns are inconvenient for growth. D. They can still defend themselves without horns.
30. How does dehorning influence rhinos’ behavior
A. They no longer care about their territory.
B. They become more fierce to fight enemies.
C. They often stay with other rhinos for safety.
D. They reduce their social contact and moving range.
31. Which is the best title for the text
A. Research: a key to effective rhino protection
B. Illegal hunting: a big threat facing wild rhinos
C. Rangers: an important force against rhino hunting
D. Dehorning: a double-edged measure for rhino protection
D
Digital systems are becoming increasingly fixed in daily life, particularly in China, where they are reshaping how people live, feel and relate to one another. This digital transformation is not only a technological revolution but also a rearrangement of social relations and cultural values.
Technologies designed for elderly care, companionship and emotional support already show how digital systems are modifying daily life. Such technologies do far more than assist with routine tasks. They influence how people experience warmth, attention and connection in a world where presence can be virtual and relationships are increasingly brought about by algorithms (算法). The central question is no longer how to improve devices through technical efficiency or economic growth, but how these systems transform closeness, care and the social bonds that sustain communities.
Scholars and policymakers are exploring different ways to understand and guide this transformation. One approach draws on traditional ideas and values, which emphasize harmony, balance and mutual responsibility. For instance, researchers are examining how artificial intelligence systems might be designed to reflect moral principles consistent with established cultural standards.
Another approach builds on these traditions but moves in a more open and exploratory direction. It emphasizes responsiveness and attentiveness to the changes that new systems generate — how they reshape habits, emotions and social structures in ways that cannot be fully controlled. Researchers in this line of inquiry study, for example, how the introduction of artificial intelligence alters the meaning of work, care or closeness the moment machines begin to perform tasks once considered uniquely human.
This openness to the unforeseen effects of technology extends well beyond the laboratory. Throughout China, interdisciplinary collaborations are growing, bringing together philosophers, engineers, designers and science-fiction scholars to explore how society may evolve in response to technological change. Researchers across the country are forming dynamic networks that unite these diverse fields.
Their efforts emphasize the importance of placing the human being at the center of technological innovation. By integrating warmth and empathy into technological design, they ensure that innovation serves the human spirit, not just functionality.
32. What characterizes digital elderly care tech
A. Priority to economic benefits. B. Main focus on daily cleaning.
C. Impact on emotional experiences. D. Replacement of human company.
33. What does the underlined word “modifying” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Changing. B. Destroying. C. Protecting. D. Ignoring.
34. What is key to the second approach
A. Control of all social changes. B. Preference for tech over humans.
C. Consistency with traditional values. D. Response to unexpected tech effects.
35. Why do interdisciplinary teams cooperate in China
A. To design efficient devices. B. To promote global tech exchange.
C. To increase AI’s commercial value. D. To study society’s adaptation to tech.

When it comes to purchasing groceries, consumers feel the pain of both increasing prices and pollution. Here, we explain ways to make your money go further while walking gently on the planet.
____36____. Meal planning may be the best way to keep food and single-use plastics out of landfills (垃圾填埋场). Knowing which foods you want to prepare can ensure you have the ingredients you need to make meals you love and use what you’ve already bought before it goes bad. ____37____. Planning meals also allows you to spend less time in the kitchen considering the combination of ingredients.
Make a list and stick to it. Now that you know which foods you have to work with, fill in the gaps with a grocery list. Shopping this way reduces the urge for purchases that might not fit into your plan and wind up (right alongside your money) in the dump. Consider making the list accessible to everyone in your household. ____38____.
Shop local. The rising price of fuel has made food transportation more expensive. But locally grown food doesn’t have to travel as far. ____39____. Most farmers’ markets now accept WIC, EBT, and SNAP benefits so people of all income levels can access locally grown foods. Shopping local also gives you an opportunity to eat seasonally.
Go to an actual store. ____40____. But shopping in person allows you to take advantage of sales and highly underestimated discounts. Buying fruits and vegetables (bonus points for ugly produce), baked goods, and shelfed foods off the clearance rack (清仓) keeps that eatable goodness out of the landfill and saves you money. Don’t forget to bring your reusable bags!

