Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the questions.
a We see a woman swimming at night in a dark sea.
b It made people frightened of sharks, …
In sentence (a), who is swimming at night
2. In sentence (b), who is frightened of sharks
In sentence (a), a woman is swimming at night.
In sentence (b), people are frightened of sharks.
In sentence (a), a woman is swimming. In other words, the woman does the action of swimming. So the author uses -ing. But in sentence (b), people are frightened. As a result, passive voice is used. So the author uses -ed.
3. Why does the author choose to use different forms of verbs in the two sentences
Now look for more sentences with these structures in the reading passage.
People just wanted them killed.
Benchley saw sharks being killed and this caused a deep change in him.
v.-ing形式用在hear, see, smell, feel, watch, find, notice, observe, look at, listen to等表示感觉的(短语)动词后作宾语补足语时,v.-ing形式表示正在进行的动作,其逻辑主语是句子的宾语。

e.g. I saw him changing the wheel of his car.

have/get + 宾语 + v.-ed “使某事被做(让别人做或主语自己做)”
e.g. They kept the door closed for a long time.
e.g. He managed to get it done by himself.
make +宾语+过去分词 “表结果”
e.g. He wants to have his eyes examined tomorrow.
Everyone wishes the matter settled as soon as possible.
e.g. When we got to school, we saw the door locked.
He noticed the thief caught by the police.
e.g. I raised my voice to make myself heard.
常在感官动词 find, feel, hear, listen to, see, watch, look at, notice, observe(观察)等的后面作宾语补足语。
用在want, wish, like, expect, order等表示“希望、愿望、命令”的动词之后,表示命令或希望某件事被完成。

Carbon footprint
A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse
gases — primarily carbon dioxide — released
into the air by a particular human activity.
For example, when you drive a car, the engine burns fuel which creates a certain amount of greenhouse gases. When you heat your house with coal or electricity, you also generate greenhouse gases. Even the production of food and goods emits some quantities of greenhouse gases. Together these emissions make up a carbon footprint.
