Sunflowers
Arles, January 1889, Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)oil on canvas, 95 cm x 73 cm
Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings are among his most famous, and this one was completed in Arles in 1889. It shows sunflowers in a vase, mostly in three shades of yellow. The colours of the flowers range from bright yellows to brownish yellows, showing that the flowers are at different stages of life.
The sunflower paintings held special meaning for Van Gogh. When his friend Paul Gauguin, who was also a famous painter, came to live with him for a while, he hung the first two in his guest’s room to welcome him.

A Masterpiece of Yellow: Van Gogh's Sunflowers
Sunflowers is a famous oil painting by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. It is one of his most well-known works. He completed this painting in the city of Arles, France, in January 1889.
The painting shows a simple vase filled with sunflowers. The flowers are all at different stages of life. Some are fresh and bright yellow, facing the viewer, while others are older, wilting, and turning brown. Van Gogh used a beautiful range of colors, from brilliant lemon-yellow to earthy, brownish-yellow. His brushstrokes are thick and textured, which makes the flowers seem alive and full of energy.
In my opinion, this painting is wonderful for two reasons. First, the bright yellow colors create a feeling of happiness and warmth. Second, knowing that Van Gogh painted similar sunflowers to welcome his friend Paul Gauguin gives the artwork a deeper meaning of friendship. For me, it is more than just flowers; it is a symbol of joy and welcome.
