Also called the Garden Island, Kauai is the oldest island in the Hawaiian region. As its name implies, it prides itself in being covered with the color green, thanks to well-kept preserves of forests. But the island and its locals aren’t shy of providing events to residents and visitors alike.
Koloa Plantation Days
Held for 10 days every July, Koloa Plantation Days in Old Koloa Town focuses on the history of the area as a former sugar plantation. You can look through local art while listening to Hawaiian music, or pick up some local food specialties and check out an exhibit about the town’s history.
Waimea Town Celebration
The west side of Kauai comes alive during Waimea Town Celebration, a nine-day festival held every February in the historic town of Waimea. Films and performances celebrating the culture of Hawaii occur throughout the event, so you can sit in an air-conditioned theater to relax while experiencing some local culture.
Lei Day
On the first of May each year, Hawaiians celebrate Lei Day on the day traditionally known as May Day. The Kauai Museum celebrates this yearly event with lei-making lessons, food stands, live entertainment and a lei contest. If you’re not into making your own lei, there are leis available for you to buy at the museum, so you can join even if your flower-necklace skills aren’t good enough.
Prince Kuhio Celebration
March 26 is Prince Kuhio Day, a statewide holiday honoring the Hawaiian prince who helped preserve local cultural practices and protect the rights of native Hawaiians. Kauai residents celebrate it for up to two weeks. Events in some towns include historical tours, cultural displays, canoe races and drumming performances.

It’s terrible and strange, but I don’t really remember much about the hurricane itself. It all happened so suddenly. I was sitting in my room with my cat, Smartie, on my lap, when the roof just flew off. I was so frightened that I just froze.
Mom cried to get out quickly, but it was already too late by then. The rain was coming down so hard and so fast. Our street turned into a river in seconds. We were going nowhere.
At first,I was pleased we could stay at home, but soon it got really tough. Without a roof, staying inside was too dangerous. We just had drinking water that was sent to us by helicopter, but it was never enough. It was August,so it was really, really hot and it smelled so bad everywhere! 1 just spent the days watching the boats going up and down the street and looking out for Smartie. He had disappeared the moment the storm hit.
Living in the open air,we became breakfast, lunch and dinner for the mosquitoes___24___But Mom said that whatever happens,we should always try to see the good side of things. It was difficult to stay positive, though. All we had left were the clothes on our backs. But as Mom kept on reminding us,we were all together and safe. Mom’s words made us feel better.I remember us all lying under the midnight sky and looking up at the stars. Because there were no lights,we could see the Big Dipper, and the Milky Way. It was amazing! Despite the disaster, moments like those gave us hope for the future.
Although it was only a few days before we were rescued, it felt like months. We were taken to another town in a faraway county. Thankfully, Smartie came home just in time.None of us knew that we wouldn’t be back for quite a while then.
Now,one year has passed and I’m back home in New Orleans. Some families have yet to return, but many others have come back.Although we are surrounded by reminders of the disaster. we are working together to rebuild our homes and our lives. Now we have another chance to look up at the stars of New Orleans, their beauty inspiring us and giving us confidence to move on.

Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. But it also presents a danger to the world in two significant ways. First, the making of paper requires the loss of millions of trees each year. Between 2001 and 2019, the world lost 386 million hectares of forest. Of the trees that were cut down, 42% went to paper production. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot sustain such a high rate of forest loss.
The second great problem with paper is what happens once it is no longer useful. A huge quantity of wastepaper ends up in dumps and landfills (垃圾填埋场), where it can produce harmful gases. Paper in landfills leads to the release (释放) of methane, a gas that is a significant contributor in global warming.
One simple solution can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Paper is mainly made from cellulose (纤维素), which makes up the cell walls of trees and many other plants. Because of its structure, cellulose can be used repeatedly in papermaking. So far, trees are the only source of cellulose that can fill the massive demand for paper products. Therefore, recycling paper is simply one of the best ways to save trees.
Thanks to advances in processing, recycled paper isn’t the dull-colored stuff many of us are familiar with any more. It now can offer the same print performance as non-recycled paper.
Effective recycling requires a consistent effort. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be carried out. The massive loss of trees affects everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industries to do the same.
28. What does the author want to express in paragraph 1
A. Consequences resulting from forest loss.
B. The significance of paper in daily life.
C. The disadvantages of current paper production.
D. The severe situation caused by papermaking.
29. Why is paper in landfills harmful
A. It releases smelly gases. B. It results in global climate change.
C. It pollutes the nearby land. D. It may lead to fire accidents.
30. What can we know about paper-recycling
A. It produces cellulose to make more paper. B. The structure of cellulose makes it possible.
C. The color of recycled paper is different. D. It produces cellulose without using trees.
31 What’s the purpose of this text
A. To introduce paper recycling technology. B. To stress the threat of global warming.
C. To appeal to people to recycle paper. D. To describe the considerable need for paper.
D
Music is an important part of life today. It is a source of entertainment, and it is a way to express emotions(情感). But music is not only all this, it is also something that can be used to create a strong focus while people are working and is generally beneficial to the human brain and specifically the adolescents' (青少年) brain.
Music can reduce anxiety and depression, as well as improving mood and memory. Adolescents represent a stage in development when stress levels are unsteady. An analysis shows that listening to music lowers the stress hormone in the brain. Ashford University also states that music has also proven to be effective across a variety of treatment ways for conditions ranging from premature birth to depression to Parkinson's disease.
Music is also a way to stimulate the brain and help increase productivity. In Elena Mannes' study “The Power of Music” through National Public Radio (NPR), she declares the fact that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function. Tests have also shown that listening to background music can increase productivity. “In majors we listen to music as we do our work,” says visual artist, Tova Engel, “It is super helpful because it allows us all to do our own thing to create more art.”
Research done by Dr. Jonathan Burdette, a professor at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, further proves the benefit of music on the brain. Dr. Burdette conducted a study where he and his fellow investigators used a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), to find changes in blood flow in the brain. To summarize, Dr. Burdette's research shows that listening to music that you like will improve brain connectivity, especially when doing independent work that requires a lot of internal thought and reflection. As adolescents spend a lot of time working on computers or even just doing work on paper alone, music can help teens concentrate on their thinking.
32. What's the main idea of paragraph 2
A. Music is mind medicine. B. Music is good for the brain's growth.
C. Music helps adolescents free from stress. D. Music helps patients recover from cancer.
33. Why does Tova Engel like listening to music according to the text
A. It stimulates his body. B. It helps her remove stress.
C. It gives her more strength. D. It can improve her creativity.
34. What's Dr. Burdette's attitude to listening to music that people like
A. Worried. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Music Helps Students Get Rid of Stress B. Music Makes Adolescents Fond of Art
C. Music's Benefit to the Adolescents' Brain D. Music's Function on the Brain Development

On Sunday,Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing with his father at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. They had a wonderful day and decided to drive home to Massachusetts after a final run. They took a chairlift to the top of the mountain, where they split up to go down in different trails. When the father finished his run, he headed to the parking lot to wait for his son. However, Nicholas never showed up.
It turned out that a fierce snowstorm had swept into the area as Nicholas was on his way down. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path and ventured down the west side of the mountain. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost and all alone. His way back to the ski trails was blocked. What's worse, he didn't have any food or water with him, let alone his cell phone or other supplies. The sun began to sink and he was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about Bear Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild that he used to watch on TV. In the show, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to help himself out. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop moving around. He needed the energy, and the winds weren't as strong in the valley where he stood as they were up on the mountain. Plus, there was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to seek shelter from the freezing wind and snow. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
When evening came, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate some snow and drank some water from nearby stream so that he wouldn't dehydrate (脱水)。 Then he returned to his cave and slept.
Paragraph 1:
When Nicholas didn't show up, his father realized there must be something wrong.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The next dayNicholas heard the sound of a snowmobile.
