In June 2025, 18-year-old musician Mia Wang started a project called “Melody of Hope”. The project brings music education to children in rural (农村的) areas of China, where many schools lack art resources.
Music as a universal language, can bring joy and inspiration. However, in many rural schools, there are no music teachers or instruments. Mia’s project aims to transform that. She collects used musical instruments from cities, repairs them, and donates them to rural schools. “Every child deserves the chance to enjoy music,” Mia said.
What makes Mia’s project unique is her interactive teaching method. She doesn’t just give away instruments; she also trains local teachers and sets up online music classes. For example, in a village in Yunnan Province, Mia taught the children to play the guitar through live streams (直播). The children were so excited that they formed a band and performed at the school’s annual (年度的) festival.
Mia also organizes music camps during summer vacation. These camps allow children from different villages to come together and learn music. “It’s amazing to see how music connects these kids,” Mia noted. Her project has already helped over 2,000 children, and many of them have developed a lifelong love for music.
Though Mia has achieved a lot, she stays modest. “This is a team effort. Many people have helped make this possible,” she said. With her deep love for music, Mia will surely continue to spread the melody of hope.

If you fill a glass of water, buy a bottle of water, or even draw water from a well, there’s a good chance you’re drinking little pieces of plastic particles — microplastics (微塑料), which are smaller than 5 millimeters in size. A growing number of studies have found these little particles in drinking water sources around the world, and scientists are now studying the possible risks that affect human health.
Most microplastics are little pieces that break off from plastic bottles, food bottles, and plastic bags as they age and wear down. And some microplastics come from clothing; when we wash clothes with microplastics, microplastics fall off and end up in polluted water systems. These microplastics then make their way into rivers, lakes, oceans, and even groundwater.
Scientists are still learning about how microplastics affect human health. In laboratory tests, microplastics have been shown to cause damage to liver cells (肝细胞) and the function of stomach in animals. But it’s unclear exactly how many microplastics humans take in, or what long-term effects this intake might have. “We know microplastics are in our bodies, but we don’t yet know if they’re causing harm,” said Dr. Miller, a specialist at the University of California.
To address the problem of more microplastics entering into our bodies, scientists are working on better filtration (过滤) technologies. Some new water filters can catch microplastics as small as 0.1 micrometers. Some governments recently passed some laws requiring water companies to test for microplastics and reduce their levels. However, technology and laws alone are not enough. The solution also lies in our daily choices. As Dr. Miller puts it: “We can’t undo the microplastics that are already in our water, but we can take steps to stop more from getting there. It’s a problem we can solve if we work together.”
8. What can we know about microplastics from paragraph 1
A. They are found in various water sources.
B. They are mainly from underground water.
C. They are proven harmful to human health.
D. They are less than 5 millimeters in length.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Microplastics’ varieties. B. Microplastics’ sources.
C. Microplastics’ influences. D. Microplastics’ solutions.
10. Which can best describe Dr. Miller’s view on microplastics
A. Current intake, zero danger.
B. Risk known, threat controlled.
C. Liver ruined, crisis incoming.
D. Particles found, damage unproven.
11. What is the author’s attitude to solving the problem of microplastics
A. Challenging. B. Unconcerned.
C. Active. D. Doubtful.

