Children grow quickly, especially their feet. But many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites(寄生虫) from the soil.
Kenton Lee, an American man invented The Shoe That Grows. He explains, "It grows in three places: the front, on the side and on the back. It can last up to five years. The bottom is rubber(橡胶) like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather(皮革)."
Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya. "I just remember a little girl who wore a pair of small shoes. The shoes were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet."
However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise.
A pair of shoes, he says, gives more than protection. It gives a child self-worth(自我价值) and more chances to succeed. "Because it's a small thing that really does make a big difference to keep them healthy and happy and having more chances to succeed."

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent drought (干旱) and floods.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers.
Two thousand years ago, a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation.
Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult sometimes to make the people realize this. They cut down the trees but are too careless to plant and look after new trees. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in, and also bind the soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, the rainfalls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the rain carries away the rich top soil in which crops grow. When all the top soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.
28. Trees are useful to man mainly in three ways, the most important of which is that they can ________.
A. keep him from the hot sunshine B. protect him from droughts and floods
C. make him draw quick profit from them D. enable him to build warships
29. It’s a great pity that ________.
A. man hasn’t realized the importance of trees to him
B. man is eager to profit from trees
C. man is only interested in building empires
D. man hasn’t found out that he has lost all trees
30. Sooner or later the forests will disappear ________.
A. unless a country has a plenty supply of trees
B. unless people stop cutting down their trees
C. unless the government punishes those who cut trees instead of planting them
D. unless all people are taught the importance of planting trees
31. The word “bind” in Paragraph 5 means “________”.
A. to wash away B. to make stay together
C. to make wet D. to improve
D
A new study, published in Psychological Science, finds that people who think they can learn from their mistakes have a different brain reaction to mistakes than people who think intelligence is fixed.
“One big difference between people who think intelligence is malleable and those who think intelligence is fixed is how they respond to mistakes,” says Jason S. Moser, of Michigan State University. Studies have found that people who think intelligence is malleable say things like, “When the going gets tough, I put in more effort.” or “If I make a mistake, I try to learn and figure it out.” On the other hand, people who think that they can't get smarter will not take opportunities to learn from their mistakes.
For this study, Moser and his colleagues gave participants a task that was easy to make a mistake on. They were supposed to identify the middle letter of a five-letter series like “MMMMM”, “MMNMM” or “NNMNN”. Sometimes the middle letter was the same as the other four, and sometimes it was different.
While doing the task, the participants wear a cap on his or her head that records electrical activity in the brain. When someone makes a mistake, their brain makes two quick signals: an initial response that indicates something has gone wrong—the “Oh, crap” response, as Moser calls it—and a follow-up signal that indicates an attempt to correct the mistake.
A bigger second signal was displayed in the participants who were better able to recover from making a mistake—that is, those who believed that they could learn from such a mistake—than in the participants who had negative feelings about a mistake and believed that their failure was due to their own shortcomings.
“This research might help us understand why exactly the two types of individuals show different behaviors after mistakes and could help in training people to believe that they can work harder and learn more, by showing how their brain is reacting to mistakes,” Moser says.
32. What does the underlined word “malleable” mean in the second paragraph
A. Unchanged. B. Flexible.
C. Unimportant. D. Difficult.
33. If a student thinks her intelligence is fixed, what will she say
A. “It’s not worth bothering to try harder.”
B. “Come on, though I’ve failed this time.”
C. “I want to know why I failed this exam.”
D “I do like the feelings the failure brings.”
34. What is the significance of the research findings
A. To advise people to respond to mistakes.
B. To inspire people to learn from mistakes.
C. To promote people's blame on themselves.
D. To indicate people’s difference in behavior.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Oh, crap! B. Waste of effort!
C. What a pity! D. Never give up!

Last month, our Max, a husky passed away at five and a half years old after a series of health issues, leaving us extremely upset. Proud of him, we’ll never forget what he did for our family. In his whole life, he was always by our side, witnessing my wedding with my husband David and the birth of my children and sharing pleasure and pain with us. In fact, he is more than just family to us.
More importantly, for his bravery, Max saved my life.
My husband, David, and I had got him when he was 12 weeks old, and he settled into our home perfectly. He was cheeky, and loved testing the limits of what he could do — like snuggling (依偎) with us on the couch or the bed — but we loved him for it. Though wolf-like in appearance, he was a teddy bear at heart. When he was 18 months old, he was full of energy. Once we’d finished our walk, we headed back towards home.
Four years ago, it was one of my favourite parts of the day, when I walked Max, around our neighbourhood, the sun shining down on us. “It’s such a beautiful day,” I told him. He barked in agreement while pulling on the lead rope, eager to meet new people that he could stop to hug. We were around 200m away, when suddenly I felt a thud (重击) on my back and everything went black.
When I came around, I was in the hospital, covered in wires. David was at my bedside. “What happened ” I murmured. I couldn’t remember a thing.
David explained a woman had been driving down the quiet road where Max and I were walking when her vehicle lost control, mounted the pavement and hit me, pushing me head-first into a rock wall.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)开头已给出。