Modern technology is very important for protecting, digging up and studying the Liangzhu Archaeological (考古) Ruins in Zhejiang Province. A recent big discovery here shows this clearly — archaeologists found ____56____ wall-like structure outside the ancient city.
Archaeologists say it might be a royal mausoleum (陵墓). If true, it could be one of China’s ____57____ (early) royal burial sites and make the country’s mausoleum history thousands of years older. This discovery mostly comes from an “air-sky-land-digital” method ____58____ (create) by Wang Ningyuan’s team. The method uses drones (无人机) (air), satellite pictures (sky), traditional fieldwork (land) and digital mapping (digital).
This technology has brought great findings. Chris had been fully dedicated to a vital urban environment-protecting project for weeks. His main task was to improve the treatment systems for better local water quality. The project was in its final stage, with a critical deadline just days away, when his phone suddenly rang.
It was his neighbor, telling him his mother had fallen at home and needed urgent medical care. Chris immediately put down his work and rushed to his mother’s house. Upon arrival, Chris carefully helped her into his car and drove straight to the hospital. After three hours’ anxious waiting outside the operating room, he learned that the emergency surgery was successful and his mother was out of danger. However, his mother needed to stay in the hospital for at least two weeks to recover.
This left Chris stuck in the middle. As an only child, he had nobody to share the responsibility of caring for his mother. His father had passed away years earlier, so he was the only one who could look after her. Yet, as the project’s leader, he was crucial to meeting the upcoming deadline. The team relied on him to make key decisions, review final designs, and communicate with the city government. If he took time off to care for his mother, the project might be delayed; if he focused on work, he would feel guilty leaving his mother alone in the hospital. He struggled to find a way to balance both.
Word of Chris’ trouble soon reached his colleagues. Lisa, who had worked closely with him on the project, first heard about it and quickly gathered Mike and Sarah for a talk. “Chris has always been there to help us when we’re in need,” Lisa said. “Now it’s our turn to support him. Let’s split his work tasks and take turns visiting his mother in the hospital so he can handle the most important parts of the project and still spend time with his mother.” Mike and Sarah agreed without hesitation, eager to ease Chris’ burden(负担).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
They made a tight schedule.

【原文】 W: Hello! This is the Teen Study Life Broadcast. Studies show nearly 60 out of 100 students who make detailed study plans stop following them in 2 to 3 weeks. Recently, experts shared easy tips on sticking to these plans with a student magazine. First, turn big goals into small daily tasks. Big changes like “getting better at math” are hard to keep up with. Experts suggest making them tiny, easy things to do. For example, if you want to get better at solving math problems, do 5 simple ones each day instead of 20 all at once. Second, pick the right time for different subjects. If you feel sleepy trying to remember Chinese texts early in the morning, don’t force it-try doing that after breakfast when you’re more awake. Dr. Liu, a senior study advisor, said it’s “not smart” to copy what other students do. Everyone has different energy levels: Some students are good at physics in the afternoon, while others do better at English reading in the evening. Always choose what works for you.

I would be grateful if you could consider my application and give me this precious opportunity. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,

They made a tight schedule. Lisa took charge of communicating with the city government and sorting out daily project reports, while Mike and Sarah split the task of reviewing the final designs and coordinating with other team members. When they told Chris their plan, his eyes were filled with gratitude. With his colleagues’ support, Chris could focus on the core decisions of the project during the day and rush to the hospital to accompany his mother in the evening, finally escaping the painful dilemma.
With both going smoothly, good news came on the same day. The urban environment-protecting project was completed ahead of the deadline and passed the official inspection with high praise. Meanwhile, the doctor informed Chris that his mother’s recovery progress was better than expected and she could be discharged in a few days. When Chris shared the two pieces of good news with his colleagues, the office was filled with cheers. Later, Chris took his mother to thank the team in person. The project’s success and the warmth of mutual assistance made this challenging period a precious memory for everyone.
