Chinese poetry through the guqin:
a practical tool to learn Chinese language and culture
Confucius said: “To educate somebody, you should start with poetry, and finish with music”. The North American Guqin Association (NAGA) has developed a new class series that will combine (融合) poetry and music with guqin study and aims to deepen the appreciation of Chinese poetry and guqin culture through the exploration of guqin songs.
Course description
The classes will consist of lectures and practical sessions (课). Students will not only learn how to play guqin and sing poems by famous poets from different Chinese dynasties such as Farewell to Meng Haoran at Yellow Crane Terrace by Li Bai, but also will learn standard Chinese through these poems. At the end of the course, students will be able to sing at least five famous Chinese poems while playing guqin, and will have a broad appreciation of Chinese culture.
Fees and schedules

Time: Sundays 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm, 19/1/24, 26/1/24, 2/2/24, 9/2/24
Fee: $150 (one session) or $480 (4 sessions)

Instruments can be rented for the full 4 days duration of the course which they can take home to practice with (normal cost $50). NAGA class sponsor will provide discounts for students who want to buy guqins in the class, with prices starting from only $199 (see the description of each model recommended).

Before Ed Sheeran became the Grammy-winning and 150 million album-selling Ed Sheeran, he was just another struggling artist. He was playing in small clubs, knocking on doors and being told no over and over again—following a seemingly impossible dream.
But Sheeran decided to take a risk on himself, buying a one-way ticket to Los Angeles in 2010 after booking one gig (特约演奏). Looking for other gigs led to playing on Jamie Foxx’s radio show and to using the recording studio in Foxx’s home for free. And sleeping on Foxx’s couch (长沙发).
“Within a month,” Sheeran said, “of going there, with zero confidence, and ending up in one of the biggest movie stars in the world’s house, recording...in my mind, I was like, ‘I must have something.’ So, going back to England, I had this charged-up battery...and started making records, doing tours all over...”
Staying the course in the face of struggle and rejection (拒绝) is hard.
That’s where Foxx stepped in for Sheeran. “‘You’re great,’” Foxx recalled telling Sheeran. “I said, ‘I know you don’t have anywhere to go, so you can take a rest here.’”
Most people give up in the face of adversity (逆境)—even if they are smarter, better connected, more talented or better funded than you. Success often comes down to perseverance (坚持). You can’t win if you aren’t around at the end.
You don’t have to offer your couch. But you can be kind. You can offer a word of encouragement to a struggling friend. You can offer a little help to a struggling connection. Behind every startup is a person with a dream: a person living on couches and depending on strangers being kind. Once in a while be one of those strangers. Because a little help may be all a person needs to keep going.

My story starts like so many writers’: making stories as soon as I could hold a pencil. By seven, I was making up “novels” weekly and forcing them upon my long-suffering aunts. While other kids dreamed of being astronauts, I hesitated between “author” and “veterinarian”.
Then, at fifteen, I saw the first Lord of the Rings film in the cinema. It struck me like lightning. When I discovered it was adapted from a book and that entire worlds could be built with words, my path was set — to be a writer in the future. I immediately dug out my glitter gel pens and got back to writing.
But growing up meant growing doubtful. “Be practical,” everyone said. So I became the cliche: the writer who studied psychology (心理学) instead. Academic work in university took over every minute of my life, leaving my stories untouched and coated in dust.
After graduation, the floodgates opened. Characters flooded back, whispering I forgot how much I needed that. Over a period of time, I wrote crazily until my new job got even busier and my personal life broke down. Then I found myself pulling boxes of half-finished works into my childhood bedroom at twenty-six. This time, the fall was severe. That slump went on for years.
Then came the babies. When I held my first child in my arms, tired for lack of sleep and aching all over, I got up the courage to ask myself. “Why haven’t I become a writer yet ” How absurd (荒唐的) that was! Here I was, busy changing diapers (尿布), yet the old hunger rushed back louder than the baby. So I fought for it — writing down outlines with a purple pen while feeding babies, reading books during naptimes, stealing twenty bleary-eyed minutes at midnight. I kept going.
Now, I’m more tired than ever. More frightened too. But the words are here to stay. It turns out that my greatest mistake wasn’t in stopping writing, but in believing I could ever stop writing.

What if everything happens for a reason Burnt toast theory, a modern view on this classic idea, suggests that every little inconvenience we experience in our day-to-day lives happens for a bigger reason.
Imagine you accidentally burn your toast before leaving for work. According to burnt toast theory, this tiny inconvenience can cause a domino effect (多米诺效应). Your morning gets delayed by three to five minutes — just enough time to leave the house later than usual and avoid a potential car accident. Or perhaps you catch a later train, missing an awkward encounter with someone you don’t intend to see. You might even meet someone new whom you wouldn’t have otherwise met, leading to a friendship or romantic connection.
When we feel like things are outside our control, that can be scary. The burnt toast theory can help some people let go of their need for control and take negative situations more positively.
However, while maintaining a positive mindset can be beneficial, over-optimism can lead to “poisonous positivity”. When we only allow ourselves to focus on positive thoughts, we are denying ourselves the chance to properly deal with challenges and difficult situations to better ourselves, focusing on creating a false positive fa ade (假象) instead. By constantly avoiding negative experiences, we might ignore their real impact on us and fail to acknowledge when we’re struggling. It can make us feel worse about ourselves, and may lead to pushing down negative feelings or experiences, and refusing to acknowledge or deal with them fully.
Instead of focusing purely on positive thinking, working towards developing a growth mindset may be more helpful. You don’t always have to look for life’s silver linings, or even the meaning behind a little burnt toast. Sometimes things happen, and they suck. But as long as we take time to acknowledge how these things make us feel, and recognize that we can’t always control everything around us, we can still work towards improving ourselves, and how we handle life’s unexpected challenges — and that’s what really matters.
