Coming from generations of fishers of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, Sandy Monrose never imagined herself as a farmer. But when a ship crashed into the coral reef (珊瑚礁) in 2020, turning the sea inky black with harmful fuel and sinking the local economy, she and some local women turned to the land to feed their families. Now her “model farm” is developing rapidly.
Memories of the biggest ecological disaster to hit the island are still raw. “As people of the sea, we knew what needed to be done,” says Monrose. After the oil spill, she showed people how to quickly set up net booms (网栅) to contain and clean up the mess. Her cousins brought their fishing boats to cast them out to sea. Up and down the coast, volunteers mobilized to make hundreds of booms to protect their shores.
It was only months later, as the cruel reality of lost livelihoods sank in, that the idea of starting a farm germinated. By this point, Monrose had been meeting women from nearby communities who shared her desperation. One evening, while staring at the empty coastline, she suddenly turned to her friends and said, “What if we grow our own food ” The next morning, she made an appointment with Ferney Ltd, which runs an “agri-center” for farming businessmen.
The early days were painful: the new farm was destroyed by tropical rainstorms repeatedly. Eventually, Ferney Ltd gave them higher land. Once the site of a sugarcane (甘蔗) plantation, the over-enriched soil was badly in need of some professional skills. For this, Ferney organized a series of training for the women. “That’s when things got serious. The farm became very structured,” says Monrose.
Latouche, from the tiny village of Bambous Virieux, says farming gave her a new sense of autonomy. Bringing home food has made her “feel stronger”. Robinson, who lives near Monrose, says, “I’ve found something that keeps me going, and every day we’re getting food to take home.”
4. What did Monrose do right away after the disaster
A. She sought help from a company. B. She took action to reduce pollution.
C. She planned new ways to earn money. D. She checked the coast with volunteers.

A. Moving to richer soil. B. Experiencing fewer disasters.
C. Growing different crops. D. Learning farming skills.
7. What does the text mainly talk about
A. An oil spill led to women-led efforts in farming.
B. Women on the island protested against pollution.
C. A fisherwoman led coastal soil recovery.
D. Community cooperation powered farming.

