Four of the World’s Natural Disasters
The following four natural disasters destroyed cities and communities around the world. By flood, typhoon, or earthquake, these events have altogether taken millions of human lives.
Yangtze River Flood
The major flood of 1931 covered tens of thousands of square miles, flooding rice fields and many cities, including Nanjing and Wuhan. The flood influenced more than 50 million people. Government organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimated (估计) that about 3.7 million people died in this disaster.
Typhoon Nina
Typhoon Nina struck Henan province of China in August 1975. The typhoon caused a serious dam (水坝) failure, and more than 150,000 people were dead or injured. According to reports, at least 26, 000 people died in the floods. About 145,000 people died from diseases caused by water pollution and famine (饥荒) . The number of people influenced by the disaster was more than 10,000,000.
Kashmir Earthquake
On October 8, 2005, a disastrous earthquake struck the Jashmir region. The earthquake measured 7.6, followed by many aftershocks, landslides, and falling rocks. The seriousness of the damage and the high number of deaths were worsened by poor construction (建筑). In Kashmir, at least 79,000 people were killed, and more than 32,000 buildings broke down.
Haitian Earthquake
At the beginning of 2010, an earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake measured 7.0 and was followed by aftershocks that measured 5.9 and 5.5. Another aftershock that measured 5.9 struck on January 20. There have been different views about the total number of deaths caused by this earthquake, but estimates suggest that about 200,000 — 300,000 people died. The first light pushed through the blinds as Elena slipped on her shoes. The city was still quiet. Today was Saturday — but not a day for rest. She had signed up to help at Rosie’s Free Kitchen, a local nonprofit that made hot meals for people in need.
She arrived early. The kitchen was already busy. At a corner table, an older man named Mr. Daniels was already cutting carrots. He gave her a nod and said, “Thanks for coming.” She smiled, though her hands were a bit shaky.
Elena’s task was simple: wash and prepare vegetables for soup. She watched volunteers move around her — some stirring big pots, others pouring the soup into the bowls, still more packaging meals. It was indeed a quiet dance of service.
Twenty minutes in, someone shook the doors. A young mother walked in with her little kid. Their eyes were cautious. Elena’s heart suddenly tightened. She served them a warm bowl of soup and watched as the child pressed his face into the bowl’s steam. The mother’s eyes met Elena’s. A silent “thank you” hung between them, heavier than words.
At midday, the line grew longer — but so did the smiles. An older woman whispered, “You didn’t have to do this.” Elena shook her head. “Yes, I did.” The woman touched her hand and said, “I really appreciate it.” The words were simple, but they echoed in Elena’s mind.
After cleanup — mopping floors, putting away plates, wiping tables — the kitchen fell silent. As Elena walked home, her shoes dusty, her shirt smelling slightly of garlic, she felt full in a way she hadn’t before. Service, she realized, was not a burden — it was a bridge. A bridge connecting different lives through shared humanity. A bridge she felt honored to help build, one bowl at a time.
4. How did Elena feel when she started her work at the kitchen
A. Nervous but excited. B. Curious and relaxed.
C. Confident and proud. D. Tired but determined.
5 What does “a quiet dance of service” imply
A. It was a slow process. B. It was a smooth cooperation.
C. It was a silent activity. D. It was a graceful performance.
6. Why does the author mention the older woman in Paragraph 5
A. To show Elena’s personal growth. B. To indicate the diversity of people helped.
C. To describe the challenges volunteers face. D. To stress the value of Rosie’s Free Kitchen.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Kitchen: A Scene of Labor B. Saturday: A Day of Duty
C. Service: A Bridge of Kindness D. Work: A Burden of Volunteer

We all know that exercise is good for our body. It helps us build a strong heart and keep a healthy weight. But did you know that exercise is also great for your brain Recent studies show that physical activity can actually change the brain in some amazing ways, making us think better and feel happier.
The first change is about the brain’s ability to learn and remember. When we exercise, our heart sends more blood to the brain, carrying oxygen and important food. This helps the brain cells grow and become stronger. Scientists have found that a part of the brain called the hippocampus (海马体), which is very important for memory, gets larger in people who exercise often. This means these people may find it easier to learn new things and get higher scores on tests.
Besides a better memory, exercise is also a powerful way to improve our mood. During and after physical activity, the brain produces more “feel-good” chemicals. These natural brain chemicals help to reduce feelings of worry and stress. You don’t need to run a long way to get the result. Even a short walk or some simple sports can make you feel more relaxed and happy.
So, how can you add more exercise to your life You don’t have to be an athlete. The key is to find an activity you enjoy. It could be walking or riding a bike to school, joining a dance club, or just playing ball games with friends in the park. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes most days.
In short, exercise is not just about building a healthy body. It is also one of the most effective ways to build a healthier, happier, and smarter brain. Next time when you need a break from study, perhaps going out for some exercise is the best choice.

A. By making us feel happier and more relaxed.
B. By helping brain cells grow stronger in the hippocampus.
C. By allowing the heart to send less blood to the brain.
D. By making us want to learn new things.
10. How does exercise help to improve our mood
A. By bringing more blood and oxygen to the brain during physical activity.
B. By helping our brain learn new things and remember information better.
C. By making the hippocampus, an important part for memory, become larger.
D. By producing natural brain chemicals that reduce feelings of worry and stress.
11. What does the author suggest for adding exercise to our life

For many teenagers, Saturday mornings are a time to sleep in. After a busy week of waking up early, weekends offer a chance to catch up on rest. A new study finds that sleeping in on weekends—as long as it’s not for more than two extra hours—may help teenagers feel less anxious.
Sleep is very important for everyone, especially teenagers, because it helps the brain and body work properly. However, 75% of American teenagers do not get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. School, homework, and other activities require early wake-ups, and teenagers usually find it difficult to fall asleep before 11 pm.
In the past, research has suggested that sleeping too much on weekends could cause health problems. But no one had looked closely at how weekend sleep affects anxiety.
Sojeong Kim, a researcher from the University of Oregon, decided to study this. She focused on teenagers aged 12 to 15, as this is when sleep problems often start. The study used information from around 1,900 teens who had filled out a survey about their feelings of anxiety.
The results showed that teenagers who slept in on weekends had lower anxiety, but only if they slept for less than two extra hours. teenagers who didn’t sleep in or lost sleep on the weekend reported higher anxiety levels. Those who slept in more than two extra hours had the most anxiety of all.
Kim believes that sleeping too much on weekends can cause “social jet lag (时差)”, just like the tiredness people feel when they travel across time zones. For now, she wants teenagers to know there can be advantages to sleeping in on the weekend. “Getting a little more sleep on weekends might help you feel less anxious,” she says. “But sleeping too much may make things worse.”
12. What does the author want to point out in paragraph 2
A. It’s hard for teenagers to get enough sleep.
B. Too much homework is harmful to kids.
C. Most teenagers sleep for over eight hours.
D. Adults enjoy sleeping late on workdays.
13. What were the teenagers in the study asked to do
A. Take a written exam.
B. Answer some questions.
C. Write a diary entry.
D. Go to bed early every day.
14. What did the study show about teenagers sleeping in over two extra hours on weekends
A. They avoided “social jet lag”.
B. They felt relaxed in the classroom.
C. They experienced higher anxiety.
D. They reported a look of satisfaction.
15. What is Sojeong Kim’s suggestion for teenagers regarding weekend sleep
A. They should avoid sleeping in at all costs.
B. They should get a little more sleep but not too much.
C. They should follow the same sleep schedule as on weekdays.
D. They should sleep as long as they want to make up for the lost sleep.
