Chinese Nobel Prize-winning physicist Zhen Ning Yang, one of the most influential
高一年级英语科试卷 共 10 页 第 3 页
scientists in modern physics, passed away in Beijing on October 18 due to illness at the age of
103.
Born in 1922, Yang was brought up on the Tsinghua campus, where his father was a math
professor. After finishing his undergraduate degree, he obtained his master’s degree from
Tsinghua. He enrolled in the University of Chicago in the United States to pursue a doctorate in
1946 and was strongly influenced by Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, who had won
the same Nobel Prize in 1938. He later became a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study
in Princeton.
Yang won the Nobel Prize in 1957 with Tsung-Dao Lee for their investigation of the
so-called parity laws that led to ''important discoveries regarding the elementary particles,''
according to the Nobel Prize website. They were the first Chinese-born Nobel Prize winners in
physics.
Professor Yang was deeply devoted to his homeland, making remarkable contributions to
China’s scientific and educational developments. His visit to China in 1971 led to a wave of
visits by overseas scholars, earning him recognition as the pioneer in building the bridge of
academic exchange between China and the United States. He later proposed the restoration(恢
复) and strengthening of basic scientific research to China’s central leadership. He also raised
funds to establish the "Committee on Educational Exchange with China", which has
continuously sponsored(资助) nearly 100 Chinese scholars for advanced studies in the United
States. These scholars later became the backbone(骨干) of China's scientific and technological
development. He undertook( 承 担 ) extensive work to promote China's scientific and
technological exchange and progress, offering advice and exercising significant influence on
major Chinese scientific projects and the formulation (制定) of science and education policies.
After returning to Tsinghua University in 1999, he took on developing the Institute for
Advanced Study as his new mission. He poured enormous effort into advancing fundamental
disciplines like physics and cultivating talents at Tsinghua, making remarkable contributions
that greatly impacted the reform and development of Chinese higher education.
Professor Yang’s life stands as a timeless chapter in human history — one that shines not
only for China but for the global community of thinkers and innovators.

Ecologists Dr. Matt Holden, Dr. Andrew Rogers and Dr. Russell Yong observed their share
house and its backyard in 2020, and discovered 1,150 unique species of animals and plants
over a 12-month period.
"We asked a large number of ecologists and conservation scientists how many species
they’d expect to find in this setting and they said it could be only 200," Dr. Holden said. "But
after 60 days of surveying, we’d already discovered 777 species. It shows suburban (郊区的)
houses and apartments could have far more biodiversity (生物多样性 ) than ever imagined,
especially when it comes to insects."
The idea of the species count was born when Dr. Rogers went to clean spider's webs (蜘蛛
网 ) in his room and wondered how many spiders were in the house. "The three of us soon
worked out a plan to check the house and backyard in search of other insects that lived
alongside us," Dr. Holden said.
The survey showed richly biodiverse creatures, including 436 moth and butterfly species,
56 different spiders, and 56 birds. The researchers were also surprised to discover three species
not previously recorded in Australia’s leading biodiversity database. "The house was a rich
ecosystem of species interacting—we discovered unexpectedly a kind of moth, which spends
its whole time feeding inside the waste of other animals before turning into an adult," Dr.
Holden said.
Homes across all suburban areas could play host to similar biodiversity. "It depends on
how people tend to their homes and gardens—keeping low maintenance trees and flowers and
preventing chemicals used for killing insects will lead to the rising number of living creatures,"
Dr. Holden said. "You don’t have to go travelling to connect with Australia's different species
of creatures. Just look in your own backyard."
28. How many species did the three housemates discover in 12 months
A. 200. B. 436. C. 700. D. 1, 150.
29. What made Dr. Rogers get the idea of the species count
A. Cleaning his room. B. Observing the spiders.
C. A talk with his friend. D. Amass of dead insects.
30. Which statement will Dr. Holden probably agree with
A. Australia has seen a jump in living creatures.
B. Suburban backyards are home to diverse species.
C. Wildlife tourism threatens animals and plants.
高一年级英语科试卷 共 10 页 第 5 页
D. People should keep their gardens free of insects.
31. Where is this text most likely from
A. A children’s story. B. Amuseum guide. C. A science magazine. D. A health report.

