The dolphin is one of the smartest animals in the ocean. It is a kind of mammal (哺乳动物), not a fish, because it needs to come up to the surface (水面)to breathe air. Dolphins can live in both warm seas and rivers. They usually swim in groups called pods. A pod may have only a few dolphins, or sometimes hundreds of them.
Dolphins use sounds to talk to each other. They make clicks and whistles (口哨) to share information. They also use a special way called echolocation to find food. By sending out sounds and listening for the echoes, dolphins can “see” things in dark or muddy (泥泞的) water.
These animals are fast swimmers. They can jump high out of the water, which often makes people smile. Some dolphins even help fishermen by driving fish into their nets. In some places, they are trained to help save people in the sea.
Sadly, dolphins face dangers from pollution, fishing nets, and boat traffic. We should work together to help them, so that these clever animals can live safely in the ocean for many years.

On January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice math. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U. S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U. S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
36.DeepSeek-R1 can do all the following EXCEPT (除了) ________.
A. solving math problems B. writing computer code
C. replacing human scientists D. answering questions
37.What makes DeepSeek-R1 different from other AIs in learning methods
A. It needs more prepared examples.
B. It improves by itself through practice.
C. It can only solve math problems.
D. It requires expensive computers.
38.Why are U. S. tech companies like Meta worried about DeepSeek-R1
A. Because it is too expensive.
B. Because it works worse than their AIs.
C. Because only Chinese people can use it.
D. Because it is cheap and free, changing the AI competition.
39.According to the passage, what is the main purpose of DeepSeek-R1 as stated by its engineers
A. To earn a lot of money from AI services.
B. To become the most powerful AI in the world.
C. To make AI accessible to everyone, not just the rich.
D. To compete directly with U.S. companies like Meta.
40.What is the best title for this passage
A. “The High Cost of AI Development”
B. “DeepSeek-R1: A Smart and Free AI”
C. “Why U. S. Tech Companies Are Worried”
D. “How to Build an AI Like GPT-4”

41.Because of his excellent performance, Hao Yongquan, 58, was chosen as Gansu’s most beautiful forest ranger (护林员) in December, 2023.
Hao has been a forest ranger for 37 years since he stopped serving in the army in 1987. He and his workmates at Guanyin Forest Farm are called the “forests eyes” and “green guardians”.
“Daily work usually starts with patrolling (巡逻). Every morning, we carry necessary equipment after having breakfast and then set off to forests with dry food and water bottles, patrolling until it gets dark,” Hao said.
Rangers have been living in the mountains and forests for years, getting used to difficulties and loneliness. They always go out early and return at sunset during the whole year, and their duty is to protect green mountains and clear waters.
A forest ranger often has to walk more than 12 kilometers a day, and a pair of shoes wears out in two to three months, according to Hao.
Hao Yongquan works at Liuping Forest Management Office. It manages 10,511.6 hectares (公顷).
“Because of poor road conditions, if rangers go to the farthest villages for patrols, they have to walk 30 to 40 kilometers on mountain roads, climb four mountains, and cross more than 10 rivers,” Hao said. “And each patrol takes three to four days.”
When Hao returns from his patrol every day, he writes down the results in the patrol diary, recording his love for mountains and forests.
“The environment is improving day by day, and that makes me feel my work is worth it,” he said.

Please stop taking our living areas and protect the forest. Also, make strict rules to stop hunting wild animals. We just want to live peacefully with you.
Yours sincerely,
Leo