Australian scientists have successfully used artificial intelligence to find the plains-wanderer, one of the world’s most unique and endangered birds. This breakthrough (突破) provides important information for protecting this special species.
The plains-wanderer, standing just 15 centimeters tall, lives only in Australia’s grasslands. What makes this bird particularly unusual is its specific habitat requirements — it needs just the right amount of grass, earning it the nickname “Goldilocks” of the animal kingdom. The species faces serious threats as grasslands are turned into farms and cities. Zoos Victoria reports their numbers have dropped by over 85% in recent decades, with only 250 to 1,000 remaining in the wild.
This bird has several special characteristics. Poor at flying, it spends most time on land, choosing to run rather than fly when threatened. Scientifically classified in its own unique family, the plains-wanderer shows unusual gender roles — larger females defend their homes while smaller males care for the eggs.
Locating these birds presented significant challenges. Researchers from Zoos Victoria and Queensland University of Technology carried out a new solution: instead of searching visually, they decided to listen for the females’ distinctive “Ooom” call. They placed 35 recording devices (设备) across nine potential grassland habitats, collecting tens of thousands of hours of recordings of sound.
The real breakthrough came with AI analysis (分析). “The amount of recordings was far beyond human ability to analyze,” explained Chris Hartnett of Zoos Victoria. The specially trained AI system successfully identified plains-wanderer calls from two locations, including the first sighting west of Melbourne in over 30 years. Hartnett described the discovery as “like finding gold”.
This successful method opens new possibilities for wildlife protection. The research team continues monitoring while working with landowners to protect both the birds and their grassland habitats. As technology and conservation efforts combine, there’s renewed hope for saving this extraordinary species from dying out.
12. Why is the bird called “Goldilocks”
A. It has golden-colored feathers. B. It needs exactly the right habitat.
C. It was found in golden grasslands. D. It prefers living in warm areas.
13. What makes the plains-wanderer unusual
A. Its ability to fly long distances. B. Its common appearance worldwide.
C. Its household job division. D. Its preference for forest habitats.
14. How did researchers solve the locating problem
A. By using recording devices and AI. B. By searching grasslands on foot.
C. By setting up special bird feeders. D. By training dogs to track the birds.
15. Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Grasslands of Australia B. Saving Birds with Technology
C. Studying Bird Family Types D. Problems of Wildlife Protection

Lily, 16, had been arguing with her mom all week.
“You never let me go out! You don’t trust me!” she shouted one evening.
“I just want you safe,” Mom said quietly, but Lily slammed (猛关) her door without listening.
That night, while looking for her lost earring under the bed, Lily found an old notebook. It was her mom’s diary — the cover worn, the pages yellowed. Curious, she opened it and read the first entry, dated ten years ago:
March 12,2015
Today, Lily fell and hurt her knee. She cried so hard. I held her all night. My baby is growing, but I’m scared — what if one day I can’t protect her What if she gets lost Or hurt Or worse... what if she stops needing me
Another entry, five years ago:
She got her first A in math. I wanted to cheer, but I only said “Good job.” I know I’m not like other moms — I don’t hug much or say “I love you” often. But every night, I check if her window is locked. Every morning, I pack her favorite snack, even when she says she’s too old. I love her more than words can say.
Lily’s hands trembled (颤抖) as she read these words. She remembered how Mom always “happened” to be at the bus stop, how her lunchbox always had an extra banana, how her coat was always hanging by the door on rainy days — even if Mom was at work. She thought of her own sharp words just hours ago. Tears fell onto the page. She had thought Mom didn’t care.

Hello everyone,
I’m Li Hua, a new senior high student in Grade 1. I’d like to share a small challenge I faced when school started and how I dealt with it.
I was always afraid of making mistakes and during discussions, I felt too shy to speak up and would remain silent even when I had ideas to share. To overcome this, I set a small goal for myself: to make at least one comment in each English class. I started by preparing for the topic beforehand. The first time I spoke, I was nervous, but my teacher smiled and said, “Good point!” That positive feedback was incredibly encouraging. Gradually, speaking up became less scary.
Now, I’ve found that making mistakes is actually a valuable part of the learning process. I hope my experience can inspire others who might feel the same way.
【答案】One possible version:
Lily closed the door and sat quietly by the bedside. Tears rolling down her cheeks, she stared at the sleeping mother, whose face, though tired, looked beautiful under the dim night light. Heart aching with regret, she recalled every cold word she had thrown like stones into the silence. Hand trembling, she gently placed the diary back where she found it, as if returning not just a notebook, but a piece of love. Not once had Mom failed to protect her — the locked window, the umbrella by the window in her lunchbox — all a spoke of love without words.
The next morning, Mom was washed up and ready for the kitchen as usual. Seeing her best over the sleep, Lily walked slowly, then wrapped her arms around her from behind. Mom spoke, spoon in hand, “Mom.” Lily whispered, voice broken, “read your diary.” Mom turned around, eyes wet with tears, and held her tightly. For the first time in years, they shared a long, warm hug. At that moment, Lily felt what words could never say: love is not always loud; sometimes, it’s a silent presence, a warm meal, a mother’s watchful heart.