How can people speak their mind without saying This is a question that scientists have
aimed to answer for a long time. Researchers recently brought an upgraded(升级的) device that
can translate users' brain waves(脑电波) into daily speech.
Previously, the team led by Edward Chang at the University of California, San Francisco,
developed an AI-based system that can identify up to 50 commonly used words based on the
participant’s brain waves. According to their paper published in November, the team upgraded
the system which can now translate thoughts into complete sentences on a computer screen.
Their tests showed that the device could decode ( 破 译 ) silently spoken letters from a
1,152-word vocabulary at a speed of about 29 characters per minute. The accuracy was up to
94 percent.
However, this method can still be unsure since users still need to undergo surgery(手术).
Scientists at the University of Texas, US, have tried to translate people’s thoughts without even
touching their heads, reported Live Science.
The new technique is called fMRI, or functional magnetic resonance imaging (功能性磁
共振成像). It’s a safer way of "reading" brain activity. Active brain cells have more oxygen.
By tracking these cells, scientists can translate brain activity.
The team asked participants to listen to 16 hours of radio shows while scanning their
brains. Then they used a computer algorithm (算法 ) to create a story based on the fMRI
recording. It matched the radio shows pretty well.
Also, the algorithm could basically explain the story of a silent movie that the participants
watched. The team aims to develop this technology so that it can be used in brain-computer
interfaces (脑机接口) designed for people who cannot speak or type.
32. What do we know about the device mentioned in paragraph 2
A. It was implanted into a man's heart.
B. It can help restore patients' lost memory.
C. It can identify about 50 commonly used words.
D. It was developed independently by Edward Chang.
33. How does fMRI "read" people's minds
A. By following their active brain cells.
B. By putting electric poles into their brains.
C. By recording their reaction to radio shows.
D. By matching their brain activity with their habits.
34. What’s the advantage of fMRI compared to the first device mentioned in the story
A. It's safer. B. It's cheaper. C. It's smaller in size. D. It's more accurate.
35. What can be concluded about fMRI from the last two paragraphs
高一年级英语科试卷 共 10 页 第 6 页
A. It can only read what participants hear.
B. It can be used in brain-computer interfaces.
C. It can read every detail of participants' minds.
D. It cannot work out what people imagine in their heads.

Mr. Jackson was a well-respected teacher in a small town. He had always paid much

students, Emily, was not getting on the school bus with all the other children and that her exam
results had dropped a bit, he became worried.
One day, he decided to follow her and was surprised when he saw her walking towards an
old factory building. He parked his car a few blocks away from the factory and waited for
Emily. After a few minutes, he carefully moved towards the building, his heart racing with
each step.
As he entered the dark and dirty inside of the building, his mind was flooded with a sense
of pity. Then he saw Emily sitting on the floor, surrounded (包围 ) by her textbooks and
notebooks.
"Emily, what are you doing here " Mr. Jackson asked, surprised.
Emily looked up and was surprised to see her teacher. She said, "Oh, Mr. Jackson! I came
here to do my homework. It s quiet here, and I feel safe."
"Why don t you go home " he asked, his concern (担忧) growing.
"I live with my mother. Recently, my mother lost her job and we haven t found a house
yet," she replied. "And my father used to work here, so it s a familiar place to me."
Mr. Jackson was heartbroken to hear this. He knew he had to do something to help Emily.
He sat down beside Emily and asked her to tell him everything that was going on.
Emily shared stories about her father, who had passed away a few years before. She talked
about how her mother had struggled to make ends meet.
Mr. Jackson listened carefully. The more he knew about Emily, the more he realised that
being a teacher was not only about teaching subjects, but it was also about shaping young
minds and making a difference to their lives. He decided to take action.
Paragraph 1: The next day, Mr. Jackson went to see Emily s mother.

参考作文
Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm writing to give some suggestions to protect the wildlife living in and around our city. As we
know, many species of wildlife are in danger of extinction. This is because the environment that
they are living in has been destroyed greatly.
With the development of cities, water and air are seriously polluted. Their living areas are
becoming smaller and smaller. They not only have little to eat, but also can be killed by human
beings. These species of wildlife are important part of our life. Personally, more measures should be
taken to protect them from being hurt. Firstly, more laws must be made to stop people from cutting
down trees. Secondly, all the factories must clean the waste water before it is poured into rivers or
lakes. Thirdly, more reserves should be set up so that they can live safely.
I hope my suggestions are helpful.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写:
The next day, Mr. Jackson went to see Emily s mother. Mr. Jackson promised to help them in any
way he could. He said to her, "If you don t mind, Emily can stay with me at my house until you find
a house." Emily s mother agreed. Mr. Jackson took Emily to shop for new clothes first and then
took her home. He helped Emily catch up on her studies every day. Soon, Emily s grades improved,
and she started to come out of her shell, making new friends at school. Meanwhile, Emily s mother
managed to find a job and a house.
One day, Emily s mother came to Mr. Jackson s house to pick Emily up. She thanked Mr. Jackson
for everything he had done for them with tears in her eyes. Mr. Jackson smiled and said, "You don t
have to thank me. It s my pleasure to help you and Emily." Emily hugged her teacher and said,
"Thank you, Mr. Jackson. You re the best!" Mr. Jackson hugged her back, feeling the warmth and a
sense of satisfaction in his heart. He had made a difference to Emily s life, and that was all that
mattered to him.

