Common Sense Media, a group that helps children, parents and teachers better understand media and technology, did a study. It paid attention to all kinds of activities about media, from old ways like reading and listening to the radio, to new favorites like using social media and video chatting. More than 2,600 teens were surveyed. Here are some truths and myths (荒诞的说法)the study found:
Truth 1: Some teens spend too much time looking at screens.
One in five teens use more than six hours of screen media each day and 18% of teens are looking at their screens for more than 10 hours a day. Often they watch television on one while chatting with friends on another.

Myth 2: TV and music have been muscled out (强行逐出).
For teens, TV is still the top media activity. They enjoy it the most and watch it every day. In fact, 47% of teens have TV sets in their bedrooms. For teens, music is the main form of amusement. However, only about a third listen to music on the radio. Most teens listen on their smartphones.

Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. Finding trapped people quickly is often the difference between life and death in relief missions. New robot tech is coming to the rescue. Imagine you’re trapped in a collapsed building. Unable to move, you’re forced to wait. Finally, something looks through the crack (裂缝), and you find yourself face-to-face with... a robot
We have to deal with our fair share of disasters on our little blue planet. These calamities can range from extreme weather events like hurricanes to other naturally occurring phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are times when people suffer from intentional injuries, even resulting in death. And for most wildfires, they are simply the unfortunate side effect of human activities. Regardless of the cause, for centuries, humans have set out on search-and-rescue missions to save those left in a disaster’s wake.
But in the past few decades, robots have taken an increasingly active role in these rescue efforts. They have battled their way through disasters. These mechanical rescuers can range from ground to sea to aerial (航空的) vehicles — including unmanned aerial vehicles that don’t just search through disaster areas for survivors, but provide exploration from above. Beyond that, scientists across the globe are building new, creative types of rescue robots.
Many projects still in development draw inspiration from the animal kingdom, mimicking (模仿) designs that nature has perfected to make machines that can move through difficult environments, from droids that look like snakes to a group of autonomous bees. And while many are still years away from being used in actual disasters.
8. Why did the writer use the situation of people being trapped in a collapsed building
A. To tell people the real scene of the earthquakes.

D. To introduce a new way of saving during disasters.

C. The personal imagination. D. The harsh environment.

The Qixi Festival, the Chinese Valentine’s Day that fell yesterday, was not only a disappointment for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets.
The cold welcome has caused experts to seriously worry that the lovers’ festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), is dying out. Some have even called for government to make the festival a legal Chinese Lovers’ Day.
But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals are worth high praise.
A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, share the same fate of the Qixi Festival.
Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not reduced. If the younger generation fails to appreciate the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
Concern about the traditional holidays also reminds people of the growing influence of foreign cultures as the country opens wider to the outside world. With traditional festivals becoming less important and imports such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day gaining widespread popularity, the public including cultural professionals have tended to measure traditional Chinese festivals in economic terms.
Business rather than culture has begun to play a dominant (占主导地位的)role. More and more people are interested in how much money can be made during the holidays.
In fact, what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is unique culture that contributes to the world’s diversity (多样性)with globalization.
12. What leads the experts to worry that the lovers’ festival is dying out
A. The disappointment in both businessmen and lovers.
B. The popularity of Qixi Festival among the public.
C. The action to preserve culture and traditional festivals.
D. The failure to make traditional Chinese festivals legal.
13. What’s the author’s attitude to the effectiveness of the legalization of the Qixi Festival
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned. C. Hopeful. D. Doubtful.
14. From Paragraph 5 we can learn that ________.
A. the legal traditional festivals ensure the meaningfulness of the celebrations
B. making the festivals legal can reduce the risk of their disappearance
C. preserving traditional festivals relies on youth’s valuing their cultural values
D. the formalized celebrations are thought more highly of by the young people
15. The writer’s purpose of writing the text is to ________.
A. review the effects of globalization on the world’s cultural diversity
B. inform the public of traditional Chinese festivals’ dying out
C. highlight the role of cultural elements in preserving traditional festivals
D. warn people against measuring traditional festivals in economic terms

“My name is Julie Hanson. I am excited to be back in school. I have two new cats, and you are all invited to see them after school!” Julie said to the 2nd grade class when it was her turn to introduce herself. Julie knew she was outgoing (外向的) and sometimes loud. With her bright red, curly (卷曲) hair and mismatched socks, Julie appeared a little frightening to the shy kids. She couldn’t help it! She loved school, her friends, and being the centre of attention. Julie’s mum said she attracted friends like fruit flies to apple juice.
Mrs. Diaz, the teacher, smiled and thanked Julie for sharing. Mrs. Diaz then introduced a new kid named Andy Collins. When he spoke, he was quiet and didn’t say much. Julie thought she had seen him at breakfast. He had been sitting alone and not eating. Mrs. Diaz then partnered him with Eric as his “buddy” for the day. After class, Julie had forgotten all about Andy. She played four square, swung across the monkey bars twice, and shot a hoop (铁环) that didn’t make the basket. “I love being back at school,” later thought Julie as she took her seat and got ready to work on maths.
At lunchtime, Julie noticed that Andy was sitting with Eric and his friends but not talking to anyone. “He looks lonely, ” thought Julie, as she ate up her pizza, drank her milk, and went outside to play hide-and-seek with a group that was already playing.
When the bell rang to go home for the day, Julie walked up to Mrs. Diaz and gave her a big hug. “Thank you for a great first day! ” Julie said.
“I’ll see you tomorrow! ” Mrs. Diaz told her. She smiled to herself about her outgoing student.
