What’s really green

To learn some key words and expressions in this lesson
Look at the questions about “green living” and tick your answers.

Now work in groups and see if other people share your ideas.
Read the four subheadings in the passage and decide if they are true or false.
As subheadings expand on the main heading or title, they can be slightly longer than the main heading. Although not every paragraph needs a subheading, they can be skimmed to give the reader an overall understanding of the content of a text.
Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones.
When you turn off a device, it stops using power.
Eating local food is good for the environment.
It’s better to take a shower than a bath.

1. Making a paper bag uses more energy and water than making a plastic bag. It also produces more greenhouse gases.
Paper bags are not good for the environment.

amount v. if figures, sums etc amount to a particular total, they equal that total when they are added together

e.g. Time lost through illness amounted to 1,357 working days.

amount n. a quantity of something such as time, money, or a substance 数量，数额
e.g. They spend equal amounts of time in California and New York.

“a large / small / ... amount of + 不可数名词”作主语时，谓语动词常用单数形式
“large / small / ... amounts of + 不可数名词”作主语时，谓语动词常用复数形式
e.g.

produce是不可数名词, 主要指农产品。
product既可作可数名词, 也可作不可数名词, 意为“产品, 制品”, 指任何体力或脑力劳动所产生的东西, 一般多指工业产品, 也可指农业品。
production是不可数名词，表示生产行为或产量。