【1】M: Cindy, let me get the check this time. After all, it was my idea to eat here at the restaurant.
W: Thank you, Simon, but let’s pay our own bill as usual.
【2】W: How did you like the concert last night I remember you weren’t sure about going.
M: At first I had my doubts, but once the band started playing, I knew it was worth it.
【3】W: Jeff, that man is my head teacher, what shall I do
M: Why are you so nervous We’re not at school. Just focus on the movie. Shh.
W: I don’t want him to notice me.
【4】M: Are you prepared for your interview next week I heard it can be pretty tough.
W: Yes. I’ve been practicing my answers and learning about the company, so I feel more confident
now.
【5】W: Mike, do you see these two buttons Just press the one on the right to turn the printer on or
off and press the larger one for more copies.
M: Got it, Jessie, but who needs the file so urgently
W: Leo, our new manager.
【 6】W: Robert, I just remembered our new customer, John, is arriving at the airport at noon
tomorrow. Could you pick him up and take him to lunch
M: But Jane, I already have a lunch appointment with our department manager, Peter.
W: The thing is I’ll be in a meeting until 3 and really can’t be back any earlier. Could you
reschedule with Peter and look after John until I return
M: Sure, don’t worry. I’ll call Peter first and take good care of John.
【7】W: Hi David, it’s been a long time. Are you still working full time
M: Actually I’m retired, but I study Italian at the evening school every Tuesday and Friday. I love
learning new things which helps keep my brain healthy. Exercise is important too, so I work as a
dog walker for some of my neighbors. It’s perfect since I have free time during the day while
they’re at work, how about you
W: I usually go jogging in the morning and play chess with my friends in the afternoon. I also
believe it matters a lot to keep both the body and brain active.
【8】M: Hi, I can’t find the latest biology textbook. The system shows it’s available here.
W: Let me check the records. Oh, I see the book was damaged by a careless student. A new copy
will arrive this Friday.
M: That’s too bad. I need it for my lab report right now. I’ll wait then. By the way, I left a black
folder with my experiment data here yesterday. Has anybody seen it
W: Yes. One was handed in this morning. It’s in the Lost and Found box at the entrance. You just
need to show your student ID card to claim it.
M: Oh no, I don’t have my card with me. I’ll get it later. Also a chair by the window of the reading
area is shaky and makes a loud noise.
W: Don’t worry, someone is repairing it. It’s 3:15 now and the work should be finished in about 15
minutes. Please come back then.
M: Got it.
【 9 】 M: Welcome to Daily Talk! Today we’re joined by Kate Smith, an archaeologist from
Germany. Kate, what did you discover in your latest research
W: We uncovered several antiques. The most valuable find was a small bronze container decorated
with cloud patterns. It was probably used to hold water. We also discovered a shell necklace, which
we believe belonged to children, as well as some stone tools like a knife for cutting plants.
M: Those sound fascinating, but I imagine the work wasn’t easy. What challenges did your team
face
W: The wind was our biggest challenge. For two weeks, strong winds blew heavily. Also the bronze
container was buried very deep and it took us three days to remove it safely.
M: Painstaking process but satisfying result, right Will these items be on display in a museum
W: Maybe, but not right away, because we’ll give the items a good clean first. Then we’ll recheck
their age and take detailed records in the lab. So far, we haven’t found a safe way to display them
yet. More visitors could also mean a higher risk of damage, but we will consider it once everything
is ready.
【 10】W: Hello everyone, I’m Lina from the Youth Scientist Summer Camp. We are a youth
development organization that introduces young people like you to the world of science. We
carefully select our participants. Instead of looking at academic grades, we focus more on students’
passion for science.
To join the camp, all you need to do is submit a short essay about your favorite project, together
with a teacher’s recommendation letter. During the camp, you will work with college professors on
small research projects, make friends with students from other schools, and even receive a
certificate that will be helpful for your college applications. All of our leaders are former
participants themselves, which means they truly understand what you need. They are patient,
enthusiastic, and always ready to support you whenever you face difficulties.
So what do past participants think about the camp Well over 90% of them said it was the best
summer experience they had. One student even told me that the camp helped her confirm her dream
of studying engineering. If you’ve got the passion to become a young scientist, come and discover
what we have to offer.
