Still Alice

As an assistant to impossibly demanding New York fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, young Andy Sachs has landed a job that “a million girls would die for.” Unluckily, her heaven-sent post as Miranda’s assistant just might be the death of her!
There’s a very classic line in the film: Let me know when your whole life goes up in smoke. That means it’s time for a promotion (提拔).
Mona Lisa Smile
This movie teaches you about dignity (尊严), courage and persistence, and the central theme is learning to have a mind of your own.
Katherine Watson is a recent UCLA graduate hired to teach art history at the all-female Wellesley College, in 1953. Determined to face up to the outdated customs of society, Katherine inspires her traditional students to challenge the lives they are expected to lead.

Some people see oysters (牡蛎) as delicious food. But some raise oysters to clean up the polluted seawater. Amy, a 15-year-old girl, is one of them. She has won a master oyster gardener prize this year. She thinks oysters are really helpful. They are environmental stars.
“I knew nothing about oyster gardening when I started in 2022. I learned all of this after I completed a free course on it. The course is on raising oysters in cages (笼子),” Amy says.
There used to be lots of oysters in coastal waters. But their numbers have diminished. This is mainly because of some natural disasters. Oyster gardening is a way to help. “Anyone can join,”an oyster gardening researcher Liz Black says.
“You don’t have to do a lot to take care of your oysters, but the influence they have on the environment is huge,” Amy says.
During the oyster gardening season, Amy and her mom go to the beach. There Amy has nine cages.
“Once a week I go out there,” she says. She pulls the cages from the water to check the condition of the oysters.
This spring, Amy’s oysters will be big enough to be collected. Amy will go with Liz to pick them up. Oysters that are collected will then be “planted” on the reefs (礁). So far, Amy has raised more than 1,500 oysters. She’s a great leader of oyster gardening and a great supporter, too.
4. What does Amy think of oysters
A. Huge. B. Clean. C. Helpful. D. Delicious.

Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long cold rainy days. Let’s discover science behind sunlight.
Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical (化学物质) called serotonin (血清素). When you are exposed to sunlight, your body will make more serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin will keep you in good spirits. At night, when there is little or no light, your body produces another chemical-melatonin (褪黑激素). It helps your body relax and will make you feel tired, which can prepare you for a good night’s sleep. You should keep a good balance between these two chemicals.
However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day. That’s why it is believed that those people should get outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and be happy, all at the same time.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. People in those places are easier to get seasonal affective disorder (SAD). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit under bright artificial (人工的) lights for some time.
The roles that sunshine plays in people’s life are more than those above. For example, your body produces vitamin D (维生素D) from sunlight, which is important for being healthy. In fact, there is more science about sunlight for you to discover. So next time, when you notice the sunshine on your shoulder, take a moment to think, “Why do we love sunshine ”

The Civilian Mobile Library offers books for free. Readers are invited to take one book every 15 days. They are encouraged to pass it on to someone else once they’ve finished reading. And they are not expected to return the book.
The library is just seven square meters in size but houses thousands of books on different subjects. “It might be the smallest library in the world,” said Xu Dawei, the owner. “But in another sense, it’s also the biggest because the books keep moving. Once, a reader took a book on Chinese garden history. After finishing it, the reader passed it to a neighbor. The neighbor then took it to Germany!”
“I’ve read thousands of books” Xu said. “Books have truly changed my life.” The idea of starting a library took shape in 2010, when Xu recommended (推荐) online a list of his favorite books to university students, but many of them said they couldn’t find those books in their school libraries or local bookstores. So he began sending his books to readers for free. “They all wrote me letters expressing their thanks. It inspired me to take it further, turning my book-gifting into a physical space,” Xu said.
“All the readers have to do is come. Even if they finish a book and decide not to pass it on, at least the book benefited (使受益) one person and perhaps their family, helping them fall in love with reading,” Xu said. “And this is my dream.”
12. Why did Xu Dawei mention the reader in Paragraph 2
A. To ask for some help. B. To compare two ideas.
C. To recommend a book. D. To support his thoughts.
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. Who helped Xu manage the library.
B. What inspired Xu to start the library.
C. When Xu fell in love with reading.
D. Where Xu found his favorite books.
14. What is Xu Dawei’s dream
A. To travel around the world.
B. To go to university.
C. To help more people love reading.
D. To start seven libraries.
15. What is the best title (标题) for the text
A. Take a Book, Pass It On B. Your Hope, Our Dream
C. Warm Friend, Nice Trip D. Once Start, Never Stop

Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.
As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.
One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently.
“I am no longer a kid; I won’t play around trees any more,” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.”
“Sorry, but I don’t have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money.” The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn’t come back after that.
The tree was upset.
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. “Come and play with me,” the tree said.
“I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me ” “Sorry, I don’t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.
The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn’t appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree requested.
“I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat ”“Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.