It is William Shakespeare, the great coiner, who is given credit for the word. Coriolanus, one of his characters, compares going into exile (流放) to a “lonely dragon” retiring to his cave. He was talking about a physical state: someone who was lonely was simply alone. Then, thanks to the Romantic poets, the word took on emotional meanings. Loneliness became a condition of the soul. For William Wordsworth, who famously “wandered lonely as a cloud”, the natural world offered an escape from negative feelings of loneliness — a host of flowers could provide “cheerful company”. Today, loneliness is often seen as a serious public-health problem, creating the feeling of disconnection.
In his book Solitude, Netta Weinstein, a psychology professor wonders the rewards of time spent alone. He begins with an account of stories of solitude created by figures such as Michel Montaigne, a writer, and Edward Hopper, a ta then draw on laboratory work, interviews and surveys to clarify how being alone really affects the human mind.
It is common to treat loneliness and solitude as synonyms (同义词), but they are not. The author suggests that what is negatively described as one state can be positively expressed as the other. Loneliness, often perceived as negative, can potentially be transformed into a positive experience of solitude. To this end he emphasizes how being alone can help restore people and offers practical advice. In a noisy world, he argues, people should make time to be alone, away from attention-grabbing motives.
The book’s interviewees mostly regard a lack of company as a contributor to autonomy. But this depends on whether solitude is desirable or not. Enforced solitude, such as that experienced by prisoners, typically leads to nothing but suffering. Elective solitude, by contrast, affords space for self-reflection. It can open the door to “peak experiences” such as wonder, harmony, and happiness. In a highly-connected digital age, however, many readers do not fancy their chances of ever taking a long enough break to have such experiences.
8. How does paragraph 1 introduce the concept of loneliness
A. By tracing its development. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By making a point to be argued. D. By sharing a romantic story.
9. What does Netta Weinstein’s book Solitude focus on
A. The various terms of solitude.
B. The societal impact of solitude.
C. The long-standing history of solitude.
D. The psychological benefits of solitude.
ta describes the state of loneliness as __________.
A. stressful B. essential C. changeable D. never beneficial
11. What does Netta most probably agree with according to the last paragraph
A. Enforced solitude is a matter of choice.
B. Enforced solitude contributes to autonomy.
C. Elective solitude is rare in the digital world.
D. Elective solitude interrupts peak experiences.
D
Wool is perfect for keeping warm, as the pockets of air in the fibers trap heat. But nowadays, most wool doesn’t come from sheep that spend their days out wandering the vast green fields. Most of the millions of sheep raised annually for wool live on industrialized factory farms. These facilities not only subject the animals to crowded and dirty conditions, but they’re also terrible for the environment.
Part of the issue with wool is that when sheep belch (打嗝), they produce methane, a greenhouse gas with 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide. On average, one sheep will release around 13 kilograms of methane per year. And when there are more than 1 billion of them on the planet, mostly farmed for meat or wool, this all adds up to a disastrous amount of emissions.
But it isn’t the only issue associated with sheep farming. In New Zealand, which is one of the world’s biggest wool producers, 99 percent of the rivers running through urban and farm areas are heavily polluted. A lot of this is due to dairy farming, but sheep also bear much of the blame. This is because sheep waste contains a type of bacterium that, in some cases, can cause disease.
The future of fashion must find solutions. PETA, the largest animal rights organization in the world, says warm, comfortable fibers don’t have to come from sheep. In 2018, PETA awarded a group of Colombian students for creating Woocoa, a bio-based wool.
While animal-free fibers are gaining ground, recycled wool has also emerged as a promising middle ground for reducing the industry’s impact. Rather than relying on the resource-heavy process of raising and cutting new sheep, recycled wool gives post-industrial fabric waste a second life. Using recycled wool prevents millions of pounds of textile (纺织) waste from ending up in landfills each year, while cutting carbon emissions by as much as 75 percent compared to conventional wool.
12. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 2
A. To show the climate impact of sheep.
B. To provide evidence for climate change.
C. To reveal the conditions of factory farms.
D. To describe the warming power of methane.
13. What problem has sheep farming caused for New Zealand
A. The widespread river pollution.
B. The high cost of wool production.
C. The sharp decline in dairy farming.
D. The reduced availability of farmland.
14. Why did PETA award a group of Colombian students in 2018
A. They improved practices in sheep farming.
B. They established a system for recycling wool.
C They expanded the use of plant-based materials.
D. They developed a sustainable alternative to wool.
15. What is a possible result of using recycled wool
A. Improved sheep welfare. B. Expansion of sheep farming.
C. Decreased production expenses. D. Positive environmental outcomes.

The rich smell of beef filled the kitchen as Mom browned the meat in the hot pan, drops of sweat forming on her forehead. “Annie! Dinner’s ready!” she called out.
From the living room, Annie barely responded, her eyes glued to her phone. The colorful food delivery app attracted her with crispy fried chicken, cheesy pizza, and spicy hamburgers. Her finger stopped over the “Order Now” button. “Just this once,” she thought, “Mom’s cooking is so boring anyway.”
At the dinner table, Dad frowned at the fast food bag in front of Annie. He said, “Eating junk food again Your mom worked hard on this meal.”
Annie rolled her eyes. “I just wanted something different.”
Mom sighed, pushing a piece of beef on her plate. “Most fast food contains too much oil and salt. It’s not good for you.”
“Here we go again!” Annie thought angrily. She took a big bite of her fried chicken on purpose, chewing loudly as if to prove a point.
Late that night, Annie woke up with a sharp pain in her stomach. She curled into a ball, pressing her stomach. “Ugh… maybe that chicken was bad ” she whispered. Sweating and sick, she barely had time to rush to the bathroom before throwing up. “I can’t tell Mom or Dad,” she thought, swallowing hard against the sour taste in her mouth, “or they’ll never let me eat fried chicken or pizza again!” Thinking this way, she slowly fell asleep despite the pain.
The next morning, Annie still had a slight stomachache, so she skipped breakfast and went straight to school. But by lunch time, her hunger overpowered her caution. She seemed to have forgotten last night’s lesson, wolfing down an oily slice of pizza and a chocolate bar. A satisfied smile spread across her face, and her stomachache didn’t seem so bad after all. However, within an hour, she felt dizzy and her vision blurred. Her classmate’s voice sounded distant. “Annie Are you okay ” Before she could answer, everything went black.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
